2. What is meant
by ETHANOL?
๏ Ethanol is a type of alcohol produced by
fermentation of sugars and starches or cellulosic
biomass.
๏ It is a colorless, flammable, clean-burning, high
octane fuel that is produced from renewable sources.
๏ Primary feedstock: Corn
๏ Secondary feedstock: sugarcane, sugar beet,
cellulose.
3. RAW
MATERIALS
๏ SUGARS: Sugarcane (molasses and juice), cane-sugar (clarified
concentrated syrup), sugar beet, beet sugar (diffusion juice and
beet molasses).
๏ Starchy materials: Corn, wheat, cassava, sweet sorghum.
๏ Lignocellulosic materials: Corn stover, cereal straws, sugarcane
bagasse.
5. Features of
Microbes
๏ Due to the small size, having a high
surface ratio.
๏ Due to having a resistant cell wall,
producing high concentration substances
leads to a faster fermentation rate.
๏ Have the ability to โpredigestโ the
available food source and release both
products and the intermediate
metabolites.
๏ Using immobilized cells of microbes by
treating with Calcium alginate to
adsorbed on the surface of materials.
๏ Using genetically modified microbes to
enhance the fermentation process.

6. Physical and
Chemical
requirements
of microbes
oPhysical requirements:
โขThe ideal pH is around 4.0-4.5.
โขThe initial temperature is kept between 21-26 ยบC.
โข Ethanol gets evaporated at 27 ยบC.
โข Aeration is initially required for the growth of microbes.
oChemical requirements:
โช Nitrogen source: Urea, ammonium sulfate etc..
โช Phosphorus source: Diammonium phosphate is the source.
โช Hydrolytic enzymes: They can also be added to convert biopolymers
and non-fermentable substances in the molasses to
monosaccharides or amino acids.
8. Ethanol
production by
FERMENTATION
PROCESS
๏ Ethanol fermentation is a biological
process in which one sugars molecule such
as glucose, fructose, and sucrose are
converted into cellular energy and thereby
produces two ethanol molecules and two
carbon dioxide molecules as metabolic
waste product.
๏ Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is most
commonly used to perform this
conversion in anaerobic condition.
๏ Zymomonas mobilis is frequenly employed
for alcohol production.
9. Ethanol
Utilization
๏ The personal care products industry is one of the largest users
of industrial ethanol.
๏ Ethanol is also used in many deodorants, lotions, hand
sanitizers, soaps, and shampoos.
๏ 100% ethanol is not used generally as motor fuel. A percentage
of ethanol is combined with the unleaded gasoline. This is
beneficial because the ethanol:-
โขDecreases the fuel cost
โขIncreases the fuel octane rating
โขDecreases the gasolineโs harmful emissions.
