8. Exactly twenty five years ago, in April 1986 this

leading to explosions in its core.

of radioactive contamination into the
atmosphere, which spread over much of
Western USSR and Europe.

The accident occurred during an experiment
scheduled to test a potential safety emergency
core cooling feature, which took place during
the normal shutdown procedure.
12. Rough infringements of service regulations of
the atomic power station, made by its personnel,
are the following:
•Experiment carrying out "at any cost", despite
change of a condition of the reactor;
•The conclusion from work of serviceable
technological protection which simply would stop the
reactor still before it has got to a dangerous mode;
• Hushing up of scale of failure in the first days
management CNPP.
13.
14. The bulk of the work was carried out in 1986-
1987, were attended by approximately 240 000
people. The total number of liquidators
(including following years) was about 600 000.
15. The radiation levels in the worst-hit areas of
the reactor building have been estimated to be
5.6 roentgens per second, equivalent to more
than 20,000 roentgens per hour. A lethal dose
is around 500 roentgens over 5 hours, so in
some areas, unprotected workers received
fatal doses within minutes.
16.
17. Evacuation developments
Announcement for the evacuation of Prypiat.
The evacuation began at 14:00 on 27 April.

Rivers, lakes and reservoirs

is located next to the Pripyat River,
which feeds into the Dnipro River
reservoir system, one of the largest
surface water systems in Europe.
21. Groundwater
Groundwater was not badly
affected by the Chernobyl
accident since radionuclides
with short half-lives decayed
away long before they could
affect groundwater supplies.

After the disaster, four square kilometers of pine forest
directly downwind of the reactor turned reddish-brown
