Backed by the Proven Seed
Performance Promise
Invest in Proven Seed and have confidence your investment is
protected by the industry’s leading guarantee. The Proven Seed
Performance Promise gives growers the opportunity to replant forage
plantings at half of the original invoiced cost in the case of failure.
Establishing productive forage stands can be difficult. Proven Seed
offers top-quality forage varieties stringently tested under local
conditions to help minimize risk. Combined with our Performance
Promise forage producers can grow with confidence.
Based on research, our Proven Seed forage experts believe cover
crops are detrimental to forage establishment. We recommend a
lower seeding rate for cover crops.
Coverage under the hps®
brand
Developed for our forage seed products, the hps brand is the common
seed line from CPS. It provides forage growers with coverage under the
best warranty in the industry and the same high-quality standards as
our certified seed.

Quality assurance
When selecting seed lots for our forages, careful
consideration is taken to ensure you have the highest level
of success possible. Proven Seed forages, including Master
Blends and hps-branded varieties, conform to the rigid purity
standards of less than 10 weed seeds per 25g.
STANDARD WEED SEEDS 25/G

The number of weed seeds per bag of seed can greatly
impact the quality of a forage stand in the long term. Only
top quality seed goes into our forage seed bags.
Testing and evaluation
CPS has access to industry leaders who complete thorough
testing and evaluation of Proven Seed forages including:
•	Evaluating new equipment to test soil salinity and create
management plans using forages to limit the effect of
soil salinity
•	Expansion of sorghum hybrids as silage and grazing warm
season grass options
•	Testing of seed enhancement and coating options for
improved seedling health and forage productivity
•	Use of forage legumes to increase pasture productivity
and rejuvenation
•	Winter survival, yield and forage quality testing for new
advanced forage varieties
•	Continued evaluation of Master Blends
•	Demo and observation trials at CPS Research Farms:
Watrous, SK, Neapolis, AB and Rosebank, MB
Forage incentive program
The 2018 Forage Incentive Program, offered by CPS and
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), helps conservation-minded
producers like you with the cost of planting forages so you
can enhance your grazing options, improve your bottom line
and add to your land’s natural value. The program includes
the extensive line-up of Proven Seed forage varieties.
“The CPS/DUC partnership is a win-win for everyone. The
Proven Seed line of forage products are of the highest
quality in the industry and their performance is exemplary.
As CPS customers take advantage of the program, it further
extends Ducks Unlimited Canada’s mission of conserving
and restoring perennial ground cover. Based on the number
of landowners participating and inquiring about the program
from across the Prairies, we can confidently say that this
program works. Its future is strong and we look forward to
many years of continued success.”

FORAGE PRODUCTION
1 FORWARD PLANNING: FIELD SELECTION
AND PREPARATION
Soil:Identifyandconsidertheimpactofsoilfactorslikeflooding,
drainage, low pH (acidity), texture and salinity that may impede
establishment, productivity or species/variety selection.
Weeds: Control winter annual, biennial and perennial weeds
like Canada thistle, quackgrass, white cockle and scentless
chamomile in the two years prior to planting a forage crop.
Pre-harvest glyphosate applications are useful in this regard.
Previous crop: Excess trash can cause challenges with
forage establishment. Assess and remediate fields in the fall
prior to a spring planting.
Herbicide residues: Ensure no residual herbicides have
been applied in the years prior to planting a forage crop.
2 VARIETY AND SPECIES SELECTION
End use: Is the forage crop intended for pasture or hay or
both?
Livestock: Is the crop intended for dairy, beef, horses or
other livestock?
Soil type and variation/climatic conditions: These factors
can affect the species, variety or Master Blend you choose.
3 SEEDING TIME
Late May - Early April: Excellent moisture and cool
temperatures are good for establishment. Limited
opportunity for pre-seeding weed control. Frost hazard.
Mid-May - Mid-June: Good moisture and cool
temperatures. Opportunity for pre-seeding weed control.
Timely fall dormant: Seeds germinate the following
spring when moisture is good and temperatures are cool.
Frost damage may occur.
4 SEEDING DEPTH
Small seed: Forage seed is generally tiny and thus has
little food reserves needed to generate emergence. Forages
should be seeded no deeper than ½ to ¾ deep into a
firm seedbed (your footprint should not sink more than
3
⁄8). Packing is necessary for good seed to soil contact.
Broadcast seed should be incorporated shallowly and
packed accordingly.
5 SEEDING RATES
Alfalfa and Master Blends: Aim for 10 lbs/ac in direct
seeded situations and 15 lbs/ac if the forage seed is
broadcast and incorporated.
Individual grass species: Consult your local CPS
representative.
6 COMPANION CROPS
With or without a companion crop: Forage crops
establish better and generate consistently more productive
stands if seeded without a cover or companion crop. If a
companion crop must be seeded (to offset soil erosion or
for the need of greenfeed or silage), reduce the cover crop
seeding rate to 50% of normal and remove the crop as
silage or greenfeed as soon as possible.
Top 10 factors for success
4
7 WEED CONTROL
Planning: Perennial or biennial weeds should be taken
care of prior to the year of planting (see #1).
In crop: Herbicide options are limited in forages. Refer
to herbicide labels for safe use and consult with your
CPS representative on herbicides for weed control in
seedling and established forages.
8 FERTILITY
Nutrient demand: Productive forage stands have huge
nutrient demands. In hay crops, much of the nutrients
the crop takes up are removed from the field as the hay
is hauled off.
Nitrogen/sulfur: Consider soil test levels, yield
projections, forage mix makeup (% grass to legume),
and timing of application (early spring or late fall) when
developing a fertility plan.
Phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients: Soil
tests are good indicators of levels for these nutrients
and the need (or not) to apply supplemental P, K and
micronutrient fertilizer.
9 HARVEST MANAGEMENT
Tame pasture: Grazing method, grazing density and
species grown are factors to consider in getting the most
out of the forage stand.
Hay: Consider the end use of the hay (i.e. for beef,
dairy, or other), soil productivity, climatic conditions and
whether one is targeting yield vs quality in determining
the best approach to good harvest management.
10 EQUIPMENT
Seeding equipment requirements for successful
forage establishment:
• Provide uniform seed placement at ½” to ¾”depth
• Pack the soil around the seed
• Meter various sizes and shapes of seeds accurately
• Distribute seed uniformly
• Use a seed agitator to prevent fluffy seed from
bridging and to ensure more even flow

VR Total
Flexibility and performance
VR Total is a dormant alfalfa variety that reaches the late bud stage
three to five days later than the early maturing alfalfa varieties. The
maturity difference between VR Total and the early alfalfas continues
to widen with VR Total reaching full-flower a week to ten days later.
This slower paced growth is a combination of fall dormancy and
germplasm that has been selected to mature slowly, and results in an
extra week to ten days of harvest opportunity.
Cutting schedule flexibility
In management studies, VR Total has consistently shown the ability
to handle aggressive bud or full maturity harvest systems. In the
results of two cutting management studies, VR Total was side-
by-side with six check alfalfa varieties and VR Total performed
competitively. Wheel traffic was applied after each harvest to each
variety to further stress the entries.
VR Total is featured in our Dualmaster Master Blend.
Equinox
High-yielding multi-cut alfalfa
Equinox combines later fall dormancy, excellent winter hardiness, fast
recovery after cutting and excellent forage yield potential. Equinox
was selected based on outstanding yield from research conducted by
both CPS and the Western Canadian Forage Testing Program.
•	Very rapid recovery after cutting, providing larger second and
third cuts
•	Good winter survival and persistence for cleaner, longer lasting
stands
•	Disease Resistance Index of 30 (Source: University of
Wisconsin), the highest possible score in the system
•	Highest yielding variety in the Lethbridge Irrigated Alfalfa Trials,

To help preserve the benefits of our trait technology, an Insect Resistance Management
(IRM) plan must be part of every farmer’s production strategy.
Farmers who purchase corn products that are not designated as RIB Complete®
required
to plant a refuge that is appropriate for that product.
As part of the IRM plan for RIB Complete corn, experts recommend that growers
incorporate crop rotations (out of corn), use of pyramided traits for below ground pests
and, when appropriate, use of insecticides to minimize selection of resistant populations.
Farmers should monitor their RIB Complete corn fields for targeted insect pests and
contact their local Monsanto representative, retailer, or Monsanto’s Technical Support
line at 1-800- 667-4944 if they observe any unusual performance problems.

  • 3. To produce quality feed, you need to start with the right forage variety. Yield, winter hardiness, regrowth potential and drought tolerance are all important factors to consider when choosing a variety or blend. At Crop Production Services (CPS) we want to help you grow a productive forage crop. Our stellar line-up of Proven Seed forage products are backed by industry leading genetics and expert agronomic advice. Our strict quality assurance standards result in top quality seed, and our Master Blends are precisely tailored to fit the unique needs of your operation. With our extensive forage seed offering, we have an option that fits your acres. And the Proven Seed Performance Promise backs all of our proprietary forage varieties. It’s our guarantee that you can count on our products to deliver the results you expect. Look to CPS as your trusted partner – setting you up for success with Proven Seed forages. SET YOUR SIGHTS ON SUCCESS Careful planning and hard work are key steps on the road to maximum production, which includes the best hay and forage selection for your farm. Set yourself up for success by making the right choice for your business, with trusted forages from Proven® Seed. 1 2018FORAGEGUIDEMANAGEMENTPRODUCTSBLENDSRESOURCES
  • 4. Backed by the Proven Seed Performance Promise Invest in Proven Seed and have confidence your investment is protected by the industry’s leading guarantee. The Proven Seed Performance Promise gives growers the opportunity to replant forage plantings at half of the original invoiced cost in the case of failure. Establishing productive forage stands can be difficult. Proven Seed offers top-quality forage varieties stringently tested under local conditions to help minimize risk. Combined with our Performance Promise forage producers can grow with confidence. Based on research, our Proven Seed forage experts believe cover crops are detrimental to forage establishment. We recommend a lower seeding rate for cover crops. Coverage under the hps® brand Developed for our forage seed products, the hps brand is the common seed line from CPS. It provides forage growers with coverage under the best warranty in the industry and the same high-quality standards as our certified seed. PROVEN OVER DECADES Leading forage varieties Customers who book proprietary Proven Seed forages by June 7, 2018 will be registered automatically for the Proven Seed Performance Promise. Eligibility requirements are highlighted in the warranty form. To learn more contact your local CPS representative or call the Forage Help Desk at 1-800-661-3334. 2
  • 5. Quality assurance When selecting seed lots for our forages, careful consideration is taken to ensure you have the highest level of success possible. Proven Seed forages, including Master Blends and hps-branded varieties, conform to the rigid purity standards of less than 10 weed seeds per 25g. STANDARD WEED SEEDS 25/G Proven 10 Certified 50 Common 75 The number of weed seeds per bag of seed can greatly impact the quality of a forage stand in the long term. Only top quality seed goes into our forage seed bags. Testing and evaluation CPS has access to industry leaders who complete thorough testing and evaluation of Proven Seed forages including: • Evaluating new equipment to test soil salinity and create management plans using forages to limit the effect of soil salinity • Expansion of sorghum hybrids as silage and grazing warm season grass options • Testing of seed enhancement and coating options for improved seedling health and forage productivity • Use of forage legumes to increase pasture productivity and rejuvenation • Winter survival, yield and forage quality testing for new advanced forage varieties • Continued evaluation of Master Blends • Demo and observation trials at CPS Research Farms: Watrous, SK, Neapolis, AB and Rosebank, MB Forage incentive program The 2018 Forage Incentive Program, offered by CPS and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), helps conservation-minded producers like you with the cost of planting forages so you can enhance your grazing options, improve your bottom line and add to your land’s natural value. The program includes the extensive line-up of Proven Seed forage varieties. “The CPS/DUC partnership is a win-win for everyone. The Proven Seed line of forage products are of the highest quality in the industry and their performance is exemplary. As CPS customers take advantage of the program, it further extends Ducks Unlimited Canada’s mission of conserving and restoring perennial ground cover. Based on the number of landowners participating and inquiring about the program from across the Prairies, we can confidently say that this program works. Its future is strong and we look forward to many years of continued success.” Craig Bishop DUC Regional Forages Lead, Prairies For more information visit ducks.ca or call: Alberta • Craig Bishop 1.866.301.3825 ext 1877 Saskatchewan • Provincial office 1.866.252.3825 Manitoba • Charlotte Crawley 204.729.3526 3 MANAGEMENT ALBERTA SASKATCHEWAN GET UP TO $100 / BAG MANITOBA GET UP TO $125 / AC
  • 6. FORAGE PRODUCTION 1 FORWARD PLANNING: FIELD SELECTION AND PREPARATION Soil:Identifyandconsidertheimpactofsoilfactorslikeflooding, drainage, low pH (acidity), texture and salinity that may impede establishment, productivity or species/variety selection. Weeds: Control winter annual, biennial and perennial weeds like Canada thistle, quackgrass, white cockle and scentless chamomile in the two years prior to planting a forage crop. Pre-harvest glyphosate applications are useful in this regard. Previous crop: Excess trash can cause challenges with forage establishment. Assess and remediate fields in the fall prior to a spring planting. Herbicide residues: Ensure no residual herbicides have been applied in the years prior to planting a forage crop. 2 VARIETY AND SPECIES SELECTION End use: Is the forage crop intended for pasture or hay or both? Livestock: Is the crop intended for dairy, beef, horses or other livestock? Soil type and variation/climatic conditions: These factors can affect the species, variety or Master Blend you choose. 3 SEEDING TIME Late May - Early April: Excellent moisture and cool temperatures are good for establishment. Limited opportunity for pre-seeding weed control. Frost hazard. Mid-May - Mid-June: Good moisture and cool temperatures. Opportunity for pre-seeding weed control. Timely fall dormant: Seeds germinate the following spring when moisture is good and temperatures are cool. Frost damage may occur. 4 SEEDING DEPTH Small seed: Forage seed is generally tiny and thus has little food reserves needed to generate emergence. Forages should be seeded no deeper than ½ to ¾ deep into a firm seedbed (your footprint should not sink more than 3 ⁄8). Packing is necessary for good seed to soil contact. Broadcast seed should be incorporated shallowly and packed accordingly. 5 SEEDING RATES Alfalfa and Master Blends: Aim for 10 lbs/ac in direct seeded situations and 15 lbs/ac if the forage seed is broadcast and incorporated. Individual grass species: Consult your local CPS representative. 6 COMPANION CROPS With or without a companion crop: Forage crops establish better and generate consistently more productive stands if seeded without a cover or companion crop. If a companion crop must be seeded (to offset soil erosion or for the need of greenfeed or silage), reduce the cover crop seeding rate to 50% of normal and remove the crop as silage or greenfeed as soon as possible. Top 10 factors for success 4
  • 7. 7 WEED CONTROL Planning: Perennial or biennial weeds should be taken care of prior to the year of planting (see #1). In crop: Herbicide options are limited in forages. Refer to herbicide labels for safe use and consult with your CPS representative on herbicides for weed control in seedling and established forages. 8 FERTILITY Nutrient demand: Productive forage stands have huge nutrient demands. In hay crops, much of the nutrients the crop takes up are removed from the field as the hay is hauled off. Nitrogen/sulfur: Consider soil test levels, yield projections, forage mix makeup (% grass to legume), and timing of application (early spring or late fall) when developing a fertility plan. Phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients: Soil tests are good indicators of levels for these nutrients and the need (or not) to apply supplemental P, K and micronutrient fertilizer. 9 HARVEST MANAGEMENT Tame pasture: Grazing method, grazing density and species grown are factors to consider in getting the most out of the forage stand. Hay: Consider the end use of the hay (i.e. for beef, dairy, or other), soil productivity, climatic conditions and whether one is targeting yield vs quality in determining the best approach to good harvest management. 10 EQUIPMENT Seeding equipment requirements for successful forage establishment: • Provide uniform seed placement at ½” to ¾”depth • Pack the soil around the seed • Meter various sizes and shapes of seeds accurately • Distribute seed uniformly • Use a seed agitator to prevent fluffy seed from bridging and to ensure more even flow 5 MANAGEMENT

  • 10. Halo Salt tolerant variety Halo alfalfa has improved salt tolerance breeding. • Halo alfalfa yield is only reduced by 20% under moderate salt stress, while a susceptible variety may have its yield reduced by as much as 40% under the same conditions. Halo alfalfa has regrowth salt tolerance similar to the NAAIC tolerant check variety (AZ‑90NDC‑ST)* • Good yield potential. Canadian screening trials are demonstrating strong improvement over the standard checks • Well suited to three and four cut systems, fall dormancy is rated at four • Good winter hardiness, 2.5** • Moderate multifoliate expression (84%) • Rated good for traffic tolerance • Not tolerant of flooding or heavy wet soils Halo is featured in our Saltmaster Master Blend and hps® Premium Alfalfa. * Source: US Variety Review Board, NAAIC Standard Test ** Winter hardiness rating at West Salem, WI, USA. VR Total Flexibility and performance VR Total is a dormant alfalfa variety that reaches the late bud stage three to five days later than the early maturing alfalfa varieties. The maturity difference between VR Total and the early alfalfas continues to widen with VR Total reaching full-flower a week to ten days later. This slower paced growth is a combination of fall dormancy and germplasm that has been selected to mature slowly, and results in an extra week to ten days of harvest opportunity. Cutting schedule flexibility In management studies, VR Total has consistently shown the ability to handle aggressive bud or full maturity harvest systems. In the results of two cutting management studies, VR Total was side- by-side with six check alfalfa varieties and VR Total performed competitively. Wheel traffic was applied after each harvest to each variety to further stress the entries. VR Total is featured in our Dualmaster Master Blend. Equinox High-yielding multi-cut alfalfa Equinox combines later fall dormancy, excellent winter hardiness, fast recovery after cutting and excellent forage yield potential. Equinox was selected based on outstanding yield from research conducted by both CPS and the Western Canadian Forage Testing Program. • Very rapid recovery after cutting, providing larger second and third cuts • Good winter survival and persistence for cleaner, longer lasting stands • Disease Resistance Index of 30 (Source: University of Wisconsin), the highest possible score in the system • Highest yielding variety in the Lethbridge Irrigated Alfalfa Trials, outperforming the check varieties by an average of 20% and out yielding the hybrid variety HybriForce 400 Source: Average Yield Performance – CPS Lethbridge Irrigated Alfalfa Trial AF07B2LB established 2007 and harvest results compiled 2008, 2009 and 2010. Farmers who purchase corn products that are not designated as RIB Complete® required to plant a refuge that is appropriate for that product. As part of the IRM plan for RIB Complete corn, experts recommend that growers incorporate crop rotations (out of corn), use of pyramided traits for below ground pests and, when appropriate, use of insecticides to minimize selection of resistant populations. Farmers should monitor their RIB Complete corn fields for targeted insect pests and contact their local Monsanto representative, retailer, or Monsanto’s Technical Support line at 1-800- 667-4944 if they observe any unusual performance problems.
