Eligibility
» SIU Students
– On-Campus
• Undergraduate and graduate students must be currently enrolled for at least one
credit hour to be eligible for participation.
– Off-Campus/Online
• Undergraduate and graduate students must purchase an “inactive student”
membership to participate in intramural sports.
» SIU Faculty/Staff
– SIUC faculty and staff who have purchased a semester or annual RSS membership may
participate in intramural sports.
» Non-SIU Affiliated Individuals
– RSS members must purchase a semester or annual membership to participate in
intramural sports.
– RSS members under eighteen years of age cannot participate in SIU intramural sports.
– Guests of RSS members or SIU students may not participate in intramural sports.
4. Recreational Sports and Services
Eligibility
» Professional and Semi-Professional Athletes
– Any individual that has received payment for trying out professionally or semi-
professionally or for participating professionally or semi-professionally is ineligible for
registering for his or her sport or related sport for a period of three calendar years (1,095
days) after the end of his or her career.
– Professional and semi-professional athletes may participate in all non-related sports
without a waiting period.
» Varsity Athletes
– Any individual that appears on the roster for a collegiate (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, NCCAA,
USCAA) varsity team is ineligible for participation in his or her sport or related sports for
one calendar year (365 days) from the end of their affiliation with the collegiate team.
– Current and former varsity athletes may participate in non-related sports without a waiting
period.
» Sport Club Athletes
– A sport club athlete is defined as any student that appears or appeared on the roster for a
RSS recognized sport club during the current calendar year.
– For the following sports, no more than two (2) current sport club members may appear on
the roster:
• Softball, Basketball, Soccer, and Volleyball

Captain Roles
» Serve as the primary point of contact between
the team and Competitive Sports staff
» Completing the registration process for the team
» Provide accurate team availability Completing
all preseason requirements (e.g. Captain’s
Meeting, Captain’s Quiz, etc.)
» Checking the eligibility of all team members
» Reviewing the relevant sport rules

Captain Roles
» Ensuring that team members understand and
comply with Competitive Sports policies and
procedures
» Notifying his/her team member of the date,
time, and place of each scheduled contest
» Bear responsibility for the behavior of the
team and anyone affiliated with the team
» Check the accuracy of the contest results on
the SIUC IMLEAGUES web site

» Clothing & Equipment
– Athletic apparel
– Freedom of movement
– Hats
• No billed hats or any headwear with knots
• Headbands and knit or stocking caps are
legal.
– Non-sport equipment such as watches, rings etc.
should be removed prior to each match.

Policies and Procedures
» Pets
– Pets are not allowed in the Student
Recreation Center (SRC).
• Exception: Service animals (e.g. dogs
and miniature horses)
– Owners are responsible for behavior and
actions of their pets.
» Rules
– SIUC Intramural dodgeball rules are based
on the rules publication of the National
Amateur Dodgeball Association.
– When appropriate, rules are modified
and/or created to level the playing field and
foster a safe and enjoyable experience for
all participants.

Forfeits
» Four types
– Failing to field a team without
contacting the SIU Competitive Sports
Office
– Player Ineligibility
– Poor Sportspersonship
– Receiving two defaults during pool play

Forfeits
» Forfeit Fee Information
– Team captains will provide their PayPal
or credit card information during the
registration process.
• The Competitive Sports will not
have access to your payment
information.
– When a team forfeits a contest, the
team captain has two business days to
contact the Coordinator of Competitive
Sports to schedule an appeal meeting.
– If an appeal has not been submitted
after two business days, the forfeit fee
of forty dollars ($20.00) will be
assessed using the payment
information provided.

Grace Periods
» Initial Grace Period
– If a team has one player present at
game time, they receive a grace
period of five minutes.
» Optional Grace Period
– Once the initial grace period ends,
the opposing team captain has two
options:
• Wait an additional five minutes
for the opposing team to show up
• Accept a win by forfeit
– Once a decision has been made, the
captain cannot change his or her
mind.

Protests
» Rule Misinterpretation or Misapplication
– During a game, participants may protest the misinterpretation or
misapplication of a rule.
– After the conclusion of the play and before the start of the next
sequence (e.g. serve), the team captain should call a conference with
the opposing captain to resolve the issue.
– If an agreement cannot be reached, the Competitive Sports supervisor
shall resolve the matter.
» If either team continues to disagree, the supervisor shall complete the
intramural sports protest form, and the game shall continue under protest.
» The Coordinator of Competitive Sports shall settle the dispute.

Protests
» Player Eligibility
– The team captain should file a
formal protest with the
Competitive Sports supervisor.
– The supervisor shall meet
immediately with both captains to
discuss the eligibility of the
player.
– The supervisor may make an
immediate ruling or ask teams to
complete the game under protest.

Sportspersonship Rating System
» The sportspersonship rating system serves to assess a team’s
attitude and behavior throughout the regular season and
postseason.
» Actions and behaviors before, during, and after the contest are
included in a team’s sportspersonship score.
» The team captain is responsible for educating his/her team
and spectators about the sportspersonship system.

Rating Criteria
5 - Excellent Players fully cooperate with Intramural Sports staff and opposing team members.
Spectators support their team in a positive manner.
Team captain respectively addresses officials.
The team is an exemplary model for other teams.
4 - Good Winning Team of a Forfeited Game.
Team members verbally complain about some calls or show some dissent.
Their actions may warrant a conduct penalty (i.e. yellow card, technical foul, or unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty), but they do not receive a penalty.
3 - Average Both Teams for a Defaulted Game.
Team constantly complains to IM staff or the opposing team. The team captain exhibits no control over
his/her team, spectators, and himself/herself.
Their actions result in a conduct penalty (i.e. yellow card, technical foul, or unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty.)
Teams that receive a conduct penalty cannot receive higher than a “3” rating.
The team that has one ejection or two conduct penalties will not receive higher than a “3” rating.
2 – Below Average Team constantly complains to IM and the opposing team.
The team captain exercises no control over anyone.
Teams that receive one ejection and one conduct warning or three conduct warnings shall forfeit the
contest and receive a rating of “2.”

Playing Area – Neutral Zone
» During the opening rush, any ball retrieved from the neutral
zone must be returned behind the attack line before it may be
thrown at opponent

The Game
» Players
– A maximum of 6 players on the court at
the beginning of the match
– 5 players are required to start the game.
» Timeouts
– There are no team timeouts.
– The court official may declare a timeout
for an injury or other reasons.
» Match Format

Opening Rush
» Six dodgeballs will be placed on the
centerline.
» Players will start behinds their team’s
endline.
» The Court Official will verbally count down
and blow his whistle to start the contest.
» The players may dash to the line and
retrieve a ball. The retrieved ball must
cross of the plane of the attack line before
a player can attempt to hit an opponent.
» Players may not dive or slide when
attempting to retrieve a ball.

Live Ball
» Live Ball
– A live ball is a ball that has been
thrown and has not touched anything,
including the floor, walls, the Court
Official, or an item outside of the
playing court.
– A deflected ball is still considered live
until it is declared dead by rule.

» Dead Ball
– A throw ball is dead when it has
contacted the floor, the walls, the
Court Officials, or any item outside of
the playing court.
– Balls thrown after a timeout are
considered dead.

Timing
» Each match has a time limit of
fifteen minutes (15:00).
» Each game shall have a time
limit of five minutes (5:00).
» The intermission between each
game shall be one minute (1:00)
in length

Determining the Winner
» Determining the Winner
– If neither team has been
completely eliminated at the
end of the five (5:00) minute
time limit, the team with the
higher number of remaining
players will be declared the
winner.
– Extra Period
• In the case of an equal
number of players
remaining after the first
two games, a one-minute
(1:00) sudden-death period
will be played. The first
team to lose a player loses
the game.

» In the case of an equal number of players remaining after the third game, a one-on-one
sudden death duel will be played.
» A team shall pick a player for each duel.
» The player must remain within the duel zone on his or her half of the court.
– A player’s duel zone is the area of the court bounded by the attack line, neutral
zone, and sidelines.
» The first player to strike his or her opponent with a legal shot shall be declared the
winner.

Out of Bounds
» Thrown balls that enter
out of play areas (e.g.
team benches and
spectator area) shall be
declared dead
immediately and given
to the nearest team.
27. Recreational Sports and Services
Getting Out
» A Player is OUT when
– He or she is struck by a live thrown ball that
contacts him or her below the shoulders.
– A live ball thrown by that player is caught by
an opponent before becoming dead.
– The thrower is OUT, and everyone hit by the
thrown ball remains in the game.
– A teammate may reenter the game per
catch.
– He or she steps over the midcourt line.
– He or she is struck by a ball that was
deflected by another ball that was either in
the air or being held by a teammate or
opponent.
– He or she attempts to deflect a thrown ball
with a held ball and drops the ball.

Exceptions to Getting Out
» A player that is stuck by a
teammate’s throw is not
OUT. However, if an
opponent legally catches the
thrown ball, the throwing
player is OUT.
» A player cannot intentionally
catch the thrown ball of a
teammate. Play shall
continue.

Headshots: Illegal vs. Legal
» Illegal headshot
– A thrown ball hits a standing
player in the head or neck.
The thrower shall be OUT.
» Legal headshot
– A thrown ball hits a player in
the head who is prone,
bending, or ducking.
– A player may not move his or
her head into the path of the
thrown ball.
– The struck player is OUT, and
the thrower remains in the
game.
31. Recreational Sports and Services
Stalling/Delay of Game
» When one team controls all six balls, that team has five
seconds to throw a ball toward the opponent’s court. If the
team fails to throw a ball within five seconds, the court
official shall call a timeout, and the team must roll all balls to
the opponent.
» When both teams are stalling or delaying the game, the court
official will declare a reset.
» Reset
– When the court official declares a reset, all balls shall be
return to the centerline. All remaining players shall touch
the back wall, and the court officials shall signal a rush

Yellow Card
» Three yellow cards issued to a single
team will result in forfeiture of the
contest.
» A single participant can only earn two
yellow cards towards the team’s
totals.
» A yellow card shall be issued for
behavior including but not limited to
the following:
– Entering or leaving the court
without permission from the
Court Official
– Foul or abusive language directed
at another player or Competitive
Sports staff
– Failing to follow the requests
34. Recreational Sports and Services
Red Card
» A player receiving a red card shall be ejected
and must exit the gym immediately.
» Ejected players cannot return to play until
he/she has been cleared for participation by a
professional Intramural staff member.
» A red card shall be issued for behavior
including but not limited to the following:
– Two yellow cards
– Foul or abusive language directed at
another player, an official, or IM staff
– Attempting to kick or strike an opponent,
official, or IM staff
– Threatening another opponent, team,
official, or IM Staff
