3. Research
Strengths- Watching music videos helped me come up with ideas for my music video. I learned
techniques that I could use
The experiments helped me try out certain styles and techniques that I planned to include in
my music video.
Researching my genre and the conventions of my genre helped with my music video as it
showed me what things were commonly used in and associated with dance and D+B music
videos, such as lighting and colour etc and so I could implement these into my video.
Weaknesses- My research was pretty basic
Information was often pretty hard to find since I wasn’t researching an extremely popular
genre of music or an extremely popular artist.
This meant it was difficult when I had to research about things such as characteristics of my
artist since I wasn’t really too sure what I was looking for considering he only has a few music
videos on youtube.
When I was trying to find out about things such as the conventions of Drum and Bass music
there wasn’t too much info on it so I often needed to research similar genres instead such as
EDM.
4. Planning
Strengths of planning- Since I planned a few different ideas and songs I
had a few different ideas to choose from.
I came up with some good ideas through planning such as using a POV
view that I added to my final product.
Weaknesses of planning- I had all my first idea planned out but I didn’t
have when I was going to do it or who was going to be in the video. This
meant that I had to do another idea since I wasn’t really prepared.
Also I didn’t plan too much for my final music video. I knew what I was
going to do but I was just going to film when I got there and then plan
what order I was going to do my shots in.
5. Time Management
I don’t think I managed my time well.
I did complete my work on time, however I filmed it later than I would have wanted to and the video I filmed wasn’t my
planned idea. This was because I was low on time and didn’t have enough people to film my original idea of robbers in
just a few days. I had came up with a backup idea of filming at the arcade, so I spent most of that week planning my
filming.
I wasn’t very prepared to do my music video- I had an idea of what I wanted to do for my video but I was only sure of 3
people that would be in the video when I needed at least 6.
However, when I decided to do my new idea instead of my original idea, I think I managed my time well. I arranged when I
wanted to film and I got all my kit booked on time. My video wasn’t hard to edit either so I got my video edited and
completed in two lessons.
Even though I didn’t film my original idea, I am more happy with this idea to be honest. However, If I had more time to
complete my work I would have probably filmed some better shots of things like me playing pool and other arcade
games since in all of these videos I am playing the arcade games pretty badly which doesn't look that impressive on
video. I would have also filmed a bit more footage in general since I was running out of footage.
6. Technical Qualities – editing/post
Similarities
Both of these videos use fast cuts
and lots of different shots to stay in
time with the music
Neither of these videos use special
effects.
Differences
My music video has kept in the background
sound, whilst the other music video has edited
out the sound.
See The World by Gomez My music video
7. Technical Qualities - camera
Similarities
The videos are both filmed with a first person
POV so that you feel like you are the character.
The videos are both filming pretty normal things
such as eating food and playing pool. This makes
sure that the viewer can relate to the video since
they are things that people have done.
Differences
The music video for ‘See The World’ is all in a first
person POV whilst my video contains mostly POV but
also other camera shots.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
Things I liked about my work: I like the lighting for my video. I think that the flashing lights look nice and keep your
attention
I am happy with the pace of the video, I think that the video goes well with the type of song. My footage starts off slowly
and increases in pace which is the same as the song- starting slowly and increasing in pace.
I like the clips of the arcade games being played. The flashing lights keep your attention.
Things I would improve: One thing that would improve my work would be getting some better footage, where I am playing
the arcade games better. In the video a lot of the games I was playing pretty badly- for example when I was playing pool
the only shots I filmed of myself were ones where I was missing badly and on a game where I needed to throw the balls at
the targets, I barely hit any. This doesn’t look that visually impressive for a music video and is really one of the only things I
don’t like in my music video.
Another thing I didn’t like about my work is that I keep touching the camera. The video is meant to be in a first person
perspective so the viewer feels as if they are the person in the video, so it kind of ruins this effect by making it obvious that
it is just being filmed on a camera. To improve this, I could just edit these bits out of the video.
(My hand in the way)
I think that I could have also filmed some more clips than I did. Some clips in the music video were really just added in
because I was running out of footage.
9. Audience Appeal
Things that would appeal to D+B fans-
In dance music videos the shots are pretty fast and are often in time with the music so that the viewers of the video keep
interested.
Lighting-The lighting is bright and colourful which would appeal to D+B fans since drum and bass music is often listened to
at nightclubs and parties with similar lighting.
Setting- The setting of music videos in the dance genre (e.g D+B, house music etc) is often a lively location with a lot going
on. I think that an arcade is quite a lively location as there is loud music playing, lots of games and people there. Having the
arcade of the location will appeal to fans of Drum and bass since the target audience of this genre is young people and an
arcade is a place that many young people go to so the viewers may be able to relate to the characters.
The video is just of four friends. Most people should be able to relate to this
The target audience is mainly young, working class people, and the people in the music video are all working class young
people that are wearing normal, casual clothing that teenagers and young people typically wear such as hoodies. This
appeals to the audience since they will be able to relate to these characters.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
I liked the bit when it cut to the machine where you turn the handle and
get stuff out of it and the music like paused. The cuts where smooth
and not jarring
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think the audio and music could have been synced a bit more tightly.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
I enjoyed the video very much. Fast paced with plenty of interesting shots
that were edited to fit with the soundtrack.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
Perhaps there could have been an introduction piece as the boys walk into
the arcade so that it shows the difference between the calm outside world
and the excitement of the games in the arcade.
13. Feedback 3
What did you like about the product?
I like the fast pace of the music. It fits nicely with the arcade
environment. It was effective when some of the natural sounds were
left in alongside the actual tune eg the sound of the pool balls
breaking, the handle being turned and the air hockey pucks against
the paddles.
I liked the repetition of the basketball hoops being shot. I also thought
that the image of the first pool break and the “popping” sound aimed
towards the camera gelled well with the music.
I also liked the flashing lights, and the timing of the old-style arcade
games such as Space Invaders aligned with the speed of the tune.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
Improvements might include editing out some background activities
such as the children running by and the Scooby Doo machine seemed a
bit too comical somehow.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that the audio could be a bit better, since sometimes you can hear the
background noise very clearly when other times you can barely hear it at all
I also agree that their should have been an introduction to the boys entering the
arcade. I did plan on showing this but I forgot to film it on the night.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree with editing out some of the background activities such as the kids
running around. I wanted a lively energetic atmosphere for my video and I think
having other people moving around in the background helps increase this.
Also, although I don’t really mind the Scooby Doo arcade machine in the
background, I can see how it is distracting and looks a bit out of place. I could
have maybe played with the other controller on the right instead the one on the
left that I was using so then it wouldn’t be in focus.
I think that I could have synced the music and audio a bit better, but I think I did a
pretty decent job.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
If I could change anything about my music video based on my peer
feedback I would definitely introduce the characters at the beginning
of the video. I would maybe do a tracking shot following us walking
through the door.
As well as this I would sync the audio and music a bit more tightly.
16. Action Plan for future development
Problems: My original ideas- I think I was thinking of too complex and complicated ideas
originally when I should have just thought of more simple and easy to film ideas.
A problem I faced was that I couldn’t film my original idea since I didn’t have the people and I
didn’t have everything planned out. I think that this idea as well as some of my ideas from the
planning were too complicated really and if I need to make something like this in future I
should just think of more simple and easy to film ideas
I think also that I should have arranged from earlier on in my planning who I was going to have
in my video since I only had a few people that said they wanted to be in it.
I maybe should have chose a more popular song/genre as it was sometimes it was hard to
research the exact genre I was looking for so I needed to research similar genres instead.
Things I enjoyed: I enjoyed editing my music video as well as my experiments and this is
something that I would like to explore again in the future.
I enjoyed filming the video and using the gopro. I think filming in a first person view looks cool
and it is something that I may consider doing for other media products in the future that
involve filming.
