MINI LESSON
What is tone?
Tone is the way feelings are expressed. It is the attitude
that an author takes toward the audience, the subject, or the
character. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of
words. Some examples of tone include serious, humorous,
dismissive, threatening, formal, informal, pessimistic, optimistic,
and sarcastic.
We adopt a variety of tones in our day-to-day speech.
This intonation of our speech determines what message we
desire to convey.
Example #1: Father: “We are going on a vacation.”
Son: “That’s great!!!”
– The tone of son’s response is very cheerful.
Example #2: Father: “We can’t go on vacation this
summer.”
Son: “Yeah, great! That’s what I expected.”
– The son’s tone is sarcastic.
4

yourself, or better to have a partner.
1. (Guilty) I took the cake to school.
(Proud) I took the cake to school.

(https://youtu.be/l8a7qDKL2Yc).Transcript of the video is also
available for offline learning.
Directions: Pick out at least two lines of Maleficent and fill in the
Graphic Organizer below.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Maleficent is a 2014 American fantasy film starring Angelina
Jolie as the title character. Loosely inspired by Charles
Perrault's original fairy tale and Walt Disney's 1959 animated
film Sleeping Beauty, the film portrays the story from the
perspective of the eponymous antagonist, depicting her conflicted
relationship with the princess and king of a corrupt kingdom.
Merriweather: For you oh sweet Aurora, I wish you…)
(Maleficent enters the christening of Aurora)
Well, well….quite a glittering assemblage, King Stefan. (Fairies try
to protect Aurora) royalty, nobility, the gentry and how quaint, even
the rebel. I must say, I really felt quite distressed for not receiving
an invitation.
King: you are not welcome here)
Maleficent: Not what… ? (sad to an evil giggle)
Oh dear, what an awkward situation.
I had hoped it was merely due to some oversight. Well in that event
I’d best be on my way.
Queen: I hope we haven’t offended you, your Excellency)
Maleficent: Why no, your majesty. And to show I bear no ill will, I
too shall bestow a gift on the child.
6
Listen well, all of you! The princess shall indeed grow in grace and
beauty beloved by all who know her, but before the sun sets on her
sixteenth birthday she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a
spinning wheel and die.
King: Please
Maleficent: I like it when you beg, do it again.
King: I beg of you, please
Alright then, the princess can be woken from her sleep-like death,
but only by true love's kiss. This curse will last till the end of time,
no power on earth can change it.
(Dramatic exit)

DAY 3
MINI LESSON
Here are sample linkers to use to achieve cohesion
Last criteria in judging a spoken text is here! I hope you can
still sustain in reaching the final goal. Take a glimpse on how
cohesion is achieved by a speaker or a writer.
Cohesion means that what you are saying or writing is organized,
thus making it easier for your listeners or readers to understand.
Linking words or phrases, also known as linkers, are important
features of cohesion that help you connect your ideas in a logical
way. Cohesion is also a very important aspect of academic writing,
because it immediately affects the tone of your writing.
Here are some examples that illustrate the importance of
connecting your ideas more effectively in writing.
A. The hotel is famous. It is one of the most well-known hotels in
the country. The latest international dancing competition was held
at the hotel. The hotel spent a lot of money to advertise the event.
Because the hotel wanted to gain international reputation. But not
many people attended the event. (The connection of ideas is not
very good.)
B. The hotel, which is one of the most well-known hotels in this
region, wanted to promote its image around the world by hosting
the latest international dancing competition. Although the event
was widely advertised, not many people participated in the
competition.
(The connection of ideas is better than the first example.)
C. The latest international dancing competition was held at the
hotel, which is one of the most well-known hotels in this region.
The hotel spent a lot of money on advertising the event since it
wanted to enhance its international reputation; however, it failed to
attract many people.
(The connection of ideas is better than the first example.)
9
Directions: Arrange the jumbled sentences to form a coherent
paragraph.
GUIDED PRACTICE
Directions: Underline the connectives used in the paragraph that
show cohesion.
The grade 10 students left for their annual trip. Initially, they
visited the National Museum. There, they saw a lot of artifacts
having to do with the country’s past like antique pots and jewelry.
The students say that it was very enjoyable seeing the things on
display. In fact, they want to come back next year for another trip,
but unfortunately, this is their last year in Junior High School. Next,
they went to nearby Intramuros. Immediately, they liked the place.
Just like in the museum, a lot of interesting things can be seen
and learned. Finally, at five in the afternoon, they boarded the bus
and headed back to school.
My Own Business
a. Last summer I started a dog washing business.
b. I’ve been in business almost a year and I’m busier than ever.
c. Every Saturday, I have about seven dog-washing
appointments.
d. I made flyers describing my service and prices.
e. A few days later, my neighbor’s dog Skipper, was my first
customer.
f. Mom and I delivered them to all the houses in our
neighborhood.
g. Skipper’s owner thought I did such a great job that he told all
his friends.
h. I hope to save enough to buy my own pet store one day.
