CWC BAKE SALE & KNIGHTS OF
COLUMBUS YARD SALE
Tony was happy to pose for

delicious hotdogs.
The community came out to try a bite at the
CWC annual bake sale. They had cakes, pies,
cookies, loaves and much more goodies.
The weather was spectacular for the bake
sale, which took place in the St. Therese
Parish parking lot, at Courtice North Road.
The Knights of Columbus also celebrated
their annual yard sale. The Knights cooked
up their famous sausages, with all proceeds
going back into the community.

Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather & the wonderful food
Watson Farms invited snapd Clarington to the first in a series of events to
be held there this year called, ‘Field to Fork.’ Guests were seated at a long
Tuscan style table in and amongst the seasonal crops that were featured
at Watson Farms. The meal was prepared by the watchful eye of award
winning chef Kathy Anyan, owner of Kcc Gourmet and Catering. After a
tour of the farm, everyone, including farmers, producers, culinary arti-
sans, and guest settled in to share a delicious meal together. As the meal
unfolded, the guests had an opportunity to learn about Watson’s farming
practices, and how the food was prepared. The weather was breathtaking,
and the meal left everyone satisfied.

new & improved Curves Newcastle to tryout some of the new equipment, with staff and clients
Curves owner Catherine Peterson celebrated the pur-
chase of new equipment with staff and clients on July
23, in Newcastle. Regional Councillor Willie Woo and
Councillor Wendy Partner also attended the celebra-
tions. Newcastle’s Curves now features new state of the
art circuit equipment. Clients can now use an electronic
card that stores individual workouts on each equip-
ment. This information can be accessed at home by
logging onto the website, or at the Curves store, to keep
track of each clients personal workout metrics.

It was a day full of glue, string, glitter, fabric and
all things craft at the Bowmanville Museum! Kids
participating in the Museum’s day camp were busy
crafting their very own photo puppet. All in prepara-
tion for the photo puppet theatre! The kids were also
excited to be participating in a talent show taking
place that afternoon. It proved to be a fun and excit-
ing day for all those involved. Similarly, the kids were
making photo props, a stylish silhouette and many
more memories throughout the course of the week.

CONCERTS IN THE
PARK - RAINSTONE
On July 17th, The Concerts In The Park lived up to
its name with another highly anticipated concert
at Bowmanville Rotary Park. The summer concert
was jam packed with local residents. Everyone was
singing along to the band and dancing to the tunes.
Many brought their family and friends, with chairs
and blankets to enjoy a cool, but great evening. All
proceeds were donated to the Bowmanville Memorial
Foundation. Residents had a blast. Come on down to
The Concerts In The Park, every Thursday evening
from 7 pm to 9 pm. This event was co-sponsored by St.

A Gift of Art was proud to present the 7th Annual Newcastle’s Art Show,
held this past July at the Newcastle Memorial Arena. Residents enjoyed
various activities which included showcases from more than 60 local art-
ists, musicians, prizes and draws, and an indoor lake. Children also played in
their own kid’s area. The admission was free but donations were accepted at
the door for A Gift of Art Gallery, a non-profit charitable organization. The
donations would help support the Gallery to keep its doors open so it can
continue to portray art work of local artists. Residents won door prizes and
scavenger hunt gifts which included VIA Rail round-trip tickets to Quebec
City, as well as Boots and Hearts tickets. Whether you were looking for a
special gift, purchase art for yourself, love the atmosphere of art in a rest-

As the weather cooled down, snapd
Clarington slowed down as well com-
pared to last month, which had our
photographers extremely busy. Our
photographers were out and about
covering various events within
our community. The staff at snapd
Clarington enjoyed being a part of
and photographing events such as
the Canada Day festivities through-
out Bowmanville and Newcastle, the
action packed Orono Case 1H Ultimate
Rodeo, the breathtaking Newcastle’s Art Show and the 10th
Annual Dragon Flies Dragon Boat Festival in Port Perry.
Every month something new and exciting comes our way for
us to snap.
We hope your summer has been as entertaining as our’s has
been, and continues to be so in the coming month.
As we travel throughout the community, we see how every-
one has grown and become more connected as a family. We
have witnessed people helping others in need by donating
money, their time, or by fundraising. As we move forward,
we at snapd Clarington hope to see more of that, and will be
there to photograph it!
As July gears down, our photographers will be thrilled
to cover the annual Boots & Hearts Music Festival at the
Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, 3233 Concession Road 10, in
Bowmanville. Thousands will flock to this multi-day country
music festival. Toby Keith, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Paul
Brandt, Lee Brice, Hunter Hayes and a long list of other
country music artists will rock the town away! Don’t miss it.
Boots & Hearts will showcase their country music lineup from
Thursday, July 31 to Sunday, August 3.
In addition to the music, Boots & Hearts teamed up with
various organizations to help make a difference in our com-
munity. The Boots and Hearts Water for Life Campaign helps
bring safe drinking water to ones in need around the world.
For a $2 donation, you can fill up your water bottle at one of
the Water for Life Stations on the grounds. For a $5 donation,
you can receive your own bottle that you can refill for free all
weekend long. Please don’t forget to stop by the MusiCount
booth to donate, too! Proceeds will support music education
in schools around Ontario and Canada.
During August, you can expect to see our photographers going
from one event to the next. So look around to see a friendly
face, and a snap media pass around someone’s neck.

With It Racing Team, held a Performance Driving Experience for
those who have triumphed over adversity of the mind and body.
All sight and mobility-challenged recipients received half-day
driving sessions in performance retrofitted sport cars, and an
one-on-one driving experience with a professional driv-
ing instructor at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park,
in Bowmanville. The annual event is for Ontario
residents living with acquired brain injuries, spinal
cord injuries, neurological disorders, and visual
impairments.

THE BARD’S BUS TOUR
In its 20th season, the 2014 Bard’s Bus Tour got underway officially making its usual stop
to the Visual Arts Centre Clarington, one of Driftwood’s first venue. Driftwood Theatre pre-
sented Shakespeare’s masterpiece, The Tempest. One of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays,
pits one man’s need for personal vengeance against his hopes for the future of his family. It
is a story of magic, power and forgiveness told in Driftwood’s signature style blending move-
ment, song, puppetry and classic storytelling. It was another perfect warm summer evening
which attracted people of all ages to this fine performance by a mix of upcoming young, tal-

With so many families moving East to the Clarington area and beyond, the number of visits to Lakeridge
Health Bowmanville Emergency Room is steadily increasing. The need for a dedicated Play Area for
children was essential. So, it was no surprise that when Steve Wilson, Owner/Operation of McDonald’s
Restaurants, learned about the
need, he jumped at the chance
to help. With funds raised
through McHappy Day and other
contributions, Mr. Wilson donat-
ed more than $85,000 for the
new Play Area. “We are so very
thankful to Mr. Wilson and the

SUMMER READING CLUB: PLANT A GARDEN

grows in it! This month children
learned about native plants,
and were taught how to plant
their own garden at the Summer
Reading Club Plant a Garden
workshop. Children took home
some native perennial flowers to
watch them grow. People of all
ages can enjoy gardening, but
children in particular will have
lots of fun and gain special ben-
efits. The children are the future
of our horticulture society and
it is our job to inspire them to
carry on our love of gardening.

Staff at the Fire Hall Bistro celebrated their first
anniversary by offering a complimentary tasting to
customers in the afternoon, and 15% off all menu items
at this quaint restaurant, located on Main St in Orono.
Generous portions of delicious pulled pork hamburgers,
caesar wraps, beet salad, rice balls and smoked salmon
were just a few of the items offered and prepared by
Restauranteur Valerine Lacroix. While Valerine was pre-
paring food in the kitchen, her daughter Victoria was
busy serving the many customers, whom all enjoyed
the food, service and casual atmosphere of the restau-
rant. The Fire Hall Bistro is licensed and offers a wide

ECLIPSE PERFORMING ARTS

Dancers from The Eclipse Performing Arts
showcased their year end show on June 14,
held at Clarington Central Secondary School.
Competitive and recreational dancers pre-
sented some of their numbers that they had
prepared throughout the year. The afternoon
was also graced with some fantastic musi-
cal numbers and dancers were excited to
have the opportunity to show off their skills.
Eclipse Performing Arts is a non-profit group
dedicated to keeping today’s youth active
in a fun and exciting environment. Their
classes incorporate baton twirling, dance and
gymnastics with pom pom and classes are
taught by qualified instructors boasting years
of experience.

CLARINGTON TERRY FOX RUN TEAM
APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
On June 25, the Clarington Terry Fox Run Committee
hosted the 15th annual luncheon to honour the team
captains and Top 10 fundraising teams that partici-
pated in 2013 run day in September. Certificates were
presented to those teams after the luncheon. Yusuf
Hirji, the guest speaker, discussed how he survived
cancer when he was diagnosed at 16-years-old. Hirji
suffered from the same cancer, Osteosarcoma, that
killed Terry Fox in 1981. Osteosarcoma is the most
common type of bone cancer. It is one of the few
cancers that begin in the bone and will sometimes
spread to other parts of the body.

YARD SALE FOR THE CURE
The Yard Sale for the Cure was a perfect place for bar-
gain hunters looking for great finds around Clarington.
Hundred’s of items were marked down at great prices.
Residents had the extra satisfaction of knowing the
money spent on those items went to help fight breast
cancer. The sense of community was wonderful and
inspiring. Residents had the option of purchasing gift-
ware, household, books, toys and other items. All pro-
ceeds helped fund breast cancer research, awareness

Trinity United Church hosted a yard sale and bake
sale in July to help support the church. People

12TH ANNUAL DOG DAYS OF SCUGOG
More than 2,000 dogs and their families had
a fun-filled weekend at the 12th Anuual Dog
Day of Scugog, which was held at the Scugog
Shores Museum Village. This annual week-
end long bash aims to promote the proper
training and care of dogs, and to celebrate
the joys of sharing our lives with our canine
friends. A highlight for everyone was the
Ontario Dock Dogs, where man’s best friends
wowed onlookers by showing off their fantas-
tic jumping skills. WoofJocks Canine All Stars,
Scugog Disc Dog, and Sporting Detection
Dogs all participated in making this a ‘dog
gone’ great day!

KYLIE’S LEMONAID STAND
Kylie’s held her 3rd annual LemonAid Stand this past July.
This year she chose to give back to SickKids Hospital. All the
funds she raised were used to purchase toys for the SickKids
Hospital’s Treasure Box program that helps children who have
gone through traumatic and difficult medical procedures. In
addition to scrumptious lemonade, Rainbow Loom bracelets
and baked goods were also available to purchase. This year,
Kylie raised more $500 for the Treasure Box! At Mastermind
Toys in Oshawa, Kylie purchased over $600 worth of toys for
the children, with help from the store discounting all items.
Kylie won the TVOKIDS’ Super Citizen Award, which celebrates
young achievers from ages six to 14 who make a difference in
their community and world.

WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL
The Newcastle Marina celebrated their
20th annual Wooden Boat Festival in
July. A flotilla of beautiful wooden boats
descended on the piers. There were
prizes, games and a Scooby Doo bouncy
castle for the kids. Adults enjoyed the
many vendors, and a patio beer garden,
with continuous music throughout the
event. As well as the magnificent boats,
the Re/Max folks had their air balloon
available for rides, with proceeds going
to the East Clarington Food Bank.

CUDDLE QUILT SALE
Every year in support of Sick Kids Hospitals Hearth Place Children’s Programs, the Cuddle Quilt Club
gathers their assorted quilts, place mats, pillowcases and many more items they have made to sell off.
Quilts are frequently made to commemorate major life events. Creativity can be expressed in block designs,
or simple “utility quilts”, with minimal decorative value could be produced as well. This year’s volunteers are
doing a beautiful job & all of the proceeds will go to local childrens programs.

There was no better way to kick-start the summer
then checking out Wilmot Creek Community 147th
Canada Day Celebration! The day started out with
a parade winding through the community to the
Wheelhouse Community Hall. Residents waved
red and white flags of all sizes and designs to
show their patriotism and Canadian spirit along
the parade route. The engaging and patriotic
afternoon was highlighted by some great food,
live entertainment and decorated golf carts. It
was a perfect day to be thankful we live in such a
great country.

CANADA DAY
Bowmanville residents celebrated Canada’s
147th birthday in style at the the Clarington
museum! Various activities took place through-
out the day, including live music on the verandah
by Friendly Fire, face painting, heritage crafts,
historic tours, horse and wage rides through
historic Bowmanville by Bob, Slick and Slim, a
BBQ lunch, and to top the day off, a scrumptious
birthday cake for all. The Four Winds Montessori
Choir sung the National Anthem. Clarington’s
Mayor Adrian Foster and various councillors and

CANADA DAY AT THE NEWCASTLE
RECREATION COMPLEX
Happy Birthday, Canada! The Newcastle and District
Recreation Complex hosted a family-friendly Canada
Day for the residents, from 2 pm to 11 pm. Kids swam for
free on the hot, but beautiful day. Animals On The Go
was also in attendance. Tara Watchorn, gold medalist,
Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team and Newcastle
resident, signed autographs and had photo sessions with
the young and old. Residents were encouraged to dress
in red and white for the aerial photo shoot, done by a
plane flying overhead. Families rocked out to the music
provided by Pirate Radio all day and night. In addition,
everyone enjoyed BBQ and refreshments, provided by the
Newcastle Lions. Hanc’s Fries truck and Kirby Ice Cream
truck also attended the event.

On July 1, Newcastle residents celebrated Canada
Day with a bang. Carlton Plummer and his wife
Sheri hosted a Canada Day street party in the Port
of Newcastle. Families and friends enjoyed various
events such as a giant waterslide, jumping castle,
face painting, a balloonist clown, arts and crafts,
and a temporary tattoo station. Also, Tara Watchorn,
2014 Olympic Gold Medalist with the Canadian
Women’s Hockey Team, accepted an Appreciation
and Recognition award. In addition, Sacha Visagie, a
local and up-and-coming singer, rocked the day away.
During the evening, families also enjoyed a fire-
works display co-ordinated to music, overlooking
Lake Ontario.

Eight Clarington high school students are one step closer to reach-
ing their goals due to the generous donations by the Rotary Club of
Bowmanville. The annual bursary presentation awarded money to eight
special students at a breakfast with parents and friends on July 8th, at
the Trinity United Church. Three students in the arts, music and
science were also honoured. The Rotary Club of Bowmanville
funds several students’ bursaries, exchange programs, and
is affiliated with several youth Rotaract clubs. They do
great work in the community and help far more than we

On behalf of the Tyrone Community Centre Hall Board, residents
from across Clarington travelled to Tyrone last July to the Neil
Newton Photo Hop. Visitors had the opportunity to view digitally
reprinted images of the brilliant series of portraits document-
ing rural life in the Tyrone, Enniskillen, Haydon, Hampton ad
Blackstock areas of the 1970s. Enjoying some delicious goodies at
Tyrone Mills Limited, many visitors then walked over to the Tyrone
Community Centre to check out the Silver Gelatin Print collection
of original Newtons’ prints. Families, friends, neighbours, and most
astoundingly some of the same characters who were captured
in these historically prints, caught up and reminisced about the
times gone by. The prints perfectly captured the characters and
life in the area at that time.

MOBIL 1 SPORTSCARS GRAND PRIX
A thrilling experience for all who attended the Mobil
1 SportsCar Grand Prix weekend, presented by Hawk
Performance at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park! There
was plenty of open space to watch these beautiful
machines whiz by, driven with such skill to maneuver
this fast track at incredibly high speeds. The view from
the finish line area is a place where the audience could
see the crew stations setup and see the changing of
drivers, gas fill up, and tire changes. Did you know it
takes approximately 30 to 35 seconds to refuel, change
drivers, and 20 seconds to change tires? Those brave
enough to watch near the fence line heard an unforget-
table noise of cars racing by, which you can’t compare
to what you watch on the television. This sound is no
doubt music to the ears of the race car families and
fans! Great entertainment for all who attended, and we
are fortunate to have this facility in our neighbourhood.

ALIEN ADVENTURE
Anyone up for a Martian adventure?
Parents and children took a trip out
to outer space on June 7, at the
Bowmanville Library! They listened
to stories of aliens, outer space, and
robots. Children showed off their
artistic talent by drawing their own
alien designs. And, they also enjoyed
taking part in scientific experiments.

RELAY FOR LIFE CLARINGTON
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life, held at
Clarington Central Secondary School last June, was more
than just a fundraiser. It was an opportunity to get together
with family and friends to celebrate cancer survivors, remem-
ber loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of
finding a cure. These local teams got together for a fulfilling
night of fun, and their participation gives strength to the
Canadian Cancer Society’s mission to eradicate cancer. The
customary survivors first lap, as always, was inspirational
and emotional for both the survivors, and the participants in
this 12-hour overnight event. snapd congratulates everyone
who was there for being part of the biggest cancer event,
helping to make the biggest difference! Relay For Life 2014
in Clarington raised $52,822.29 for the Canadian Cancer
Society. In 2013, 16,224 teams raised $46.5M across Canada.

18TH ANNUAL POW WOW
Grass Dance is one of the oldest dances
still used in Pow Wow today. The dancers
imitate grass swaying in the wind.
The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation held its 18th traditional Pow Wow last July. The two-day
event welcomed the general public to experience and appreciate the traditions of the Mississaugas
of Scugog Island First Nation. This year’s Pow Wow honoured the 250th year of The Niagara Treaty.
The ancestor and elders were key in establishing the Crown and First Nations relationship for what
we know as ‘Canada’. Hundreds of people attended the Pow Wow of First Nations people as they met,
danced, sang, socialized and honoured the First Nations culture. Many vendors were on hand, selling
food and souvenirs. It was certainly a colourful weekend of education and entertainment. For more

tunes of local bands at the Rotary Park
on Queen Street, in Bowmanville. The
free Concerts in the Park begins at 7
pm to 9 pm. On July 10, Little Peter and
the Elegants played 50s and 60s music
for the residents. Coffee and snacks
were available for purchase. Residents
are always encouraged to bring lawn
chairs and blankets for themselves,
families and friends.

How do birds fly? Where do they live? The Home Depot’s Kids Workshops
of Bowmanville dropped by the Clarington Public Library at the
Newcastle Branch to offer a useful project creation where chil-
dren built a home for a feathered friend. The workshops taught
children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same
time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally,
this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults
and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit,
each child received a kid-sized orange apron, similar to
The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement
pin. With the first month of summer break has gone by
so fast, children are used to being stimulated all day
at school, and Clarington Public Library has filled
that void this summer with various ongoing activi-

On June 9, the seniors baseball team, Wilmot Creek Lakers hosted the Oshawa Buicks in a regular
season game at Wilmot Fields. The Wilmot Creek Lakers just simply cannot outgrow their love of the
game. These are the baseball players who have lived and breathed for that next game, and are truly
winners. Wives and friends came out to support the team. Everyone in attendance had a great time.

Parents and children took part in the Shake, Rattle and Roll, a new program offered at the Bowmanville
Library, on July 4. This program explores music and how it affects children’s brain development in
areas of memory, spatial reasoning, problem solving, and pattern recognition. Presented in partner-
ship with the Bowmanville YMCA Ontario Early Years Centre.

A huge crowd showed up to the new Shake, Rattle
and Roll program at the Bowmanville Library!

Students from the ages of 11 to 15 participated in a special one-day babysit-
ting course at the Clarington Public Library last month. Students learned
how to care for infants, toddlers and older children, what questions to
ask parents, and what to do in emergencies. Grace Kingston, a Red Cross
certified presenter, partnering with React Right Safety Services, taught
students the fundamental skills needed to start a babysitting service,
and prepared them how to handle many of the different situations
that might arise with their jobs. Upon completion, students received a
babysitter certificate. And with babysitters very much in demand,
students will have lots of opportunities for part-time work.

TENNIS CAMP
Many of the children would like for this camp to run all summer long
Every year, the Bowmanville Junior Tennis Camp encourages children to become interested in the
sport of tennis by offering a friendly camp based environment. “Tennis is a sport that you can use
your whole life,” said Ellen Logan, event co-ordinator. This local, non-profit event, was held from July
7 to July 11. Children, ages eight through ten, played on the courts in the morning, and the 11 and
14-year-old’s played in the afternoon. The Tennis Camp was a great success this year as 24 children
attended the week long event.

10TH ANNUAL ‘DRAGON FLIES’
DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Great Job to everyone!
The 10th annual Dragon Flies Boat festival had another
successful run this year. But that couldn’t have happened
if not for the support of 1,400 enthusiastic paddlers, more
than 100 volunteers, and numerous visitors at Palmer
Park, in Port Perry. It was a great opportunity for team
building, cooperation and fundraising in a great outdoor
setting. Funds raised will go towards increasing breast
cancer awareness, providing support programs for breast
cancer survivors, and assisting in diagnosis and treatment
of breast cancer in the local municipalities of Durham
Region and Kawartha Lakes. Congratulation to the efforts
of The Dragon Flies for ‘slaying the dragons’ in the fight
against breast cancer.

GANGWAY TO GALILEE - VBS
From Monday, July 7 to Friday, July
11, the Bowmanville Baptist Church
held the Gangway to Galilee, a
vacation bible school, for children
from four to 13-years-old. The
young ones made new friends, had
fun and learned from inspired lead-
ers. Games, crafts, stories, snacks
and water activities were the ingre-
dients for a successful week of fun.
On the closing day, patrons enjoyed
a delicious BBQ lunch.

The Bowmanville Newcastle Baseball Association (BNBA)
were proud to host their Bantam Classic Select Tournament,
held at the Clarington Fields. snapd was on hand for the
final game between the Clarington Colts and the Prince
Edward County Linx. The Bantam teams duked it out over
two games, and the Clarington Colts were crowned as
this year’s champion. The BNBA offers 3 levels of
baseball programs, from recreational ball at the
House League level, a higher calibre at the
Select level, to competitive teams at the Rep
level, for males and females from ages

The longest consecutively running rodeo in the province,
the Case IH Ultimate Rodeo made a stop on their 2014
tour recently into Orono. The Orono Agricultural
Society presented an action packed western rodeo,
featuring the most exciting rodeo events as seen
on TV, or at the Calgary Stampede. The weekend
was at capacity as fans filled the Orono Fairgrounds
to catch the action that included barrel racing, bare-
back and saddle bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, steer
wrestling, tie down roping, junior barrel racing, and the
world’s most dangerous sport, bull riding, and junior
bull riding! The Case IH Ultimate Rodeo is recog-
nized as one of Ontario’s top community events.

4-H is a program that engages
urban and rural children in agri-
culture, food, animal care, environ-
ment and much more. In June,
children showed off their artistic
abilities by sculpting metal art cre-
ations. Tin cans, metal strainers,
nuts, bolts, bottle caps and other
metal objects were transformed
into animals, tractors, cars and a
host of other creative designs.

After being inspired by the ‘Little Couple’, Jennifer, a 5-year-old girl, decided to donate her hair to
cancer patients. A teacher at her school heard of Jennifer’s plans. She suggested Jennifer to cut her
hair in class to spark interest with the other children. A hairdresser agreed to come in to cut the little
girl’s hair for free during school hours. Jennifer and her mother hope that this event will inspire other
people in the community to do the same.
