ANNOUNCEMENT
You will get a One Pager on
Friday in your mailbox with all
the information covered today.
Information will also be made
available through the LHS
Staff Handbook in the PL
folder after beginning

5. What are
Norms?
Why Norms?
Norms are a set of
agreements about how
the group will work
overall and how
members will work with
each other.
Norms increase trust,
productivity, and better
discussions.
➔ No more than 5
➔ Breakdown
expectations into
behaviors
➔ How will you hold
each other
accountable?

is not. We will do better.
2. This year they will - and provide
some to you as well.
3. Us too. The Instructional Coaches
will be doing the rest this year.

Tell us what you want…
[Some focus items are:
Planning, Feedback, Literacy, &
Active Engagement]
20. What exactly
is the point of a PLC?
PLCs operate under the assumption
that the key to improved learning for
students is continuous job-imbedded
learning for educators.
With that in mind, we want to
enhance and improve on what we
already have in place with content
teams.
20
21. 21
A New Protocol:
Content Team Norms
(Come on - you knew you’d see those again)
➔ Using the guidelines from earlier,
you will create a set of Norms with
your Content Team.
➔ Why? Collaboration & equity in
engagement!
22. 22
A New Protocol:
Help keep meetings focused
➔ GDocs Minutes & Reflection Form
◆ One per PLC
◆ One per Month
● Even if you meet more,
only one required
● Fill out as you meet
◆ Located in the Staff Handbook
◆ Responses go to admin for
reading pleasure (& to answer
any questions you might have)
23. 23
A New Protocol:
Meeting Calendar
➔ PLC meetings can be used to
invite Instructional Coaches in or
as a formative (& maybe even
informal) walk through. We will
add PLC meetings to a calendar to
help encourage this.
24. 24
We know that a little
differentiation will be necessary
depending on the Content Team.
Some of you could write the book on a
functional team and others, well, let’s face
it, have room for growth.
Especially if you are “on an island” with your content, we may need to
adapt how you document your planning.
Chat with Rob and Amanda because we want it to work for you and not
just be something else you have to do!
25. 25
Next Steps [PLC Facilitator]
An email will be sent out at the end of the day. Please
fill out the information by Friday, September 27th.
Next Steps [PLC Member]
Go to the next meeting and be awesome.

I am new
(or blocked
it out)…
What
is the
HORNS
Board?
The HORNS Board is what we created last
year to make your Professional Learning
personalized with choice, add value for
the activities you already do, & provide
ideas to help push you out of your teaching
comfort zone and try something new.
28. This year we worked with other
teachers to design the HORNS
board options available.
Look out for new activities
including:
➔ More ways to work with an
Instructional Coach
➔ Building relationships outside of
your department
➔ Getting creative with collaboration
➔ Finally going to visit Laura King’s
classes to see how she manages all
those kids with all those knives!
28
29. 29
The 2019-2020 Edition
➔ The board is open from September - April.
◆ Yes, if you did some county work this
summer or scored AP tests (etc, etc) it
can count!
➔ But, you must do a reflection for every
activity.
◆ Reflections will now be made available to
your TKES admin so they can see all the
additional work you do as well.
◆ After every reflection, your name goes in
a drawing for rewards. Rewards like
TShirts, Giddy Up Grill, and coffee will be
drawn monthly.
➔ Everyone is responsible for a HORNS, either 5
vertical or 5 horizontal, by April. (6 months. 5
33. 33
1. “I’ve been named teacher of the
year before. I don’t need a coach.”
1. “They don’t know my content.”
1. “I’ve been teaching since before
she graduated college. Why
should she tell me what to do?”
2. “I am too busy for one more thing.”
1. “They are just spies for the admin
or my TKES observer.”
2. “It is just another new initiative. It
will blow over soon.”
1. Did Michael Jordan have a coach? Does Kirby Smart
have a mentor? Do businesses hire leadership
coaches? Can you hire a life coach? We all need
someone to help us improve, reflect, or for support -
even if we are already at the top.
2. Good teaching is good teaching, whether it is AP Bio,
on-level US History, or a small group lit class. In fact, it
is almost better not to know the content!
3. Coaching is a partnership. A collaboration. Both
coach and teacher can learn and grow from each other
(especially how Dr. D envisions it here).
1. Totally get that. That is why we have many coaching
options including some that don’t take up extra time.
Or, if the cycle is done the way it is intended, planning
with a coach happens when you plan a lesson.
2. Everything you work on with a coach is confidential
(well, besides the big 3). Remember, it is a partnership,
not a way to spy on you.
3. Not so much. Coaching has been around since the late
90’s and is only becoming more popular. In states up
north and even in elementary schools down the street,
working with a coach is the norm. So get on board!
34. 34
So what is it exactly then?
➔ It is evidence
based.
➔ IC’s work off the
teacher’s goals for
the teacher’s
growth.
➔ It is supportive.
➔ It is confidential &
built on mutual
respect.
➔ It is not based on
bias or
judgements.
➔ It is not a
competition to
show off.
➔ It is not treating
the teacher as a
student.
➔ It is not evaluative.
At all.
35. 35
Ok...
How can I use a coach?
➔ Invite them in to chart
things like teacher to
student talk time, levels
of questioning, & even
who you address
comments &/or
questions too.
➔ Use them with your PLC
to design a unit or
create an assessment.
➔ Need a new rubric?
Create one together for
an unbiased
perspective.
➔ Try out a new strategy
& invite them in to co-
teach it or observe
them trying it with their
class first.
➔ At your wits end with
that class? Brainstorm
ideas or have them
come in to see it with
fresh eyes.
➔ Use them as a sounding
board for remediation
ideas or differentiation
➔ And many more….

How do I sign up?

Chair
