Proposed project title A short horror film
Section One: Title, objective, responsibilities
Title or working title of project (in the form of a question, commission or design brief)
A short horror film
Project objectives (eg, what is the question you want to answer? What do you want to learn how to do? What do you
want to find out?):
From making this short film I would like to find out what makes a successful film that fulfils its purpose.
In this case, the purpose of my film will be to scare people while keeping them intrigued.
This will include learning about different film editing skills, and exploring the best ways to capture
scenes that will constitute to a good film.
Section Two: Reasons for choosing this project
Reasons for choosing the project (eg, links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans,
knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important):
I have chosen this project because I have always been interested in how films are made and I have future plans
to pursue a career in media production. From this project I aim to develop my editing skills along with
improving my understanding on how a film is made including everything from the script to camera angles. I will
do this through thorough research and a lot of planning. I chose the topic of horror as a challenge to myself as I
feel that it will be difficult to create a film that has both an interesting plot and that will scare people and
therefore if this project is successful I will feel that I am capable of doing a lot more
Section Three: Activities and timescales
Activities to be carried out during the project (eg, research, development and analysis
of ideas, writing, data collection, numerical analysis, rehearsal techniques, production
meetings, production of final outcome, administration, evaluation, preparing for the
presentation, etc):
- I will have to research into different areas of filmmaking to establish the best
ways to create a successful horror film.
- I will need to research into different types of music that are used in horror
films
- I will need to create a plot
- I will need to create a script which will include details of the different scenes
- Following the script I will record the footage for the film and then edit the film
- I will then create a trailer for the film
How long this will take:
1 month
Milestone one:
Target date (set by tutor-assessor):
Milestone two:
Target date (set by tutor-assessor):
Section Four: Resources
What resources will you need for your research, write up and presentation (eg, libraries, books, journals, equipment,
rehearsal space, technology and equipment, venue, physical resources, finance):
For my project I will need a laptop, the internet, books, a space to shoot the film, a camera and video editing
software.
What your areas of research will cover?
I will be conducting research on the purpose of horror movies, what elements of horror movies
make them scary to others and the importance of music in a film.
