1. Market Research Report
The purpose of my market research is to find the potential and suitable audience for my music
magazine that I will be producing and what the majority would prefer. By doing this, I used a method
of creating a questionnaire with different questions and randomly getting 10 people to fill in with
many different options in each question by collecting quantitative and qualitative data’s in order to
find out statistically and people’s preference.
1. Are you a male or female?

Male Female
The reason I asked this question is to find out each of these genders interest and I think this question
is one of the most important ones that are needed as this would link to the other questions that
would give me a great idea of each of these genders similarities. In this graph it shows a quantitative
data that statistically 50% are male and 50% are female. I did this purposely in order to have an
equal amount as we know how the majority of male’s opinions are very different from females. In
order to improve this I think I could have asked more people to fill in the questionnaire of at least 10
more people with an equal amount of males and females. This would be done in order to make my
results more reliable and with asking 5 male and female may not be enough and sometimes
unreliable. This influences for my magazine to have a unisex type of magazine that would engage
many people in reading and buying the magazine especially the colour that would make a big impact
on people’s viewings. For example I could use different varieties of blues that is suitable for both of
these genders.
2. 2. In what age group are you
in?
12 - 15
Dec-15
16 - 20
21 - 30
31 - 40
41 - 50
51 and over
I asked this question in order to find out the specific target niche for my music magazine that I will
be using in order to use the right features, contents and news for them to be interested in. In this
graph it shows that people aged 16-20 are more targeted for my music magazine, I did this using a
quantitative data by asking random people who were interested to fill out the music magazine
survey that I made, only 1 person at the ages of 12 – 15 and 21 – 30 were passionate about music
which tells me that they are not the target audience that I will be focusing on. In order to improve, I
could have done my questionnaire in high streets to find many people who walk out of music shops
and ask them if they want to fill in the survey, this will give me a wider range of audiences especially
for other ages. This influences me to have my target audience for young adults at the age of 16 – 20
so I will be using a mixture of formal and informal words to make them feel suitable for the
magazine. For example, posting upcoming concert or events I can use rhetorical questions by using
informal words in order for them to feel encouraged and feel drawn in.

Employed Unemployed Student a Student at
Secondary school College/University
3. I asked this question in order to find out people who filled in this survey if they are students or have
jobs. I did this by giving them a choice of their occupations which tells me that only 1 people who
were employed was interested in music and 2 people were a student in a secondary school. In this
graph it shows the majority of people are aged 16 – 20 who were most likely to be students at a
college or university. In order to improve I could have separated the options about employment or
students, this should be done because students may have a part time job who can buy magazines
every week or some students who don’t have a part time job may likely to buy every other week.
This influences me to focus more on student such as making student tips at the magazine as many
students would need advice and tips although related to music and how it may help them when
revising which also counts or students at secondary schools. For example, it helps them to make
them feel calm and this would help them to feel refreshed.
4. How much music magazines
do you buy monthly?
Once a month
Twice a month
Three times a month
Four times four
More than a month
times a month
I asked this question for people who buy a weekly music magazine of how much they buy monthly. I
did this by giving them a range of options in order for me to find out how dedicated they are in
finding out music. In this graph it shows that half of the people who filled in this survey buy music
magazines twice a month, 3 people buys magazines once a month and the rest buys a magazine
three times a month. No one picked more than four times a month although weekly magazines do
not produce more than 4 times a month. The reason I mentioned this in the question because some
people may buy magazines from different publishers in order to compare which has the right
information of finding their needs. In order to improve I could have been more specific in the
question as I thought some people who filled in the survey may not have fully understood the
question as I did not mention including from different brands. This influences me to produce
magazines every other weeks as many of the audiences would prefer to stick to one brand. Although
only 5 people buy every other week which may not be valid, I think this would not affect the
audiences view of feel discouraged in buying the music magazine.

Pop RnB House Rock Classic Jazz Other
music
I asked this question in order to find out the audiences interest in their type of music they are most
interested in. I did this by giving them a range of main options that people might listen to. In this
graph it shows that people are most likely to listen to pop, RnB and house music with a quantitative
data of 30% each, and the 10% shows that they mostly listen to rock. In order to improve I could
have used more main genres of music to make it more specific for the audiences but still focus on
these main genres or could have made them written down one example of music they listen to. This
influences me to use these types of music including other music genres to use top 10 hits each, as I
feel that the research I did was unreliable because of only 10 people managed to fill in the survey.
6. Which type of these music
magazines do you mainly read?
Q
Vibe
NME
Rollingstones
Nylon
BillBoard
Other
I asked this question in order to find out the audience’s best magazine that they read. In the graph it
shows that 50% of the people who filled in this survey mainly read the NME magazine. 20% each on
Q and Vibe whereas only 10% on Billboard. This shows that NME is more popular which I need to
research on such as the features they use which I can use for my own version of the music magazine
that I will be producing. This influences me to look at the NME magazine in which people mostly
focuses at and for this would give me good brief ideas on what I could use from the magazine. To
improve I can look at the differences and similarities of these popular magazines which I can also use
but setting in a different way that would give me different ideas and also I could look at other
5. magazine that may not be as popular but may have good features that these popular magazines
don’t have.

Convenience stores Supermarkets Music shops Other
I asked this question in order to find out where they buy their music magazines. The reason why I
asked did this is to give me a brief idea of the appropriate location and place to where I could sell
them. In the graph it shows that 50% of the people buy their magazines in music shops whereas 30%
buy them from supermarkets and 20% at convenience stores. I think the reason for music shops
seem to be more a popular place to buy would be because they are more specific about music and it
has a wider range of different other magazines. This influences me to sell my magazine on music
shops, in doing this would give me a better chance of people reading and buying the magazine. If I
was to do this again by having a reliable data I can use a frequency table of the options above of
people buying a magazine in that particular place. For example, people in music shop who buys a
music magazine.
8. Which part of the music
magazine do you mostly focus
on?
Front Cover
Top music charts
Top Artists
Upcoming
Concerts/Events
Other
6. I asked this question in order to find out the audience’s purpose of buying the magazine which
depends on the features of the magazine. In the graph it shows that 40% of the people would look
for upcoming concerts or events, 40% of people also focus on the top artists whereas the 20% of
people would look for top artists. The results show that more people are focused on upcoming
concerts and events and the top artists whom I can use as cover lines at the front cover of my
magazine which would attract many audiences in buying the magazine. To improve I could have
given them a wider options such as if they have any suggestion of what features they may want to
be appeared in the magazine which some music magazines may not have. This is because I think that
this should be more based on the audiences’ opinions and beliefs.

£1 - £1.50 £1.51 - £2.50 £2.51 - £4.00 £4.01 - £5.00 More than
£5.00
I asked this question in order to find out how much people spend on a magazine. I asked this
question because I think this is one of the main important ones as the majority of people are more
conscious of the price especially for those who may not have a part time job and are students. In the
graph it shows that 50% of the people spends from £4.01 - £5.00, whereas 30% spends from £1 -
£1.50. The results tell me that £4.1 - £5.00 is the average price of a music magazine which I think is
quite expensive for students especially when the magazine is aimed at them. I think the price of my
magazine should be of at least £3.00 unless if I want the price to be £4.00 - £5.00; for example, I
could add small merchandises relating to the top artists or bands at the top charts or create articles
with specific details or information for the audiences to read. This gives me a better option in many
ways of what I could set my price in. To improve I think I should have asked how much they are
willing to spend rather than how much they actually spend. The reason for this is to find out the
right selling price for the music magazine, although there is a disadvantage because some people
may want cheaper prices.
In conclusion, I have decided to target my music magazine for 16 – 20 year olds which both male and
female would enjoy reading an also focusing on the features of the magazine that I will be creating
which again would make them feel that they are part of the magazine.
