Connotations
The spiral shows that there could be a plot twist and confusion. Causing the
spectators to get enticed and is typical in a thriller genre. Also, as the spiral is placed
on her face it shows that something is going to go wrong and it is twisted and cruel.
Furthermore, because of the woman’s facial expression it portrays that she could be
screaming this links with the spiral being a sound wave.
The iconography of the tie demonstrates that it is a key element in the film. The tie
on the poster is twisted. This conveys that it can be used for strangling or tying a not.
The tie is red which connotes that it could link with the theme danger and murder.
This makes the audience feel uneasy and anxious.
The title ‘FRENZY’ is all it big caps demonstrating that it is fast paced and is the
narrative of the film. Frenzy could suggest that the theme of a situation is out of
control and the murderer is a maniac.
The yellow figure demonstrates that it is murderer as it is holding the tie. Also, it is a
yellow figure not a face to make a sense of an enigma and unawareness of who the
murderer is. This catches the audience’s attention because they are intrigued to
know who the killer is. Furthermore, the figure is in yellow suggesting that he is a
coward and may frame someone for his crimes.
The woman portrays that the theme in the film is the obsession with women that the
murderer has. Also, that the murderer objectifies women and manipulates them so
that he can murder them. This could link with the use of the spiral as the women are
lured in by the murderer’s charm and manipulation.
The colour black connotes darkness and the murderer hiding in the shadows. This
could suggest that the murderer’s thoughts are dark and is under the raider. This
causes the audience to feel a sense of suspense and is unaware of who the ‘neck tie
murderer’ is.
