Music Genre Research for AS Media coursework by Joe Swain

1. R&B is one of the biggest genre in music right now due to how diverse it can be means each R&B song can sound
completely different when compared to another, its diversity allows a very open style for magazine colours but
usually what all covers have in common are that they all utilise bright colours with either close ups or medium close
ups of the cover star.

2. Hip-Hop / Rap
Hip-hop is commonly more serious than R&B therefore its covers are toned down a lot colour wise, utilising paler toned
down colours that contrasts for backgrounds and then close up photographs of the cover star who usually pose in a more
serious pose or with a stern facial expression.

3. Classical Magazine
• Classical music magazines are a lot less bright and eye catching and are usually plain, appealing to only those
with an interest in the genre. Due to it’s limited audience the covers never really attempt to stand out on
shelves with colours or headlines, it sticks to a sophisticated look with a cover star in a normal background.

4. Rock
Rock magazines seem to use the colour red a lot with their front covers, either with the title, background or the
clothing on the artist themselves, the contrasting colour seems to be a common feature when it comes to rock front
covers.
