Experience Osterville 2014 Guide - Osterville Cape Cod

Armstrong-Kelley Park is the largest private park open to the public on Cape Cod. It is located in Osterville across from Fancy's Market. The land was donated in 1930 by two sisters to the Cape Cod Horticultural Society. The park features rare trees, theme gardens, walking trails, and fairy houses. It is maintained by volunteers and hosts community events. A new addition called "Buddy's Place" was created for dogs and their owners.

2 Welcome to Experience Osterville 2014! This is our second annual guide, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the response to last year’s debut – thanks to our advertisers and our readers. From our initial distribution to the Barnstable Patriot’s readers last May, the guide flew off the shelves of the library and our local village and Barnstable businesses throughout the season. We loved having folks call us and ask for copies to give to their wedding guests, and hearing from businesses like the Wianno Green Cafe that they needed more books because they had run out – again! Our digital version at ExperienceOsterville.com gained momentum throughout the season as well, creating additional exposure for our advertisers by reaching our cyber-savvy readers. This year’s edition includes a “Happy 100th Anniversary” to the venerable Wianno Senior, designed by Horace Manley Crosby in 1913-14 for a group of sailors from the Wianno Yacht Club. 5 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE Osterville’s Wianno Senior: A Century of Sailing Happy Birthday Wianno Senior! The beloved Osterville native is 100 years old and still going strong, gracefully plying the waters of Nantucket Sound, skimming the shallow current, averting shoals, harnessing the fickle winds, and asserting her place in the hearts of sailors who have, for generations, built the foundation of family and friendship upon her full keel. For this 25-foot gaff-rigged, keel-centerboard sloop has been a mainstay on these waters since Horace Manley Crosby fulfilled his commission from members of the Wianno Yacht Club to design and build a wooden boat for racing in the Sound. The result, in the summer of 1914, were the fourteen original, whose graceful overhanging sterns and gently curved bows provided the perfect combination of speed and functionality for day racing. Since then the boat has enjoyed a storied history, bolstered, in great part, by its role in the political fabric of America. President John F. Kennedy’s ownership of the Victura, customarily referred to as Hull #94, garnered the design a place in the collective heart of America as he sailed this boat during youth, as well as the Camelot years. 6 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE But it was not just Jack Kennedy who prized the design. Generations of sailors – those from the Wianno, Hyannis, Hyannis Port, Stone Horse and Bass River Yacht Clubs – have been raised racing this boat for decades. And it is the tradition of sailing summer after summer with friends and family, and the memories created therein, that earned this sloop the reputation of being the perfect boat that marks a place – the south side of Cape Cod. For many, Cape Cod and the Senior are deeply intertwined. Tim Fulham, owner of hull #142, recalls that the first time he sailed on a Wianno Senior he was but nine years old. “My family purchased a Wianno Senior in 1968 and I have been sailing them every summer since (except for a ten-year hiatus in the 1990s). It is a remarkably sea-going boat; it feels wonderful, secure, and capable under foot in all conditions...Under sail, it is wonderfully balanced and a delight to sail.” Wianno owner Dave Trimble has owned a Senior for nearly 15 years, losing his first, #109, in the devastating five-alarm fire that occurred at Crosby Yacht Yard on December 10, 2003 in which 21 Seniors were lost. He loved the boat so well that he bought another, #193, which was the first new boat that was launched after the fire in February 2004. The boats, he says, are unique and wonderful. “They are the older, classic gaff-rigged design that’s very pleasing to look at. The boats are fun to sail, and a challenge to sail fast. They’re designed for the choppy waters and blustery winds of Nantucket Sound. 7 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Stewart Roach is Fleet Captain of the Wianno Senior Fleet, and a member of the Wianno Yacht Club. He speaks lovingly of the boat he has sailed for 38 years, recalling its history, relishing his own personal memories. “Every spring, Crosby Yacht would deliver the Seniors to their owners, freshly varnished and painted. I still remember the smell of the wood mahogany cabin as I slid the deck hatch forward as a young sailor. Truly, you could smell the history of the boat.” He notes that sailing the Senior was a rite of passage of sorts for a young sailor. “It was every young sailor’s dream to be asked to crew in a race which usually occurred only when someone who regularly crewed could not make it. Because it is gaff-rigged, the Senior is a lot like a big Beetle Cat, except that it has a jib and a spinnaker. So, it was a natural for anyone who sailed on the Cape to make the transition to the Senior.” The original design was completely wooden, but during the 1980s a meticulously methodical process was initiated to transition the boats to fiberglass hulls. “To this day,” notes Roach, “the mast, boom and gaff of the Senior all still are made of wood. The hulls are now made of glass, although some wood boats still compete competitively in local racing.” The love of a sailor for his boat can be poetic in scope, and Roach’s praise for the Senior is a paean to the beauty and grace of fine, traditional craftsmanship, as well as the stirring power and beauty of nature. cont’d The Wianno Senior Centennial Anniversary will be celebrated throughout the summer, with events large and small. 8 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE “By far, my most favorite moment of Senior Sailing is the sail in after a day’s racing,” he says. “Usually the boats finish the race fairly close together, and as we approach the cut entrance of Osterville the boats always seem to merge at the same time on a slow run back into the West Bay. I love to hear the chatter and the banter that echoes under the blanketed sails amongst the skippers and crews and the laughter that transpires after a day of racing. To be in the warm waters of Nantucket Sound and sail such beautiful boats for the last 38 years has honestly been such a treat, and one that I hope continues. It may come as a great surprise to many folks that the largest, private Park open to the public on Cape Cod is Armstrong-Kelley Park right here in Osterville. This hidden jewel is situated directly across from Fancy’s Market on Main Street. The land was given to the Cape Cod Horticultural Society (CCHS) in 1930, two years after its founding in 1928. The benefactors were two sisters, Mrs. Templeton Kelley and Mrs. Andrew McClarey, who donated the parcel of land near their estate, Bandeley Manor, which was located nearby on Main Street. The CCHS is a non-profit organization that relies on our many donors, endowers, corporate sponsors and, most of all, our members who have kept the garden alive for over eighty years. Our vision for the Park is grounded in a Master Plan commissioned in 1991 and the plantings were completed some time ago. Today the Park boasts dozens of rare and ornamental trees, theme gardens, Liam’s View & Train, water features, holly dell, boardwalks, hillside walking trails, a whimsical fairy house forest, and various benches and monuments remembering local residents and loved ones. The park has hosted public and private celebrations including weddings, Memorial Day remembrances and earnest young children planting daffodils in the spring. But our volunteers are among our greatest assets, and are the small band of gardeners (usually five to six volunteers), who work weekly on maintenance tasks. The “gorgis gals” (sic) and “grumpy old men” are familiar with the park’s beauty and the work it takes to keep it pristine. Most are 60+, and many in their 70s, 80s, and 90s! cont’d Armstrong-Kelley Park: where memories bloom forever In addition to the natural beauty, you can enjoy strolling the boardwalks constructed of more than 1,300 boards. They commemorate births, deaths, marriages, and everything/everyone else you can imagine. It’s a happy problem that interest has been so strong that we recently completed the section called the Woodland Walkway. Buddy’s Place: for our 4-legged friends The CCHS is excited about the newest phase of our boardwalk project, which, as it turns out was “right in front of our nose.” The Park is home to happy dogs; we see them daily, trotting along the many hillside trails, lying patiently under a picnic table while their owners have lunch, chasing squirrels, or taking a drink at Joy’s fountain. What better place to remember them than here? And why just dogs? Any beloved pet can be memorialized in our new pet memorial and boardwalk area, Buddy’s Place, located off the green. Construction began in August, 2013, with excavation services donated by Carl Mueller, President of Paramount Landscaping. The area is like a “baseball diamond” composed of four walkways representing the base paths. A fenced memorial pet stone area will be sited at the center of the “infield” featuring a donated sundial and a “pitcher’s mound.” A statuette of “Buddy” will oversee the area from his doghouse – the dugout! 13 ARMSTRONG-KELLEYPARK www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org
Buddy’s Place will hold 350 boards and about 200 pet stones. The engraved memorial stones are 6-8 inches across and are made of natural river rocks which can be customized with over 350 different pet images. Your donation of $100 for a board or a pet memorial stone will help to support the continued operation of the Park. So welcome, Everyone. The Park is yours. Seize the day and bring the toddler who’s learning to walk or your puppy who needs to run off some energy; hike the trails, have lunch at our picnic tables, or ring the bell at Liam’s Train. Osterville’s Flower: A Portrait of Pansy Kalas Many remember going to the “Penny Candy Store” or “Charlie’s” as you enter the village, but for Pansy Kalas, it was home. Located just across from the flagpole, the red building with the country store charm now houses Vintage Flowers. Built by Charles Crosby in 1890, the Kalas family operated the Kalas’ Fruit Store beginning in 1915, when James Kalas purchased the property. Kalas had three children – Georgia, Charles, and Pansy. The family operated the store until 2000. Having lived for decades in the family’s apartment at the store until it was sold, Patsy Kalas had a bird’s eye view of life in the village, and a lifetime of Osterville memories she gladly shares. Reflecting on her Greek heritage, she remembers picking grape leaves in Osterville as a young girl. Both of her parents came to the United States when they were children. She remembers going to church faithfully, and the advent of paved roads through the village. It took a horse and a pulley system to move the Kalas’ Fruit Store back 40 feet to widen and pave the road in the 1920s. Pansy says that it took weeks to accomplish the task, and the family lived in and operated the store during the moving process. Likewise, the advent of greater access to automobiles and the availability of delivery trucks changed life in the village. Pansy’s father sold the horse and wagons that he had been using to make way for trucks. Pansy recalls one day, out of the blue, a working horse broke free in the village and came right up to the window of the store. The horse gently bowed his head as Pansy’s father approached the window. “That was the only time that I saw my father cry,” recalls Pansy. He recognized the horse as the one he had sold months before. During WWII, she dutifully raised and lowered the village flag every day and served as air raid warden. 16 PANSYKALAS Charlie’s Penny Candy Store, circa the 1920s. When the war ended, she rang the bell at the Methodist Church. She has many happy childhood memories of playing with her brother and sister in the open fields on Bay Street and at the beaches. To this day, she remains very proud of Osterville – her home. On July 26, 2013, Kathleen Capo, president of the board of the Osterville Historical Museum, presented Pansy Kalas with the Blount Cane. Open to non-members as well as members, the Club offers Sailing Programs for juniors and adults. Locals and visitors alike sail and fleet-race Wianno Seniors, Vanguard V-15s, Doughdishes/Haven 12.5’s, Crosby Fast Cats, 420s, and Optimists. The Junior Sailing Program is dedicated to teaching kids seamanship, sportsmanship and sailing skills in a fun and encouraging environment. Kids can enjoy lessons with wonderful instructors, many of whom have come up through the program themselves. Under the supervision of these experienced instructors, this program inspires youngsters and their families to delight in sailing with an emphasis on fun and safety. Beginner sailors can either start in Cosby Fast Cats or a dingy boat called an Optimist or Opti, single sailor boats that are similar to small bathtubs. As the kids grow and get stronger they move on to Club 420s, two-person boats used in competitive high school and college sailing. 26 IN&ONTHEWATER STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. SUP can be done on any body of water, from high surf to flat water. It’s easy to learn and great exercise. According to Wikipedia, the modern sport of SUP originates from the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand up on their long boards and paddle out to take pictures of tourists learning to surf, and to get a better view of the incoming surf. Cape Cod, and Osterville in particular, is a perfect place for SUP because there are a variety of bodies of water to be explored, says Amy Hotchkiss, owner of Stand Up and Paddle Cape Cod. SUP Cape Cod will take you to rivers, to lakes and ponds, to Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay. “Stand Up Paddle boarding is very easy to learn. It is a time where one can explore and enjoy nature. It is great to see a family with three generations come SUPing and they all have a BLAST!” says Amy. There are several popular SUP events held each year: • Paddle for the Bays: Family Paddle Day. SWIMMING Osterville has some of the most beautiful beaches on the Cape. Located on a peninsula formed by the harbor, the East Bay inlet and the bay itself, Dowses Beach offers options for beach going experiences. If it’s too windy or rough on the ocean side, beachgoers – particularly families with children – can splash around on the protected bay side. This semi-public beach offers free parking to residents who obtain a beach permit. Lifeguards are on duty daily in the summer; showers, restrooms and concessions are offered in the beach house. Swimming lessons are available for grades 1-8 thru the Town of Barnstable. Those seeking a fresh or flat-water beach should visit Joshua’s Pond. The beach is a stretch of sand that fringes a grassy park with mature trees. Also an ideal spot for picnics, the pond features a nearly level beach that has a gradual slope. Families with small children will find this unguarded beach to be a place where their kids can splash around in relative safety. Restrooms are available; a resident parking permit is required. Sampson’s Island is an uninhabited, undeveloped beach island of 15 acres in Barnstable. A favorite of residents of Osterville, many people stay for the day and dine on the beach as well. Peak times such as weekends and holidays, the island is packed with families and offers great viewing of boats as they navigate the narrows. The island is only accessible by private boat, but is used by many people for beach recreation and as a kayaking destination. 28 IN&ONTHEWATER

31 PICTURINGOSTERVILLE www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Picture perfect is an apt description of Osterville, which blends the best of quaint villages scenes and majestic water vistas. Osterville-born photographer David Hansen has a keen eye for what makes this special place so visually appealing. After all, he’s been taking beautiful photographs here for decades. While he started out as an amateur, his work was so well received that he built a thriving professional studio in the village center, where he is now joined by two of his daughters, Katie and Amy. His business focuses on weddings, engagements, senior pictures, and portraits of families in all shapes and sizes. What they all have in common, though, is that they are firmly anchored in this picture-perfect place. “Osterville offers many beautiful picture opportunities, from the quaint downtown area to the gardens and woodlands of Armstrong-Kelley Park, to the many beaches, coves and marinas,” Hansen notes. The most important element in taking great pictures, he says, is the lighting, and Osterville in the early mornings and dusky evenings provides just the right amount of softness to caress subjects. “Family portraits are usually taken at the beach or at a client’s home,” he says. “Dowses Beach is our first choice because it offers such a wide variety of backgrounds – Nantucket Sound on one side, East Bay on another side and the channel and jetty on another side. Beach roses and grass add to the Cape Cod setting. We are always looking for flattering, soft light.” If you’re looking for beautiful vistas, “Landscape photography, too, is best done in the very early morning, or around sunset,“ Hansen comments. “I often see people photographing the sunset over East Bay at Dowses Beach, and this spot is great for that, but I think the best scene is often looking over Nantucket Sound, away from the sunset. 38 MATTHEWSCHULZ Osterville native, painter, and gallery owner Matthew Schulz is clear when he notes that he didn’t choose to become an artist. “It chose me,” he says. “Drawing can be taught,” he adds. “Understanding color mixes can be taught and certain compositions can be repeated. But the actual artistry and creation comes from within; and that cannot be taught, it can only be cultivated.” It is that fundamental pull towards color, light, shape and composition that comes from within him, and which fuels his life’s work. He says he’s been painting since he was in the seventh grade, but was formally taught at the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts, concentrating in painting. While his work defies strict categorization he says, “It definitely falls into the genre of Realism; beyond that I would say my work is a mix of Tonalism, Abstraction, and exacting Realism. Realism is just recognizable abstraction.” His paintings are typically large in size. This, he says, is a direct result of his vision, literally his vision. “I am extremely nearsighted, but not metaphorically. Objects go out of focus at four inches from my eyes. As a child I thought of it as flaw, a weakness, but now I have come to understand it as one of my great strengths. Unlike most artists I do not have to squint my eyes for color agreement or spatial understanding. His nearsightedness shapes his choice to paint large works that have become a hallmark of his style. “I paint with my glasses on, which narrows my field of view, thus objects appear smaller. For example, working on a 40"x60" painting wasn’t overwhelming because it did not look large. A 12"x16" format is about as small as I’m comfortable working.” His paintings primarily depict landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, and sporting scenes. His great love of the outdoors was fostered during his youth in the marshes, woods, and waterways of Cape Cod and Maine. His works have been part of solo and juried group exhibitions, including at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Copley Society in Boston, the Mystic Maritime Gallery in Connecticut, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wisconsin, and at the Cape Cod Museum of Fine Art in Dennis. “Most of my work is held in private collections,” he notes. “Although ‘Evening Amber’ is part of the permanent collection at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, generously donated in 2010 by Christopher Samuel Hyland in honor of his mother Patricia.” He is also proud to note that he is slated to create the 2014 Pops by the Sea program cover painting. His influences range from 19th century painters such as Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt to contemporaries such as Robert Bateman, Joseph P. McGurl, and Paco Young. He is especially grateful for the friendship and encouragement of art patron, his dear friend, the recently deceased Carolyn Crossett Rowland, who was also a great supporter of the Osterville Village Library. “ Our friendship was born out of mutual respect and love of all things beautiful. Osterville Village Library By the Numbers Two years ago this past March, the Osterville Village Library celebrated the opening of our beautiful new facility. It truly took a village to make the dream of a world-class, modern facility that could offer residents and visitors of all ages the best a library can offer and more. As we passed our 2-year milestone, it was rewarding to look back at how far we’ve come in just two short years. It’s the place to hang out We love that we’ve become the place for young and old alike to meet, socialize, explore and work. For example: a group of avid Bridge players enjoy an afternoon of competition and camaraderie; folks enjoy the fire on a cold day and catch up on the Wall Street Journal; a grandmother watches her grandkids explore the children’s room; budding architects build amazing things out of Legos™ ; a college s tudent watches an online calculus lecture on one of our iMacs; a woman researches her family tree with the help of one of our librarians; friends who wandered in browse the latest hard-cover novels; a retired couple learn how to download books to their e-readers. And then there are the art exhibits and the meetings, lectures, movie nights and other activities in our community space upstairs. It’s all been an exciting first chapter at the new OVL. Adding it all up In addition to experiencing the energy of our new facility, it’s rewarding to look at the data.     2 Welcome to ExperienceOsterville 2014! This is our second annual guide, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the response to last year’s debut – thanks to our advertisers and our readers. From our initial distribution to the Barnstable Patriot’s readers last May, the guide flew off the shelves of the library and our local village and Barnstable businesses throughout the season. We loved having folks call us and ask for copies to give to their wedding guests, and hearing from businesses like the Wianno Green Cafe that they needed more books because they had run out – again!     5 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE Osterville’s Wianno Senior: ACentury of Sailing Happy Birthday Wianno Senior! The beloved Osterville native is 100 years old and still going strong, gracefully plying the waters of Nantucket Sound, skimming the shallow current, averting shoals, harnessing the fickle winds, and asserting her place in the hearts of sailors who have, for generations, built the foundation of family and friendship upon her full keel. For this 25-foot gaff-rigged, keel-centerboard sloop has been a mainstay on these waters since Horace Manley Crosby fulfilled his commission from members of the Wianno Yacht Club to design and build a wooden boat for racing in the Sound. The result, in the summer of 1914, were the fourteen original, whose graceful overhanging sterns and gently curved bows provided the perfect combination of speed and functionality for day racing. Since then the boat has enjoyed a storied history, bolstered, in great part, by its role in the political fabric of America. President John F. Kennedy’s ownership of the Victura, customarily referred to as Hull #94, garnered the design a place in the collective heart of America as he sailed this boat during youth, as well as the Camelot years.     6 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE But it wasnot just Jack Kennedy who prized the design. Generations of sailors – those from the Wianno, Hyannis, Hyannis Port, Stone Horse and Bass River Yacht Clubs – have been raised racing this boat for decades. And it is the tradition of sailing summer after summer with friends and family, and the memories created therein, that earned this sloop the reputation of being the perfect boat that marks a place – the south side of Cape Cod. For many, Cape Cod and the Senior are deeply intertwined. Tim Fulham, owner of hull #142, recalls that the first time he sailed on a Wianno Senior he was but nine years old. “My family purchased a Wianno Senior in 1968 and I have been sailing them every summer since (except for a ten-year hiatus in the 1990s). It is a remarkably sea-going boat; it feels wonderful, secure, and capable under foot in all conditions...Under sail, it is wonderfully balanced and a delight to sail.” Wianno owner Dave Trimble has owned a Senior for nearly 15 years, losing his first, #109, in the devastating five-alarm fire that occurred at Crosby Yacht Yard on December 10, 2003 in which 21 Seniors were lost. He loved the boat so well that he bought another, #193, which was the first new boat that was launched after the fire in February 2004. The boats, he says, are unique and wonderful. “They are the older, classic gaff-rigged design that’s very pleasing to look at. The boats are fun to sail, and a challenge to sail fast. They’re designed for the choppy waters and blustery winds of Nantucket Sound.     7 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Stewart Roach isFleet Captain of the Wianno Senior Fleet, and a member of the Wianno Yacht Club. He speaks lovingly of the boat he has sailed for 38 years, recalling its history, relishing his own personal memories. “Every spring, Crosby Yacht would deliver the Seniors to their owners, freshly varnished and painted. I still remember the smell of the wood mahogany cabin as I slid the deck hatch forward as a young sailor. Truly, you could smell the history of the boat.” He notes that sailing the Senior was a rite of passage of sorts for a young sailor. “It was every young sailor’s dream to be asked to crew in a race which usually occurred only when someone who regularly crewed could not make it. Because it is gaff-rigged, the Senior is a lot like a big Beetle Cat, except that it has a jib and a spinnaker. So, it was a natural for anyone who sailed on the Cape to make the transition to the Senior.” The original design was completely wooden, but during the 1980s a meticulously methodical process was initiated to transition the boats to fiberglass hulls. “To this day,” notes Roach, “the mast, boom and gaff of the Senior all still are made of wood. The hulls are now made of glass, although some wood boats still compete competitively in local racing.” The love of a sailor for his boat can be poetic in scope, and Roach’s praise for the Senior is a paean to the beauty and grace of fine, traditional craftsmanship, as well as the stirring power and beauty of nature. cont’d The Wianno Senior Centennial Anniversary will be celebrated throughout the summer, with events large and small.     8 WIANNOSENIORSALUTE “By far, mymost favorite moment of Senior Sailing is the sail in after a day’s racing,” he says. “Usually the boats finish the race fairly close together, and as we approach the cut entrance of Osterville the boats always seem to merge at the same time on a slow run back into the West Bay. I love to hear the chatter and the banter that echoes under the blanketed sails amongst the skippers and crews and the laughter that transpires after a day of racing. To be in the warm waters of Nantucket Sound and sail such beautiful boats for the last 38 years has honestly been such a treat, and one that I hope continues.     It may comeas a great surprise to many folks that the largest, private Park open to the public on Cape Cod is Armstrong-Kelley Park right here in Osterville. This hidden jewel is situated directly across from Fancy’s Market on Main Street. The land was given to the Cape Cod Horticultural Society (CCHS) in 1930, two years after its founding in 1928. The benefactors were two sisters, Mrs. Templeton Kelley and Mrs. Andrew McClarey, who donated the parcel of land near their estate, Bandeley Manor, which was located nearby on Main Street. The CCHS is a non-profit organization that relies on our many donors, endowers, corporate sponsors and, most of all, our members who have kept the garden alive for over eighty years. Our vision for the Park is grounded in a Master Plan commissioned in 1991 and the plantings were completed some time ago. Today the Park boasts dozens of rare and ornamental trees, theme gardens, Liam’s View & Train, water features, holly dell, boardwalks, hillside walking trails, a whimsical fairy house forest, and various benches and monuments remembering local residents and loved ones. The park has hosted public and private celebrations including weddings, Memorial Day remembrances and earnest young children planting daffodils in the spring. But our volunteers are among our greatest assets, and are the small band of gardeners (usually five to six volunteers), who work weekly on maintenance tasks. The “gorgis gals” (sic) and “grumpy old men” are familiar with the park’s beauty and the work it takes to keep it pristine. Most are 60+, and many in their 70s, 80s, and 90s! They commemorate births, deaths, marriages, and everything/everyone else you can imagine. It’s a happy problem that interest has been so strong that we recently completed the section called the Woodland Walkway. Buddy’s Place: for our 4-legged friends The CCHS is excited about the newest phase of our boardwalk project, which, as it turns out was “right in front of our nose.” The Park is home to happy dogs; we see them daily, trotting along the many hillside trails, lying patiently under a picnic table while their owners have lunch, chasing squirrels, or taking a drink at Joy’s fountain. What better place to remember them than here? And why just dogs? Any beloved pet can be memorialized in our new pet memorial and boardwalk area, Buddy’s Place, located off the green. Construction began in August, 2013, with excavation services donated by Carl Mueller, President of Paramount Landscaping. The area is like a “baseball diamond” composed of four walkways representing the base paths. A fenced memorial pet stone area will be sited at the center of the “infield” featuring a donated sundial and a “pitcher’s mound.” A statuette of “Buddy” will oversee the area from his doghouse – the dugout! 13 ARMSTRONG-KELLEYPARK www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org

    Osterville’s Flower: A Portraitof Pansy Kalas Many remember going to the “Penny Candy Store” or “Charlie’s” as you enter the village, but for Pansy Kalas, it was home. Located just across from the flagpole, the red building with the country store charm now houses Vintage Flowers. Built by Charles Crosby in 1890, the Kalas family operated the Kalas’ Fruit Store beginning in 1915, when James Kalas purchased the property. Kalas had three children – Georgia, Charles, and Pansy. The family operated the store until 2000. Having lived for decades in the family’s apartment at the store until it was sold, Patsy Kalas had a bird’s eye view of life in the village, and a lifetime of Osterville memories she gladly shares. Reflecting on her Greek heritage, she remembers picking grape leaves in Osterville as a young girl. Both of her parents came to the United States when they were children. She remembers going to church faithfully, and the advent of paved roads through the village. It took a horse and a pulley system to move the Kalas’ Fruit Store back 40 feet to widen and pave the road in the 1920s. Pansy says that it took weeks to accomplish the task, and the family lived in and operated the store during the moving process. Likewise, the advent of greater access to automobiles and the availability of delivery trucks changed life in the village. Pansy’s father sold the horse and wagons that he had been using to make way for trucks. Pansy recalls one day, out of the blue, a working horse broke free in the village and came right up to the window of the store. The horse gently bowed his head as Pansy’s father approached the window. “That was the only time that I saw my father cry,” recalls Pansy. He recognized the horse as the one he had sold months before. Open to non-members as well as members, the Club offers Sailing Programs for juniors and adults. Locals and visitors alike sail and fleet-race Wianno Seniors, Vanguard V-15s, Doughdishes/Haven 12.5’s, Crosby Fast Cats, 420s, and Optimists. The Junior Sailing Program is dedicated to teaching kids seamanship, sportsmanship and sailing skills in a fun and encouraging environment.     26 IN&ONTHEWATER STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. SUP can be done on any body of water, from high surf to flat water. It’s easy to learn and great exercise. According to Wikipedia, the modern sport of SUP originates from the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand up on their long boards and paddle out to take pictures of tourists learning to surf, and to get a better view of the incoming surf. Cape Cod, and Osterville in particular, is a perfect place for SUP because there are a variety of bodies of water to be explored, says Amy Hotchkiss, owner of Stand Up and Paddle Cape Cod. SUP Cape Cod will take you to rivers, to lakes and ponds, to Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay. “Stand Up Paddle boarding is very easy to learn. It is a time where one can explore and enjoy nature.     SWIMMING Osterville has someof the most beautiful beaches on the Cape. Located on a peninsula formed by the harbor, the East Bay inlet and the bay itself, Dowses Beach offers options for beach going experiences. If it’s too windy or rough on the ocean side, beachgoers – particularly families with children – can splash around on the protected bay side. This semi-public beach offers free parking to residents who obtain a beach permit. Lifeguards are on duty daily in the summer; showers, restrooms and concessions are offered in the beach house. Swimming lessons are available for grades 1-8 thru the Town of Barnstable. Those seeking a fresh or flat-water beach should visit Joshua’s Pond. The beach is a stretch of sand that fringes a grassy park with mature trees. Also an ideal spot for picnics, the pond features a nearly level beach that has a gradual slope. Families with small children will find this unguarded beach to be a place where their kids can splash around in relative safety. Restrooms are available; a resident parking permit is required. Sampson’s Island is an uninhabited, undeveloped beach island of 15 acres in Barnstable. A favorite of residents of Osterville, many people stay for the day and dine on the beach as well. Peak times such as weekends and holidays, the island is packed with families and offers great viewing of boats as they navigate the narrows. Osterville-born photographer David Hansen has a keen eye for what makes this special place so visually appealing. After all, he’s been taking beautiful photographs here for decades. While he started out as an amateur, his work was so well received that he built a thriving professional studio in the village center, where he is now joined by two of his daughters, Katie and Amy. His business focuses on weddings, engagements, senior pictures, and portraits of families in all shapes and sizes. What they all have in common, though, is that they are firmly anchored in this picture-perfect place. “Osterville offers many beautiful picture opportunities, from the quaint downtown area to the gardens and woodlands of Armstrong-Kelley Park, to the many beaches, coves and marinas,” Hansen notes. The most important element in taking great pictures, he says, is the lighting, and Osterville in the early mornings and dusky evenings provides just the right amount of softness to caress subjects. “Family portraits are usually taken at the beach or at a client’s home,” he says. “Dowses Beach is our first choice because it offers such a wide variety of backgrounds – Nantucket Sound on one side, East Bay on another side and the channel and jetty on another side. Beach roses and grass add to the Cape Cod setting. We are always looking for flattering, soft light.” If you’re looking for beautiful vistas, “Landscape photography, too, is best done in the very early morning, or around sunset,“ Hansen comments. “I often see people photographing the sunset over East Bay at Dowses Beach, and this spot is great for that, but I think the best scene is often looking over Nantucket Sound, away from the sunset.     38 MATTHEWSCHULZ Osterville native, painter,and gallery owner Matthew Schulz is clear when he notes that he didn’t choose to become an artist. “It chose me,” he says. “Drawing can be taught,” he adds. “Understanding color mixes can be taught and certain compositions can be repeated. But the actual artistry and creation comes from within; and that cannot be taught, it can only be cultivated.” It is that fundamental pull towards color, light, shape and composition that comes from within him, and which fuels his life’s work. He says he’s been painting since he was in the seventh grade, but was formally taught at the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts, concentrating in painting. While his work defies strict categorization he says, “It definitely falls into the genre of Realism; beyond that I would say my work is a mix of Tonalism, Abstraction, and exacting Realism. Realism is just recognizable abstraction.” His paintings are typically large in size. This, he says, is a direct result of his vision, literally his vision. “I am extremely nearsighted, but not metaphorically. Objects go out of focus at four inches from my eyes. As a child I thought of it as flaw, a weakness, but now I have come to understand it as one of my great strengths. Unlike most artists I do not have to squint my eyes for color agreement or spatial understanding.     His nearsightedness shapeshis choice to paint large works that have become a hallmark of his style. “I paint with my glasses on, which narrows my field of view, thus objects appear smaller. For example, working on a 40"x60" painting wasn’t overwhelming because it did not look large. A 12"x16" format is about as small as I’m comfortable working.” His paintings primarily depict landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, and sporting scenes. His great love of the outdoors was fostered during his youth in the marshes, woods, and waterways of Cape Cod and Maine. His works have been part of solo and juried group exhibitions, including at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Copley Society in Boston, the Mystic Maritime Gallery in Connecticut, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wisconsin, and at the Cape Cod Museum of Fine Art in Dennis. “Most of my work is held in private collections,” he notes. “Although ‘Evening Amber’ is part of the permanent collection at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, generously donated in 2010 by Christopher Samuel Hyland in honor of his mother Patricia.” He is also proud to note that he is slated to create the 2014 Pops by the Sea program cover painting. His influences range from 19th century painters such as Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt to contemporaries such as Robert Bateman, Joseph P. McGurl, and Paco Young. He is especially grateful for the friendship and encouragement of art patron, his dear friend, the recently deceased Carolyn Crossett Rowland, who was also a great supporter of the Osterville Village Library. “ Our friendship was born out of mutual respect and love of all things beautiful.     Osterville Village Library Bythe Numbers Two years ago this past March, the Osterville Village Library celebrated the opening of our beautiful new facility. It truly took a village to make the dream of a world-class, modern facility that could offer residents and visitors of all ages the best a library can offer and more. As we passed our 2-year milestone, it was rewarding to look back at how far we’ve come in just two short years. It’s the place to hang out We love that we’ve become the place for young and old alike to meet, socialize, explore and work. For example: a group of avid Bridge players enjoy an afternoon of competition and camaraderie; folks enjoy the fire on a cold day and catch up on the Wall Street Journal; a grandmother watches her grandkids explore the children’s room; budding architects build amazing things out of Legos™ ; a college s tudent watches an online calculus lecture on one of our iMacs; a woman researches her family tree with the help of one of our librarians; friends who wandered in browse the latest hard-cover novels; a retired couple learn how to download books to their e-readers. And then there are the art exhibits and the meetings, lectures, movie nights and other activities in our community space upstairs. It’s all been an exciting first chapter at the new OVL. Adding it all up In addition to experiencing the energy of our new facility, it’s rewarding to look at the data.
