SAFETY:
It is a condition which gives you freedom from
hazard, risk, accident, unsafe act
which may cause injury, damage And loss to
material or property damage and even death.
Safety is not a intellectual exercise to keep us in
work , it is sum of our contribution
to safety management
Summary 1 : DON’T LEARN SAFETY BY ACCIDENTS
5. 5
How to achieve Safety ?
Broadly it is grouped in to 5 Es methods;
1)Engineering - Process Control
2)Enforcement -Rules & Procedures
3)Education - Training
4)Enthusiasm -Behavioral Aspect
5)Evaluation - Audit, Mock Drills
RESULT’S: 95% OF ACCIDENTS BEEN
AVOIDED AT INTIAL STAGE

FIRE CHEMISTRY :
HEAT: Heat energy sufficient to cause ignition
.(flash point)??
OXIDIZING AGENT: air containing oxygen (%)??
FUEL: Any substance that can combust(
depends on)
8. 8
FIRE EXTINGUISHER:
WHY??..WHEN??..HOW??
Fire extinguishers are designed to do just
that.
Starvation - Removal of fuel
Smothering - Removal of oxygen
Cooling - Removal of heat
Remove any one of the three
components and fire cannot start or be

Combustible materials
(wood, paper, fabric, any
solid trash)
Flammable liquids
Petrochemicals, Paints
Flammable gases
Flammable metals:
Lithium and Potassium,
magnesium, Calcium, Zinc,
Titanium and Zirconium
Electrical fire
Cooking oils and fats
(Kitchen fire)

FIRE EXTINGUISHER
LABELING:
Labeling on the fire extinguisher identifies
which class of fire it is appropriate for;
Class A,B,C,D or K and instructions on how
to use it.
EXAMPLES:?? AND THEIR EFFECTS
12. 12
TYPES OF FIRE
EXTINGUISHER:
Dry Chemical
Dry Chemical is the most widely used type
of fire extinguisher and is also recognized
as a multi-purpose ABC fire extinguisher.
MIXTURE OF: ??
13. 13
Carbon Dioxide
Works by separating oxygen and heat.
Usually ineffective against class A fires.
Foam Type
Works by cooling the fire and coating the
fuel. Foam extinguishers create a foam
barrier preventing the fuel from coming in
contact with oxygen.
14. 14
DRY POWDER:
Works by separating fuel from oxygen
and/or removing heat
Effectiveness is based on the type of class
D fire it is designed to extinguish.
effective on class A,B,C,D fires etc...
WET CHEMICAL:
Works by forming a soapy foam blanket
over the burning material and cooling it
below it’s ignition temperature.
APPLICATION: COOKING FIRE’S/ OILS AND

Fire Extinguisher
Locations
Fire extinguishers are located throughout
the workplace and readily accessible in the
event of a fire.
Employees should take the time to learn
the locations of the fire extinguishers in
their workplace.
DO NOT OBSTRUCT:
16. 16
What to do incase of fire emergency:
Actions to take when a fire is discovered….
The Three A's (Activate, Assist, Attempt).
17. 17
Important rules and periodic
trainings:
Obstructed Access & IMPORTANT!!- CHECK REFILLING STATUS
AND SERVICE STATUS
Not Labeled
Not Mounted TRAINING AWARENESS:
• Types of fire extinguishers
• How to use an extinguisher
• Location of fire extinguishers
• Extinguisher limitations
HANDS ON TRAINING AND MOCK DRILLS IS REQUIRED!

Here are some dangerous thoughts
Do you ever think this way?
• I have been doing this job for years and have not
faced an accident yet. (OVER CONFIDENCE)
• There is no need for safety glasses because I am
only going to be grinding for a few seconds.
(MIS CALCULATION)
• I’ll clean it up later. (LAZINESS)
• I’ll stack this in front of the exit and pick it up later.
• Anyone who is able to drive a car can manage to
drive any vehicle! (FORK LITS)
• Why bother about it. (NEGLEGANCE)
19. 19
Don’t try to
change the
people….
Change the
environment
i.e. method of working,
training, instructions,
supervision, inspection
& Safety culture
to
have ZERO tolerance for
Accident
