Denotations and Connotations are two very important aspects of
media studies. Denotation is the literal or obvious meaning of a
picture or object, e.g. the Denotation of the colour red would simply
be the colour red. Connotation, on the other hand, is what is
perceived from an object or image, e.g. the colour red is often
associated with danger, alarm or passion. Denotations and
connotations are important in media studies because they help
identify a certain genre, e.g. a sports car magazine will have pictures
of sports cars on the front cover, the connotations from this are
speed power, adrenaline and elegance.
