1. SIMPLE PRESENT
We use the simple present to talk about
repeated actions or permanent situations in
the present, that is to say, when an action is
happening right now, or when it happens
regularly (or unceasingly, which is why it’s
sometimes called present indefinite).
Auxiliary verb:
1) Positive form: Do; Does (3 rd person)
2) Negative Form: Do not / Don’t ; Does not /
Doesn’t (3 rd person)
Modal Verbs:
- Can, Could, May, Might, Must, Shall,
Should, Will, Would.
Structure
1) Affirmative sentence:
Subject + verb (-s, -es, -ies in 3 rd person) +
compliment
- I drive a school bus every day.
- She speaks French very well.
- Anna drives very slowly in the highway.
- They listen to Led Zeppelin’s music at
work.
Subject + modal verb + verb + compliment
- We can play piano and guitar.
- He has to be responsible.
- The weather might improve.
- You must go to school tomorrow.
2) Negative sentence:
Subject + don’t/doesn’t + verb (-s, -
es, -ies in 3 rd person) + compliment
- They don’t understand the lesson.
- Charles doesn’t read the newspaper.
- I don’t read books at night.
- The bird doesn’t because is hurt.
Subject + modal verb + not + verb +
compliment
-It might not be a good idea to call
John.
- Mary shouldn’t go to the movies.
- You shall not pass to that office.
- My grandfather couldn’t swim.
3) Interrogative sentence:
Do/does + subject + verb +

- Do they travel very often?

- Could you write an e-mail for me?
- May I speak to you for a second?
- Can I have another chocolate?
