TARGET AUDIENCE OF THRILLER
FILMS
Ryan Quinn
• As our film is a Thriller (specific type of film genre), we
intend for the target audience to be a large age range,
between 15-50 years old as it can relate to a range of ages
due to the content e.g. violence, relationships. Because of
this, the film will be of a more serious nature, rather than
being light-hearted. As our film is targeting a more older
age range, we will have to take onto consideration the
style of acting, the camera angles and props we use to
make the film look as professional and appealing as
possible.
Age
• Many thriller movies have enticed both genders, for the
action, or the suspense, or wanting to know what will
happen next. However, stereotypically, the thriller genre
itself is more aimed at a male audience due to the action
involved. If there is a relationship in the movie however,
women would stereotypically be enticed to watch.
Because of this, we will try to make our movie so it to
appeal to both genders.
Gender
• Films that are mainly viewed for the action/conflict
content e.g. Die Hard are aimed at men of a working to
middle-class range. This means that people with
occupations that relate to construction or plumbing are
one of the main sources of audience this particular genre
of film. This may be because men are stereotypically
shown to be drawn of attracted to films of a violent
nature, which could be noted as a code and convention.
Because of this, in order to gain a more stereotypically
male orientated audience, we would have to include as
much violence as possible.
Class
• The action-thriller based genre could have a specific
target audience depending on the cast (actors/actresses in
the film). People of different races may appeal to the film,
if the cast includes people of different races.
Race/Ethnicity
Typical codes and conventions (things you would usually
expect from a certain genre).
• Action
• Suspense
• Iconography
• Costumes
• Tension in certain scenes
Codes and conventions
• In general we will apply our film, so it applies to both
genders as well as aiming at a variety of classes and
races. In order to do this, we will have to take into
consideration the content of the film ( action, suspense),
as well as the codes and conventions of our film.
