Expected Learning Outcomes:

All pupils will be able to know who is in An
Inspector Calls,and be able to have
impressions ofeach one from reading the
opening ofthe play. Students will be
annotating the play extensively.
Opportunities for Assessment:
Formative & summative
 APK – using their knowledge aboutpower,the differenttypes of power that can be
demonstrated and the idea of capitalism and socialism.This will be used to infer things
abouteach character
 Teacher questioning – teacher will question Ss throughoutthe lesson, asking them to
think independently aboutcognitively challenging questions
 Visual impressions – students will be analysing the picture, and thinking aboutwhat it tells
us aboutMr Birling’s character.
 Matching activity – students will have to match the character with the information.
 First impressions – students have to write their thoughts abouteach character, using their
own inference and thoughts
 Class discussion – collaborative ideas when discussing each character.
 Plenary – Who is your least favourite character on first impressions?
Cognitive challenges:
Desirable difficulties for all abilities; how will students progress?
Who is your least favourite character on first impressions? Students will
be consistently thinking about this question throughout the lesson, and
will develop their own feelings towards each character, as well as thinking
about the language in detail.
EBT strategies:
e.g. APK, reciprocal teaching, collaborative learning, advance & visual organisers,
similarities and differences, goals, repetition and practice, meta-cognition, feedback,
cognitive challenge, subject knowledge, summaries and note-taking
 APK – students will be constantly using their previous knowledge
about power and politics, and think about how it links with each
character

Lesson Plan pro forma Class: 9AS (ii) Set ability (around level 5/6 in the old NC levels) indicate levels of attainment Date: 7/3/2016 Time: 11:15 – 12:20 No. of pupils: 23 Unit /SoW: An Inspector Calls – Opening scene Key Learning Goals: ref. to exam board criteria/NC as appropriate … in pupil-friendly format: LO: To be able to gather a perspective of each character Expected Learning Outcomes: all pupils? some pupils? a few pupils? All pupils will be able to know who is in An Inspector Calls,and be able to have impressions ofeach one from reading the opening ofthe play. Students will be annotating the play extensively. Opportunities for Assessment: Formative & summative  APK – using their knowledge aboutpower,the differenttypes of power that can be demonstrated and the idea of capitalism and socialism.This will be used to infer things abouteach character  Teacher questioning – teacher will question Ss throughoutthe lesson, asking them to think independently aboutcognitively challenging questions  Visual impressions – students will be analysing the picture, and thinking aboutwhat it tells us aboutMr Birling’s character.  Matching activity – students will have to match the character with the information.  First impressions – students have to write their thoughts abouteach character, using their own inference and thoughts  Class discussion – collaborative ideas when discussing each character.  Plenary – Who is your least favourite character on first impressions? Cognitive challenges: Desirable difficulties for all abilities; how will students progress? Who is your least favourite character on first impressions? Students will be consistently thinking about this question throughout the lesson, and will develop their own feelings towards each character, as well as thinking about the language in detail. EBT strategies: e.g. APK, reciprocal teaching, collaborative learning, advance & visual organisers, similarities and differences, goals, repetition and practice, meta-cognition, feedback, cognitive challenge, subject knowledge, summaries and note-taking  APK – students will be constantly using their previous knowledge about power and politics, and think about how it links with each character Key Terminology:  An Inspector Calls  Socialism  Capitalism Resources:  Information sheets (x21)
