2. Edukans is an international development organisation. The company is specialized in
education, especially for disadvantaged children and young people. The organization is located in
Amersfoort, The Netherlands.
Edukans dreams of a world in which every child has the possibility to develop itself and to become a
confident grown-up. A grown-up with the capacities to influence his or her own future, and that gives the
same opportunity to his/her own children. In order to make their dream come true, Edukans works with local
partners, well-trained and motivated teachers, committed parents and relevant training for young people.
A lot of children do not get opportunities that they deserve, since a lot of education is not good. Edukans
wants to change it, they want better education for the children and young people that are disadvantaged. For
the upcoming years Edukans wants to do several things: they want to help schools improve the quality of
their education, they want to use education to pursue equal opportunities for boys and girls, fight child
marriage and prevent teenage pregnancy, they want to help children in emergency or conflict situations to go
back to school, and they want to help young people find work. Young people are being thought a trade and
entrepreneurship is being stimulated by training courses provided by Edukans.
All of the activities of Edukans are being realized by voluntary donations made by individuals, churches,
companies and other institutions (Edukans, 2017).
Organization
4. The roots of Edukans lie in the Dutch Union for Christian Education,
which is an organization that promotes Christian inspired education. Its
purpose was to make Christian inspired education available to children.
The organization is already advocating the importance of education for
decades, so that children can develop themselves. First they started in
the Netherlands, but now they also work in developing countries. Besides
the projects abroad, Dutch students were made aware of the situations of
the children of their own age in developing countries. Edukans was
founded in 2002 special for this (UnieNzv.nl, 2018).

6. CEO of Edukans is Ron Rijnbende. Mr. Rijnbende is the CEO of Edukans
since 2016, but is involved with Edukans a lot longer already. When
Edukans was founded, Mr. Rijnbende was involved already as CEO,
later on he was involved as one of the directors. In 2016, when former
CEO Kees de Jong retired, Mr. Rijnbende became again the CEO of
Edukans. According to Mr. Rijnbende, education is one of the most
powerful ways for development, for personal development, but also
for social development. The ones who get the least chances, deserve
the chance of education the most, so that they also get the opportunity
to grow their strengths (Edukans, 2017).
Management
7. Edukans also has a supervisory board. Once in five years a new
supervisory board is addressed. Currently, the following members are
part of the supervisory board: drs. A. Holster, R.W. van Tol RA, R.C.J. de
Haas, and drs. M.C. Verstraeten (Edukans, 2017).
As an organization, Edukans has received a CBF quality mark. A CBF
quality mark means that the organization meets certain, very strict,
quality restrictions (Edukans, 2017).
8. Edukans wants to provide high quality education in as many countries
and at as many schools as possible. Currently, they are active in the
following countries (Edukans, 2016):
Europe South America Africa Asia
Albania Bolivia Burkina Faso Bangladesh
Moldovia Nicaragua DR Congo India

Financial
9. 2016 was the last year of the current long-term company plan and the first year
without MFS subsidies from the Dutch government for Edukans. It can be seen as
a transition year since the organization had to implement changes within the
organization and the way of working. These changes were necessary in order to
be able to keep working on a future with education for everyone worldwide. The
result is a new strategic agenda for the period 2016 – 2020. This new agenda
gives Edukans the possibility to adapt to the new situation and continue working.
What keeps the same are the goals: availability to and high quality of education
in developing countries and involving Dutch citizens, especially Dutch schools. In
order to achieve this, four promises are made the organization would like to have
achieved by 2020 (Edukans, 2016):
· High quality primary education
· Education in emergency situations
· Jobs for youngsters through education focused on practice
· Equal education opportunities for boys and girls
