8. INFORMATION
o Plant consisted of 4 reactors .
o Produced 10% of Ukraine’s electricity .
o Construction began in the 1978-1979 .
o Reactor #4 was completed in 1983 .
o At the time of the accident, reactors #5 and #6 were in
progress.
9. WHAT HAPPENED ?
• In the early morning hours of 26 April 1986, a testing error caused an explosion
at the Chernobyl nuclear power station.

11. Reasons for the accident
Workers lack of knowledge of reactor physics and engineering, as
well as lack of experience and training
• Delay
• The night shift was not prepared to carry out the experiment
• But it was still carried out
• The operators seem to have been unaware of the xenon
poisoning
Insufficient communication between the safety officers and the
operators in charge of the experiment
Disabled all safety system .
13. NW winds from the Black Sea carried the radiation for miles in
the following days.

14. The explosion released 190 tons of radioactive gases
into the atmosphere in only 32 hours.
15. In all 150,000 square kilometres in Belarus, Russia and
Ukraine were contaminated .

16. In total some 200,0000 people are believed to have been
relocated as a result of the accident.

21. THE LAND OF BELARUS
10% of the land is unusable
25% of the country's farmland and forest contaminated at a
dangerous level

22. FOOD & WATER
Milk—Farmers have to watch the radiation level in
milk.
Fish—Cannot be eaten, as water absorbs radiation and
fats concentrate it .
