2. During culturing of silkworms, a few
unreelable cocoons are formed due to
genetic defects, diseases, pests, improper
rearing techniques, mounting and
transportation of cocoons resulting in
formation of defective cocoons which are
not suitable for reeling, hence sorted out
before marketing.
There are fourteen types of defective
cocoons - few being flimsy, immature
urinated fumigated, melted, spotted
double cocoons, double cocoons are
large, coarse, irregular spun by two

3. DUPION SILK
It is reeled from double cocoons (French word or Duppione). It is pure, plain,
crisp type of silk fabric which is hand drawn, has slubby look due to its
uneven and beautiful texture.
The raw material for processing of dupion silk is collected by brokers from
different units as it is not produced on large scale and then pooled as lots and
sold to dupion reelers. One such unit is Dupion Manufacturers at Varanasi. .

5. HISTORY OF DUPION IN INDIA
The credit for discovery of silk in India is given to late Laxminarayana, a textile
graduate and a Bangalore weaver by profession who was asked by an American
in 1940’s to weave a fabric similar to Thai dupion silk sample.
The challenge was accepted by Laxminarayana who impressed the American with
weaved sample who then invested huge capital for establishment of big dupion
