Greenport Holiday Festival
Seasons Greetings!
The Greenport Business Association is pleased to announce our second annual winter
Greenport Holiday Festival.
Our mission: To bring to the Village of Greenport an extended season of activity
centered around it’s historic maritime past, and to introduce it’s lovely diverse present.
Besides it’s more obvious warm weather attractions Greenport is a year round community.
Every weekend beginning Saturday, November 27 with the lighting of
the tree in Mitchell Park, culminating on New Year’s Eve with a celebration
in the Carousel, and the raising of the anchor, Greenport will be buzzing
with holiday activity. Please join us in a toast to 2011.
A brief history of Greenport: In 1640 Barnabus Horton led a small band of
adventurers across the Atlantic and landed in Southold, the township that now includes
the Village of Greenport. Between 1795 and 1859 Greenport was a major whaling port.
In the early 19th century through World War II over 550 ships were built and launched in
Greenport. In the 1800’s the village had a strong impact on the fishing industry, supplying
food, oil, and fertilizer. During the first half of the 20th century oysters were a lucrative
industry, and are again having a resurgence. Beginning in 1884 the railroad and the
steam engine opened the area to the shipping to market of local farm crops of potatoes,
cauliflower, and other harvests. There is still growing and marketing of vegetables in the
area, but vineyards have replaced many of the potato fields, and many of the crops are
now organic. The end of the North Fork rail line is in Greenport, and remnants of the
turntable that rotated the large steam engines for their trip back to New York City can be
seen at the Railroad Museum. The area has a rich maritime and farming history that is
still evident along with the growing trade in tourism.

beginning with the lighting of the tree in Mitchell Park. Throughout December there
will be activities for both children and adults: Ice skating in the Mitchell Park Rink,
Children’s winter games, Traditional village holiday parade, Santa arriving
by boat to the Greenport Marina will reinforce our maritime history. The Floyd
Memorial Library will be presenting dramatic readings of traditional
Christmas stories for both adults and children, as well as family movies, and crafts
for children. Holiday concerts are scheduled at Breaknock Hall.
Historic tours of the village, and visits to select historic homes that have been
decorated for the holidays add to the winter festivities.
The shops and galleries will be offering many lovely gift items and consumables for the
holiday season. Clothing, accessories, and jewelry for fashionista’s on your list.

the sailors in your life, or for those who only dream of the sea. Once you select a gift there
