Music video regulation and censoship 1
1.
2. The BBFC stands for ‘British Board of Classification’ its job is examine the
issues in all media sources such as films and television programmes.
Some of the issues looked at in media content include; Violence, drugs and
explicit language.
The BBFC are responsible for the censorship of video works in many
industries from film to music videos, they are required to analyze and
examine films to see if the content is applicable for the age rating is has
been received. Other than looking for inappropriate content which may
directly affect the age rating, the examiners also look for; the context of the
video and the impact on the audience and how they would feel.
Every 4-5 years the BBFC carries out a consultation to find out the public
views on age ratings of films to enable them to adjust the guidelines to
meet the overall attitude of the public.
The government recognizes the BBFC as the organization which are the
authority of certifying videos and other media forms.
The main importance behind why BBFC operates is protecting young
viewers and vulnerable audiences which could be affected by unsuitable
content and to show the audience the correct viewing decision.
All films examined by the BBFC receive a certificate and consumer advice
which reference the inappropriate material the film contains.
3. The age rating for the music videos on YouTube and Vevo are clearly displayed
showing if or if not it is suitable for children viewing.
The UK music industry is working alongside the government to take more
thought into protecting younger audiences from inappropriate videos online.
On apps like YouTube the music videos that are rated 18 by the BBFC have to
have an age gate access, therefore any viewers which are under the age of 18
cannot watch the videos as the account have to be signed in as 18+. YouTube
also features a “restricted mode” which allows parents to archive content which
they feels as inappropriate for their children to watch.
Vevo are working on updating the site to make restrictions to age more visible
and allow users to add these age restrictions to there videos.
Government are developing digital service providers in being more effective in
displaying age rating on their websites.

applicable for
audience of all ages.

not likely to offend or
harm the audience.
Legally a child of any
age can watch a film
with this rating but
not all “U” rated films
are aimed at
children.
PG stands for “parental

it is advised that
parents watch the film
with a child under the
age of 8 although
legally a child of any
age can watch a film
with this rating. Films
with this rating may
have scenes which
could affect younger
audiences.
No one under the age

accompanied by
a person over the

No one under the age
of 18 is allowed
to see this film at
the cinema,
some content
from films of this
rating will be
inappropriate and
often may be an
offense to some
adult viewers.
5. Channel censorship is important when considering what channel is best suit to
air the music video on due to the content which they usually show and
other factors such as the typical genre for the channel and the audience
which the channel attracts.
Some possible choices for the channel to stream the music video that were
are going produce, we are deciding based on factures such as the genre
and the type of fans which the music channel attracts.
MTV (music television) is an American entertainment broadcasting channel, its
demographic of viewers in young adults although more currently they have
attracted a much younger audience due to the TV shows they broadcast.
Some channels on MTV involve a lot of inappropriate content and often at
the start of 18 rated programs such as “Geordie shore” and “Ex on the
beach” there will be a warming message to indicate to the viewers that the
content is unsuitable to younger audiences. The music usually played on
this channel is the more popular “chart” and pop music as this is what
interests the audience more although there is no specific genre for this
channel.
6. Channel AKA is a British music channel, it is owned by the
production company “all around the world”. The usual genre
played by this channel is hip hop, RnB, rap and grime with the
sister channels being Clubland TV and Now music. This
channel helped UK artists such as Tinie Tempah, Dizzee
Rascal and Wretch 32 reach their music career breakthrough.
The AKA channel broadcasts music 24 hours everyday which
shows it will conform to the teenage/young adult audience as
they are the most likely to be viewing at the later hours. The
music genre choices suits the target audience for this music
channel due to the age range and what is popular for this
audience. This channel is also fits the target audience for the
music video we are producing as popular DJs have or have
previously had shows on this music channel such as “Tim
Westwood” who is a very popular host/DJ for the teenage and
young adult audience due to his appearances at festivals such
as wireless and hosting shows and channels on TV and
YouTube.
7. Due to the target audience of the music channel I believe that ‘Channel AKA’
is the best choice to stream the music video that we are producing, as the
song is of the RNB/ Hip-Hop genre and this is what is popular on the channel,
Also the target audience of the channel is the same as who we are aiming the
video for as this is who the content of the video is most appropriate for and
this audience may find the most interest in the type of music and the song
and other songs by the artist.
Censorship for our music video is important to consider due to the content
that is displayed in the video, as themes of drugs, possible violence and
sexual content may be displayed in the video, this will mean that the video
will have to be played past UKs watershed time of 9 O'clock.
Based on the content of our music video I think it would be rated by the BBFC
as 18 due to the content that it will contain such as drugs use and
inappropriate content.
