From the surveys I collected at school, the main
gender who answered them was male. This is
good because when I used the social site Tumblr
to gather results on the band 85 females said
they like the band “Bastille” whose music I am
using for the video compared to the 30 boys.
The reason I used both surveys and Tumblr was
to see what each gender likes about both the
band and also music videos. Giving me a
different view from both sides.

What age range are you ?
I conducted my surveys within a school as the
target audience I will be promoting to are
around the age of students. The age range I
gained was mainly 11-16 years old this gives me
the starting point for my target market. Where
the age I will go up to is about the 25 age target,
this will be because when I went to a concert I
physically saw the age range which attended.
This gave me an idea to who their music would
appel to.

What genre of music do you enjoy?
The results of this question was quite mixed due
to the fact that most people gave more than
one answer. The most popular of the two are
Pop and Alternative Rock. This is unsurprising as
these two genres have become far more popular
over the last few years. The band “Bastille”
which I have chosen to create a video for are a
mix between the two genres making it appeling
to the age ranges I have surveyed.

The audience had mixed views when it came to this question. As
many only really enjoyed music videos sometimes, meaning that
the video needs to be advertised well enough that it creates an
atmosphere of unsureness around the video making the
audience want to view it.
When it came to looking at why people answered what they did
many said that they liked to watch the videos to see how the
lyrics are connected and also to see if the video is trying to give
another meaning to the lyrics. People found the videos
interesting as it created another side to the story, to what they
have first thought when just hearing the song. One person added
that “Music is for listening not for watching” this showed that
some people might not be interested in videos. This means I
must create something they are interested in.

Most people liked the idea of a music video telling a story. I
believe the reason for this is because it gives the lyrics more
meaning, but also ideas can be created from this story such as
“why has certain things happened in the video?”
“what could happen next?”
By creating videos with stories this allows the artist to make a
string of videos all connected together by one story. Meaning
that it gives the audience a sense of continuity. Stories are
important to the audience as it presents the idea of escapism
in a way that by listing to a song, the person is letting go of
their problems and joining the life of the artist. Therefore why
so many people turn to music when they are in a down mood
to escape.

Lyrics are a key part when it comes to creating a
music video as they provided the basic outline for
what is happening. This is why it is no surprise that
they are the most popular when it comes to what
tells the story. The lyrics feels as if someone is
telling a personal story which the audience are
being allowed into. Making the listing experience
feel more personal. The video came runner up as it
gives visual and life to the lyrics, helping to portray
the point to the audience. Audiences seem to
prefer when the audio and the visual match, as it
makes the viewing process easier for them.

A large amount of people said no to this question.
This was because they feel a) like the video is not
interesting enough or b) their friends will not enjoy
it. This means that the videos need to be more
vibrant and entertaining in order to get people to
share them with their friends. The people who did
answer yes said they share the videos on sites such
as Twitter. This means that then the video is gaining
a wider view as everyone that follows that person
will also be able to view the footage as well.

A large amount of people said that they watch
music videos on sites such as YouTube. This
would be because it is both a free and quick way
of viewing and find the videos which they wish
to watch and also being suggested onto similar
videos. YouTube promotes videos which makes
the audience be able to see them as soon as
entering the site, but also allows comments.
Allowing the artists to see what their audience
really thinks of their work.

  • 3. What Gender are you ? From the surveys I collected at school, the main gender who answered them was male. This is good because when I used the social site Tumblr to gather results on the band 85 females said they like the band “Bastille” whose music I am using for the video compared to the 30 boys. The reason I used both surveys and Tumblr was to see what each gender likes about both the band and also music videos. Giving me a different view from both sides.

  • 5. What age range are you ? I conducted my surveys within a school as the target audience I will be promoting to are around the age of students. The age range I gained was mainly 11-16 years old this gives me the starting point for my target market. Where the age I will go up to is about the 25 age target, this will be because when I went to a concert I physically saw the age range which attended. This gave me an idea to who their music would appel to.

  • 7. What genre of music do you enjoy? The results of this question was quite mixed due to the fact that most people gave more than one answer. The most popular of the two are Pop and Alternative Rock. This is unsurprising as these two genres have become far more popular over the last few years. The band “Bastille” which I have chosen to create a video for are a mix between the two genres making it appeling to the age ranges I have surveyed.

  • 9. Do you like music videos? The audience had mixed views when it came to this question. As many only really enjoyed music videos sometimes, meaning that the video needs to be advertised well enough that it creates an atmosphere of unsureness around the video making the audience want to view it. When it came to looking at why people answered what they did many said that they liked to watch the videos to see how the lyrics are connected and also to see if the video is trying to give another meaning to the lyrics. People found the videos interesting as it created another side to the story, to what they have first thought when just hearing the song. One person added that “Music is for listening not for watching” this showed that some people might not be interested in videos. This means I must create something they are interested in.

I believe the reason for this is because it gives the lyrics more meaning, but also ideas can be created from this story such as “why has certain things happened in the video?” “what could happen next?” By creating videos with stories this allows the artist to make a string of videos all connected together by one story. Meaning that it gives the audience a sense of continuity. Stories are important to the audience as it presents the idea of escapism in a way that by listing to a song, the person is letting go of their problems and joining the life of the artist. Therefore why so many people turn to music when they are in a down mood to escape.

  • 13. What tells the story more the lyrics or the video ? Lyrics are a key part when it comes to creating a music video as they provided the basic outline for what is happening. This is why it is no surprise that they are the most popular when it comes to what tells the story. The lyrics feels as if someone is telling a personal story which the audience are being allowed into. Making the listing experience feel more personal. The video came runner up as it gives visual and life to the lyrics, helping to portray the point to the audience. Audiences seem to prefer when the audio and the visual match, as it makes the viewing process easier for them.

This was because they feel a) like the video is not interesting enough or b) their friends will not enjoy it. This means that the videos need to be more vibrant and entertaining in order to get people to share them with their friends. The people who did answer yes said they share the videos on sites such as Twitter. This means that then the video is gaining a wider view as everyone that follows that person will also be able to view the footage as well. Meaning free promotion for the song.

  • 17. What platform do you normally watch videos on? A large amount of people said that they watch music videos on sites such as YouTube. This would be because it is both a free and quick way of viewing and find the videos which they wish to watch and also being suggested onto similar videos. YouTube promotes videos which makes the audience be able to see them as soon as entering the site, but also allows comments. Allowing the artists to see what their audience really thinks of their work.
