A discussion with 20 members of the FSB on what small business can do to contribute to Manchester's Net Zero ambitions. Presentation covers green energy, energy efficiency and staff engagement.
4. Energy efficiency
Energy PEAK 4
Efficiency is best described as doing what you’ve always done just with
less.
A few low and no-cost things to consider:
- Heating costs increase by 8% for every 1 degree increase
- Lighting myth: turning on / off uses more electric, always best to turn off when not in
use
- Equipment gaps (e.g. fridges): need a gap of 5cm to allow air to circulate
- Office layout:
- Clutter away from windows / rads; and
- Consider light reflective paint at next revamp.
5. Electric vehicles
Energy PEAK 5
My experience:
- 1c/km travelled (VW eGolf)
- Gamification aspect
- Change in behaviour RE: charging
For your business:
- £350 off each installation (up to 40 units)
- No BIK for charging @ work for employees
- Various other incentives (case-by-case)
6. Heat pumps
Energy PEAK 6
Sealed heating system full of compressed gas – taken from low temp
(outside) to pressurise high temp (inside) and distribute around the house
via rads/underfloor.
Unit rate of electric is key! They are 4x as efficient as a gas boiler. Carbon
emissions ↓
Current cost all-in including install is between £7k to £18k (air source).

7. Staff engagement
Energy PEAK 7
Energy behaviours changes can contribute to an additional 10% saving on
your energy bills
Consider an energy raffle; staff submit energy saving ideas…
When looking for an opportunity ask:
1. How much energy am I actually using? estimated / free smart meter
2. When am I using it? time… overnight???
3. How much is it costing? variable / fixed
4. What can I do to reduce it? no and low-cost first...
8. News
Energy PEAK 8
05 April 2021 A lot of what we spoke about already, but also
reducing meat and dairy consumption…
