316 stainless steel (1)
1. The 316 stainless steel: the new edge of stainless steel
316 Stainless Steel is also known as Marine grade stainless steel. After 304, it is the most used
austenite steel. It is molybdenum- bearing austenitic stainless steel. It is not rust-proof. It has
negligible response to magnetic fields. It has superior corrosion resistance. Because of its greeter
resistance, it is used in marine sector. It has lower carbon content than 301 to 303 series alloy
and because of that it makes it suitable for welding purposes. It is readily brake or roll formed
into different parts for usage in the industrial sector, architectural sector and transportation fields.
Post-weld is not needed when welded in thin sections. The physical and mechanical properties of
316 stainless steel and this alloy are almost same.
Characteristic features of 316 stainless steel:
• Excellent toughness
• Even down to cryogenic temperatures
• Conduction to heat : POOR
• Conduction to electricity : POOR
Heat resistance, corrosion resistance:
• It has excellent resistance to oxidation.
• Grade 316H has high carbon content. It has higher power at elevated
temperature. It is used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures
above 500 degree Celsius.
• Grade 316L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be used in
the 425-860 degree Celsius range.
• It is subject to crevice corrosion and pitting above 60 degree Celsius.
• It is considered potable to water up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient
temperature reducing to 500mg/L at 60 degree Celsius.
• It is not resistant to warm sea water even though it is called ‘marine grade
stainless steel’.
Where is marine grade steel used?
• This alloy can withstand corrosive attacks by the sulfite liquors and
sulfurous acids and because of this; it is widely used in paper pulp industry.
• It is used for surgical implants.
• It is also used in marine environment.
2. • It is used in pharmaceuticals.
316 Stainless Steel is usually bit costly than other alloys. People often buy 304 instead of 316, as
there is no visible difference in the two alloys. To make sure one needs a material test report
(MTR) to get the actual material.
