body.
• Decrease inflammation, lowering tissue damage
• Reduce the activity of the immune system by affecting the the
production and function of the white cells
• Treats inflammatory conditions as vasculitis, myositis, arthritis,
and lupus
3. TYPES OF STEROIDS
• Anabolic Steroids- Resembles testosterone, builds muscle
• Glucocorticosteroids- Used to reduce inflammatory, treating
rashes, bronchitis, and arthities
• Minerocorticosteroids- Used for salt and water regulation
• Slang names (“Roids”, “Juice”)
4. WHY USE STEROIDS?
• People use steroids in efforts to decrease body inflammatory
• Ex: Arthritis can be a condition in which steroids will be
prescribed
• Steroids are used in athletic sports
• Ex: Athletes use to improve athletic ability and build muscle
mass
5. SIDE AFFECTS
• Oral: Acne, blurred vision, high blood pressure, weight gain,
increased growth of body hair, and restlessness
• Injection: Infections, bleeding in joint, rupture of tendon, skin
