1. KIERAN PELLING
Project Engineer
Kieran’s engineering background and practical approach provide the technical
foundations required to manage design from concept through to implementation on
site in a smooth and targeted manner. His experience has provided him with an
appreciation for the different roles within a Design and Construct management team,
a set of skills that place him in a pivotal role between the design and contracts team
and a construction site.
Project Responsibilities
As Project Engineer, Kieran is responsible for design and engineering coordination
to construct the project to client requirements while meeting quality, time and cost
objectives. His responsibilities also include buildability analysis, preparing method
statements and client liaison.
Career Overview
In 2008, Kieran was employed by Brookfield Multiplex on a 3 month work experience
rotation as an introduction to the construction industry. Assigned to the Sydney
Water Corporate Headquarters, he was exposed to the different facets of a Design
and Construct project, completing such tasks as safety, quality and environmental management, site supervision of
the basement car park fit out works and defects completion.
After returning to his university studies for two semesters to complete his thesis, Kieran recommenced work with
Brookfield Multiplex working on the Sydney Water Field Operations Facility, Potts Hill. Here Kieran assisted in
design quality management and coordination and defects rectification.
Following this, Kieran worked on the 5 Star The Darling hotel, part of The Star casino upgrade works, and for two
years he covered a variety of different roles on the project. He gained first hand site experience in managing
subcontractors and material handling for the detailed excavation and structure, including the installation and
running of different structure systems. He then managed the onsite installation of the facade which included a
typical curtain wall and a 12 storey raked edge shop front glazing nose. Kieran’s final role on The Star included the
design coordination, procurement, authority approvals and site management of The Darling day spa ($8m); all in all
giving him a well-rounded appreciation of a project from start to finish.
Following The Star project, Kieran was assigned as a Site Engineer on the Charles Perkins Centre, a project for
the University of Sydney in Camperdown. Kieran was involved from the tender stage, including providing
information for DA requirements; site set up of an office for 40 people and 500 workers; managed the approval and
erection of two tower cranes; planning of the structure build; hoists, lifting penetrations, concrete placing booms,
three jump form systems and loading platforms; the scope and letting of the scaffold package; design management
of structure and structural steel; and the erection of a 35T structural steel café; as well as managing the design
coordination, subcontractor scopes and planning for a 1,000m2 cafe and 14,000m2 of landscaping works.
After the completion of The Charles Perkins Centre, Kieran assisted in the delivery of Macquarie Group’s newly
refurbished headquarters at 50 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD. Here he managed the refurbishment of the
Commonwealth Bank Banking Chamber, a heritage interior that included extensive marble and bronze works. The
Banking Chamber was required to remain fully operational throughout construction with the Bank stipulating low
levels of noise and vibration throughout the works. As testament to the success of the Brookfield Multiplex
approach to working in operational environments, there were no complaints during this time.
Kieran then worked on tenders within the head office New Business team where he developed detailed
construction methodologies for potential projects. Following the successful conversion of Mark Moran at Vaucluse,
a high end residential aged care project, Kieran joined the site team as Project Engineer. His earlier involvement in
the planning for the project provided him with a thorough understanding of the project as he worked with the design
team to bring the architectural concept from preliminary stages to a fully coordinated design. He has now guided a
relatively inexperienced team through the construction of 40000m2 of concrete structure and led the procurement
and installation of 140T of structural steel which included an atrium steel support structure, a spiral stair, and an
independent café structure.
