This document provides instructions for adding closed captioning to YouTube videos in several steps. It instructs users to go to their YouTube channel page and select a video to edit. From there, they can choose the "Subtitles and CC" option to select a language for subtitles and either use auto-generated subtitles or type their own. The instructions explain how to edit any auto-generated or custom subtitles and publish the changes.
1. HOW TO ADD CLOSED CAPTIONING TO
YOUTUBE VIDEOS
B Y : A L E X A N D E R S O U T H E R N
2. First, go to YouTube.com and go to the “My
Channel” section, located under the triple-bars next
to the YouTube logo in the top left corner of your
screen.
3. Next, once you are on your channel page, select the “Video Manager” tab
located directly under the search bar.
4. After that, select the video you wish to edit. Under the
video title there will be a tab titled “Edit” with a drop-down
list next to it. Select the drop-down arrow and choose the
“Subtitles and CC” section in the list.
5. Once you select the “Subtitles and CC” option, you will
be prompted to select a langue for your subtitles. The
default option is English but you have the option to select
from 169 other languages. After you select your desired
language, click the “Set language” button to move on.
6. Once you select the langue you want, you
will be given the option “ English
(Automatic).” This gives you auto-generated
subtitles for your video. On average these
are not very accurate, so I would highly
recommend typing your own subtitles
instead. To do so, click on the “ English
(Automatic)” subtitles button.
7. After you select the “ English (Automatic)”
button, you will be given a list of all the subtitles
in your video. To begin editing the video select
the “Edit” button at the bottom of the subtitles.
8. To edit the subtitles already in the video, select the
section that has the dialogue that needs to be
altered. After you select the text, you can type the
correct subtitles in via a script provided for the video
or by simply listening to the audio in the video.
9. Once you have made the desired alterations to
your video, go to the bottom of the page and
select the “Publish edits” button to save the
changes that you have made to the video.
10. Next, I would recommend removing the “English
(Automatic)” option from your subtitles list. To do so,
select the “ English (Automatic)” button in the
“Subtitles and CC” page. After that, select the
“Actions” drop-down list at the top of the subtitles
pane. Chose the first option, “Unpublish”, from the list.
This will remove the option of auto-generated
subtitles from showing up in your video.
11. And there you have it, adding your own
subtitles to your YouTube videos is as
simple as that. If you have any more
questions about YouTube feel free to

course or come by and ask us directly.
Happy Captioning!
