3. Construction and Demolition
Waste material that is produced in the
process of Construction, Renovation, or
Demolition of Structures.
Structures include buildings of all
types (both residential and non-
residential) as well as roads and
bridges
Components of C&D debris typically
include concrete, asphalt, wood,
metals, gypsum wallboard and
roofing.
3
4. Why Demolition is Dangerous ?
Demolition work is one of the most dangerous work.
REASONS/CAUSES
Easy to cause injury to human workers due to the difficulty of accessing into or
working inside a building which is under construction.
Falling of smaller objects or debris from the demolishing building.
Falling of Partially demolished structure.
Collapse of unstable structure due to original structure being disturbed.
4
5. What is the purpose of demolition?
“Demolition” means the tearing down, razing or
removal of a building or structure or portion thereof,
for the purpose of complete or partial removal of
buildings or structures, or to prepare for
reconstruction or remodeling of a building or
structure.
How does a controlled demolition
work?
Generally speaking, the term 'controlled demolition' refers to
the demolition of a building or structure by means of explosives. ...
Explosives on the lower floors then initiate a controlled collapse and
the building fails under its own weight, succumbing to gravity.

For
C & D
Waste
Management
To Reduce the amount of waste Product.
Needs to implemented mainly at the design Stage.
Reduce01
Use Materials more than once.
Reduces some of the need for new materials Purchase.
Cost Saving
Reuse02
Using materials to make new Products.
Reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials
Recycle03
Recovery Energy From waste.
In recovery, waste being prepared to fulfil that function in the plant or station.
Recovery04
Safe disposal of waste to landfill.
Use proper safety precautions.
Disposal05

11. Key Requirement of Waste Management Plan
• Types, quantities and qualities of wastes.
• Measures for reducing waste generation.
• On-site waste sorting.
• On-site and off-site reuse.
• Areas for waste storage.
• Quantities of wastes requiring off-site
disposal.
• Monitoring and auditing program
Don’t throwit away, it can be used in some other way.

15. What happens to demolition waste?
The process of demolition breaks a building into manageable pieces, that are either hauled to a landfill, sorted and
salvaged, or sold as scrap. The size and type of construction, as well as the schedule allowances and cost of
reclamation are factors that help determine what is done with the debris(malaba).
Where does construction waste go?
The traditional disposal way for construction waste is to send it to landfill sites. Sending the waste directly to a
landfill causes many problems: Waste of natural resources. Increases construction cost, especially the
transportation process.
Is construction waste hazardous?
As long as a potentially hazardous material remains unused and still in its package or container, or becomes a part
of a structure, it is simply that: potentially hazardous material. But once it becomes the by-product of a project in
the form of debris or trash, it then becomes hazardous waste.

16. Reasons of Repair/Renovation & Demolition
Due to redevelopment for
additional FSI
(Forest Survey of India)
B`
Due to frequent renovations
and construction by different
agencies due to poor co-
ordination
C`
Due to expiry of useful life of structure (generation of waste)
A
Due to poor quality of original
construction
B
Due to unauthorized (poor quality)
construction and additions
thereafter

19. How much does it cost to demolish a house in
INDIA
1
He cost to tear down a house varies a lot
and there is no exact figure that can be
specified. In Singh's case, he brought
down a 2BHK house to build a
3BHK+basement. During the demolition
and construction his family was living in a
rented house. The total cost incurred to
him was around Rs 40 lakh.
US
2
Demolishing a 1,500 square
foot house costs an average of
$18,000 and runs from $4-$15 per
square foot. Depending on the
location and materials, you could pay
as little as $6,000 or as much as
$22,5000.

20. Government initiatives
01
• MoUD vide its circular dated
28th June, 2012 stated all states
to set up C & D Waste recycling /
processing facilities in all cities
with population of over ONE
million (10 lakh).
• Guidelines on recycling and
reuse of C&D waste by CPWD
March 2014
02 03
• C & D waste management rules
2016 of MoEF&CC notified on
29th March, 2016 •
• Guidelines of environmental
management of C & D waste
CPCB (2017)
• Guidelines of utilization of C & D
waste in construction of dwelling units
and other infrastructure in housing
schemes of government (2016) by
Building Materials & Technology
Promotion Council (BMTPC).
Don’t throwyour future away!
19
21. • Absence of segregation of waste at source.
• Lack of appropriately located recycling
facilities.
• Indifferent attitude of citizens toward waste
management due to lack of awareness.
• Illegal landfill practices done by contractor
for saving money.
Reuse it or Lose it.

23. CASE STUDY
Maradu flats demolished
in 5 seconds with
implosion technology
Two out of four illegal residential
apartments in Kerala's Maradu were
demolished by the use of implosion
technology here on Saturday(11-
JAN-2020).
The buildings were razed for violating
the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ)
rules.
The directions in this regard were
passed by the Supreme Court last
year.
22
24. CONCLUSION
Anyway controlled
demolition of
building is
necessary to
ensure safety.
Type of demolition method
depends upon various
factors such as site
condition, type of structures,
age of building, height of
building & economy.
Explosive demolition is
the preferred method
for safely & efficiently
the larger structures.
Recycle your trash or trash your Earth.
