2. What is a plural word?
• Plural words/nouns are words used to indicate that there is more than
one person, animal, place, thing, or idea.
• We can divide them into 3 groups.
3. I) Plural in -es
Some words end with es (pronunciation IZ) :
Examples:
- words ending with s, x, sh, ch : dresses, buses, taxes, boxes, brushes,
matches.
- words ending with o : tomatoes, potatoes,
BUT WE CAN ALSO FIND-> pianos, photos, kilos.
- words ending with a consonant + y : hobbies, babies, families, ladies,
countries, stories.
4. II) Words in f, fe, lf
Most of the words ending with f, fe, lf have their plural in ves.
Examples: shelf/shelves ; leaf/leaves ; wife/wives ; knife/knives.
5. III) Irregular plural
Some words have irregular plurals. As for the irregular verbs you have to know
them by heart.
Examples:
man /men
woman /women
child /children
foot /feet
tooth /teeth
mouse /mice
penny /pence.
