2. Competition
If I was to publish my magazine it would have to compete on the market
against other magazines if the same genre. Analyzing the competition will help
me to avoid mistakes they make and improve my own magazine which will
help me compete
3. Front page
I think that what Jazz magazines all have in
common is that the front covers are very
simple. They all have a black background with
simple text either side of the dominant image.
Also, the dominant image is almost always
centered on the page. Something that I could
take from this to use in my own magazine is
that I should stay with the black background
but if I want to have my magazine stand out
from the rest I could change something about
the text that surrounds the image on the
cover so that mine looks different from the
rest of the Jazz magazines.
4. Contents Page
Jazz magazines’ contents pages are very
inconsistent; we can see here on the right
that the October contents page matches
the theme that the front covers had with
the black background, centralized dominant
image and simple text around the side, on
the other side we can see that the March
contents page has a lighter background
with just a small image at the bottom of the
page and it is much more focused on the
text. Something I could take from this is that
I know that I can switch it up from the cover
theme if I feel it is necessary.
5. Double page spread
The design of double page spread articles within jazz magazines is very simplistic and
is way more focused on the article itself rather than the image. What I mean by this
is that a lot of other magazines have an entire page dedicated to the dominant
image but I find that in a lot of jazz articles the image is minor and very out of the
way to make room for more of the article. What I can take from this is that I should
focus a lot more on the article than getting the perfect image as the image will be a
minor part of the 2 page spread.
