Haiku
• Three lines
• Five syllables, seven syllables, five
syllables
• Does it have to rhyme? No!

Limerick
• Five lines
•AABBA rhyme scheme
• Does it rhyme? Yes!

6. LET’S REVIEW: POETIC FORMS
Sonnet
• Fourteen lines
•Three quatrains and a rhyming couplet
o Quatrain: Four lines; first and third lines rhyme
with each other and second and fourth lines rhyme
with each other.
o Couplet: Two lines that rhyme with each other.
• Does it rhyme? Yes!

Acrostic
• Each line begins with a certain letter
• The beginning letters spell out a
word or phrase
• Does it have to rhyme? No!

8. LET’S REVIEW: POETIC ELEMENTS
Rhythm
• Stressed and unstressed syllables
• Example: iambic pentameter: Clap it
out!
Rhyme
• Words that end with the same sound
•Example: bat & cat
Alliteration
•Words that start with the same consonant
•Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of
pickled peppers
Imagery
•Vivid descriptive words
•Example: lush green grass, golden sun

• comparison of two things using the
words “like” or “as”
•Example: Her voice was like a song.
Metaphor
• comparison of two unlike things without
using the words “like” or “as”
•Example: Every teardrop is a waterfall.
