6. Counseling Reminders
■ Please be aware that scheduling is very complex. Counselors do not
have the ability to overload a class. If you have any questions about
class size, please see your Department Chair.
■ Please always send students to the counseling office with a pass.
■ If you have a concern about a student being suicidal, please contact
the counselor immediately. If you cannot reach the counselor, please
call the Counseling Secretary, Linda Aiello, and she will find another
counselor to assist you.
■ Do not send a student that may be suicidal to the Counseling Office
alone.

10. Refresher -
What is the difference between IEPs and 504s?
Both are legal, detailed documents intended to protect students and
outline how a student with a medical diagnosis and/or a disability can
best learn.
Students with 504s have medical diagnosis that make them eligible to
receive accommodations. These students are in the general education
setting even if they have accommodations such as small group testing.
Generally, students with IEPs go through an extensive data collection
process of 6-8 weeks and testing. They often will have specific goals that
are monitored throughout the school year by the IEP team.
10
11. So you have a student with an IEP?
■ Please read the IEPs. Don’t be surprised by IEP content
in a meeting with the parents.
■ Provide all accommodations and keep a record of
their use or if a student does not use the
accommodation.
■ The gradebook comment section is a good way to
keep track of testing accommodations.
■ The gradebook comment section is actually a
great place to keep track of a lot of things...
11
12. So you’ve been asked to attend an IEP meeting?
You don’t want to spend all day in that room with no AC and you don’t
want to end up in court, so follow these guidelines:
■ Be there. If you are working the day of a meeting you should be at
the meeting. If you are not able to attend, please provide advanced
notice and written student input.
■ Be on time.
■ IEP meetings are not parent-teacher conferences. Stick to IEP
relevant topics. For example you don’t have to detail your final
project of the year in October.
12
13. So you’ve been asked to attend an IEP meeting?
■ Please provide direct feedback when asked for your
professional opinion or recommendation.
■ Don’t ask the parent or student what they “want to do”.
Student and parent input is extremely valuable to the
team, but it should be considered alongside the input of
all team members, not in place of it.
■ Show compassion and not anger. They are kids.
13
14. So you’ve been asked to attend an IEP meeting?
■ Do not make qualifying statements when asked if a student’s uses or needs
an accommodating.
■ Example of what not to say: “ John does not use extended time this year,
but we should probably leave it in because this subject gets more difficult
next year.”
■ Example of what to say: “John does (does not) currently need and (or)
utilize extended time testing.”
■ If a teacher details a problem behavior in sufficient detail, just agree or
disagree with the observation. That is all that is required. Please stop
beating the dead horse. He has had enough. He is dead already.
■ IEP are about one student and their individual needs and goals.
14
15. Wait. Now I have a 504 meeting!?!
➔ Know your students’ accommodations and follow
them.
◆ Look for the flags in IC.
◆ Teachers will be asked to verify their rosters at a
later date (Rob will send out Google Form, which
gives you a chance to check the flags).
➔ Document if the student is using extended time
and/or small group testing (if they have it as an
accommodation) in the grade book comment section.
15
16. Wait. Now I have a 504 meeting!?!
➔ Be on time to all meetings.
◆ If there is an issue, let the person running the meeting know.
● Assigned a duty? 504s and IEPs trump duties, so get
coverage or ask one of us for help.
◆ Can’t be there? Email your input before the meeting. There is
nothing worse than not being able to provide parents with
information about a class.
◆ What to bring? Student data such as grades, work samples,
attendance reports, pictures of them on their phone. Be ready
to give valuable feedback about your student and not just
that they are “nice” or “doing good”.
16
17. Got QUESTIONS? Here is who to contact:
➔ IEPs?
◆ The student’s
Caseload Manager
◆ Special Education
Department Head
Craig Woodall
◆ Special Education
Administrator
Ashley Johnessee
17
➔ 504s?
◆ 9th and 10th

◆ 11th and 12th
Rob Meinberg
20. REMEDIATION Tables
➔ Located in the Media Center like previous years.
➔ Tables manned by teachers from each department
(duties TBA).
➔ Goal is to include student tutors at each table starting
in September.
➔ The idea is to help students with content or provide a
place for students to complete work in that content area.
◆ Second Wave Learning
➔ This is not where we want students to continue to
complete tests/quizzes.
20
21. TESTING Room - 2146
➔ Why the change?
◆ Feedback from both teachers and students saying it
is something they want to see.
◆ Stronger testing security.
◆ Complaints about noise while taking a quiz or test in
the Media Center.
◆ Originally, LnL was not designed to make up
tests/quizzes but we recognize the need for a space
to do this during the school day.
21
22. TESTING Room - 2146
➔ Computer Lab 2146 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
➔ Manned by Counselors on a rotating schedule.
➔ A testing crate will be located in Victoria’s Office with the
other crates.
◆ Please place tests and quizzes into the appropriate folder
labeled by department. Completed tests will be placed
back into the crate, just like previous years. Remember
to come get your completed assessments!
➔ ALL ASSESSMENTS should be completed in the testing room.
◆ Use this to help with Second Wave Learning
Assessments!
22
23. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ What is it?
◆ When you formally write up a student for their
decision not to complete assignments.
◆ Students are then required to attend Lunch and
Learn to complete those assignments. If they do
not, there are further disciplinary actions such as
Friday Night School and/or ISS.
23
24. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ When do I refer a student?
◆ When you exhausted your in-class expectations.
◆ Referrals should be completed in a timely manner.
● If an assignment was due two days ago, you have not used your
in-class procedures if you immediately refer the student to us.
● If an assignment was due two units ago, you are not referring
your students in a timely manner because the relevancy of the
material has passed.
◆ Remember the new grading guideline: If the summative has been
completed, the opportunity for completing formatives is (generally)
over. REMEMBER - FAIR & REASONABLE GRADING!
24
25. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ What is the same as last year?
◆ Students who are referred to Lunch and Learn will be
located in the back corner of the Media Center.
◆ You will need to fill out a triplicate form and note
where missing work is located (either attached to
form, on itsLearning/Google Doc, or emailed) and have
the student sign. Something work better for you?
Let’s talk!
◆ You will need to place triplicate forms in Pridgen’s
mailbox OR in holder outside office in 2006.
25
26. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ What is the same as last year?
◆ Students who skip Lunch and Learn will be
assigned Friday Night School so they have the
opportunity to complete the work they are
missing.
● Last year we had approximately 90 referrals
for skipping Lunch and Learn during the
second semester alone.
26
27. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ You spoke, we listened: What is new this year?
◆ Referral days will only run Monday - Thursday. That will
leave Friday available for us to keep students accountable
and refer them to Friday Night School.
● If a student is referred on a Thursday, they will be
expected to attend Monday. Yes, it gives them extra
time to complete the assignment however, they still are
required to turn in work to us and attend LnL time.
◆ There will be a digital sign in/out so you will be able to
check attendance for the students you refer when needed.
27
28. Lunch and Learn REFERRALS
➔ You spoke, we listened: What is new this year?
◆ Students are expected to attend the following day at the
start of the lunch period.
◆ No passes will be sent out. We will need your help to
remind students during your 4th or 5th periods, especially
at the start of school.
◆ No phones will be allowed in the referral area. Students
who need technology will be given a Chromebook or
allowed to use their own computers.
28
29. Senior Saddled Up
■ Semester 1: November - December (1 session)
■ Semester 2: February - May (3 sessions)
■ Any senior failing a course will be required to
attend LnL in order to raise their grades.
■ If they have IE2, the student will have it
revoked for their assigned lunch period until
the grade has been remediated.
29
30. When will Lunch and Learn begin?
■ Lunch and Learn IN THE MEDIA CENTER will
start on Wednesday the 7th.
■ Lunch and Learn Referrals will start the week of
August 19th.
■ Forms will be located in the mailing room,
Pridgen’s office (2006) and Meinberg’s
office (1861).

R E L A T I O N S H I P S.
You are the key to Student Support.
■ Remember to get to know your students not only through class, but through
other activities they are involved in. We are about the whole child.
■ Communicate with families through phone calls and emails, not just when
necessary but to also celebrate a success (or just a good day) in class.
■ Provide valuable feedback to your students. Help them grow and not that
their work is “ok” or “needs improvement”.
■ Have confidence in all of your students. They all may not accomplish
something the same way, but your belief in them is half the battle.
