7. A lesson plan creates purpose
It’s the instructor’s road map of what students need to learn
and how it will be done effectively during the class time.
A successful lesson plan addresses and integrates these 3 key
components:
1. Objectives for student learning
2. Teaching/Learning activities
3. Strategies to check student understanding
WHY LESSON PLANNING?
8. What do I want
students to learn?
What teaching and
learning activities
will I use?
How will I check for
understanding?
9. 1. Outline Learning Objectives: What do you want students to
learn and be able to do at the end of class?
-Specific
-Outcome Based
-Measurable
-Describe Student Behavior
-Refer to “Helpful Verbs” for writing objectives handout
Example: Students will describe the reasons a small business
develops a business plan and will identify the components of a

12. 4. Plan to check for understanding: Think about specific
questions you can ask students in order to check for
understanding.
Write your questions down, then paraphrase so that you are
prepared to ask the questions in different ways.
Decide what kinds of questions will be productive for
discussion and what questions might sidetrack the class.
Try to predict the answers your questions will generate.

13. 5. Develop A conclusion and a preview: Summarize the main
points of the lesson.
State the main points yourself
Ask a student to help you summarize
Ask all students to write down what they think were the main
points of the lesson
Conclude the lesson not only by summarizing the main points,
but also by previewing the next lesson
“Tomorrow’s topic is ______________. How does today’s
lesson relate”?

14. 6. Create a realistic timeline:
Estimate how much time each of the activities in your plan
will take.
Plan a few minutes at the end of class to answer any
remaining questions and to sum up key points
Be flexible-be ready to adjust your lesson plan to students’
needs and focus on what seems to be more productive rather
than sticking to your original plan
