Scarecrow
festival
awashBy Joshua Paterson
ONE thing you can’t do is control the weath-
er. You can just be as prepared as possible
and battle on and have a good time regard-
less. This is exactly what happened in
Deepwater over the weekend as unpre-
dictable weather failed to stop organisers and
the public from enjoying the Deepwater
Scarecrow and Wool Festival.
A freak gust of wind on Friday and later a
storm on Saturday morning resulted in a
number of marquees getting broken as well
as keeping crowd numbers down on previous
years, but organisers said the variety of this
year’s festival still meant those who did
attend had a wonderful time. Organiser Julie
Watt said they were proud of the amount of
variety they were able to offer at this year’s
festival.
“We excelled ourselves as a festival for the
amount of variety we had this year,” she said.
“The amount of stall holders and variety of
different foods and different events that real-
ly catered for all ages was just great.
“Apart from a few things we had to cancel
like the shearing as the sheep were wet, and
the woolly games, everyone said they had a
good time.”
Mrs Watt said one of the big highlights of
this year’s festival was the dunk-a-pollie
fundraising event which saw four different
politicians from the area line up to potential-
ly get showered in water all in the name of
raising funds. All proceeds raised from the
festival will be split between the Deepwater
School of Arts Hall, Deepwater Tennis and
Golf Clubs and the festival committee.
“Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall
was there and he got dunked, and Rob Taber
the independent candidate for New England
was there and he was giving Adam cheek and
it was quite funny because they know each
other well.
“Then Rob agreed to get dunked so they
were both great sports, and the two mayors
Col Price and Peter Petty also got dunked so
they were great too. The dunk a pollie was
very popular.”
Mrs Watts also told The Examiner the
musical performance of Warwick group the
Blue Violets was so good she is keen to see
them return in 2015.
“The Blue Violets from Warwick were just
fantastic. Their voices were exceptional and
we will be looking to get them back next
year,” she said.
Mrs Watt said though it was good for the
area to get some much needed rain the unpre-
dictable nature of the weather kept festival
organisers on their toes.
“It was great to get some rain because of
the drought but we could have done without
the wind which came with it,” she said.
“We had five marquees that were wrecked
unfortunately. One was taken by a big gust of
wind not long after we had set it up.
“Then one hour into the festival a storm
came through and wrecked a few more mar-
quees and a few stallholders had their stalls
and some of their produce blown away so it
was a bit of a shame.
