PowerPoint presentation from the "Printing the Past: Fostering an Interdisciplinary Approach to Museum Education through 3D Scanning and Printing session at the 2015 Virginia Association of Museums Conference
2. “Printing the Past!”
• Each Education Guide is given a kit of 7 3D
printed artifacts selected for interpretive value
– Cost: $35 per kit or about $5 per print
3. • The “Ed Shed” is an interpretive space for
multidisciplinary educational programming.
4. • The primary objective is to provide more
interactive programming for a younger
audience while simultaneously engaging the
general public in unique, one of kind
educational experiences.
5. • In addition, a secondary objective will be to
provide a central location for the public to get
a firsthand look at what goes on behind the
scenes at Jamestown Rediscovery and conduct
special programming centered around
collaborations with other partner institutions.
6. What kind of programs will be
offered?
• Curator’s Corner
– Watch conservators clean and conserve artifacts that were
found right below your feet! Get a rare and exciting look
into the lab work being done to preserve the past.
• James River Association, “The Great Return”
– Learn the incredible story of the mid-Atlantic Sturgeon
from members of the James River Association and how
research by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project has helped
in conservation efforts of the sturgeon’s habitats.
• Virginia Commonwealth University, We Paint the Past
– Meet the students at VCU who scan, print, and paint
artifacts from archaeological sites all over the country,
including Jamestown!
7. What kind of activities will be offered?
• Picking n’ Sorting
– Visitors will have the opportunity to discover genuine
artifacts for the very first time! Then they can identify
what they have found and contribute the ongoing research
by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project
• “JR in VR” Virtual Viewers
– Visitors can use virtual viewers to gain an up close look at
an active archaeological dig or a behind the scenes look at
the Jamestown Rediscovery Vault
• Out of Context Artifact (OoCA) Handling Station
– Hold in your hands genuine artifacts found by Jamestown
Rediscovery!
8. What kind of activities will be offered?
• A hand held scanner which visitors can use to
scan real artifacts and watch a 3D model appear
before their eyes
• An active 3D printer that can be viewed printing
replicas of artifacts found by Jamestown
Rediscovery
• Discovery Boxes- Tubs filled with 3D printed
artifacts buried in granulated material. After
finding the object, they can compare it to an
outline and scan a QR code for more information
9. Why should I care?
• Demonstrate the importance of community
awareness
• Use “proof of concept” as platform for
scalability
• Demonstrate accessibility of empowering
technology; both cost and use
• Rethink the boundaries of the museum
10. Why did we do it?
NMC Horizon 2015 Report Museum Edition Wiki
• Key trends
– Expanding concept of Museum Visitors
– Increasing focus on participatory experiences
– Growth of cross-institution collaboration
– Pushing boundaries of creativity
• Developments
– BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
– Makerspaces
– 3D Scanning
– Augmented and Virtual Reality
• Challenges
– Developing comprehensive digital strategies
– Low digital fluency of museum professionals
– Balancing connected and unconnected lives
– Measuring impact of new technologies
22. “JR in VR”
• Google Cardboard kit- $5 plus shipping
• Samsung Galaxy S 4- $200
• 360 Photo- Free
– Total: $205
Other Costs
-Dodo Case VR- $25
- Unofficial Cardboard- $30
*Comes assembled with headstrap
- Plastic Filament for 3D printed case prototypes- $10
-Mind melting frustration figuring out how to print
prototypes- priceless
23. Two offset images presented
separately to the left and right
eye of the viewer.
These two-dimensional images are
then combined in the brain to give the
perception of 3D depth.
27. • Expectations vs. Experience
• STEAM vs. STEM
• Blurring the line between online and onsite
• Creating meaningful experiences from afar
• Accessibility
• Reacting to visitor expectations
• Futureproof
