About Smithtown History  - The town was first settled around 1665. after rescuing a Native American Chief's kidnapped daughter,  was told that the Chief would grant title to all of the land Smith could encircle in one day.  Richard Smith claimed this land by riding his bull, Whisper.  The land that he rode around is current day Smithtown. Geography  – Smithtown is located in the middle of Long Island, and in Suffolk County.  Smithtown is 111.4 square miles in area, and 51% of it is water.
