I was honored to be the Keynote speaker at the 2020 Institute of Social Change, an annual week-long focus on public scholarship and social change, organized by the Rackham Graduate School. Although we switched to an online format because of COVID-19, I liked how that allowed us to address different themes and try more than one format. The first hour was much like a normal keynote -- my talk, titled "Rethinking both “Public” and “Scholarship” in “Public Scholarship: (Ongoing) Lessons from the Detroit Water Stories Project" for 40 minutes and then 20 minutes of Q&A. For the second hour (after an hour-long lunch break), I proposed a more conversational format, without any slides, and we talked about a gadzillion topics -- academic and nonacademic career arcs, interdisciplinary research, specific tools and practices for research translation, how to be a good partner to grassroots organizations, the kind of support universities need to provide for effective public scholarship, and so on. I was grateful for the opportunity to reflect on our journey so far, and how we can further evolve to best assist the #WaterWarriors who are on the frontlines of this ongoing crisis. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has had a long history of innovation. Much too often, in fact, students would convert their dorms and apartments into laboratories of innovation and invention called "makerspaces". These workspaces for innovation are central to the institution’s legacy of research and development. Makerspaces are examples of MIT’s motto, “mens et manus” (mind and hand) at work. MIT is synonymous with innovation, and this rapidly growing ecosystem is another evolution of the university’s platform for research.." MIT's makerspaces are often categorized into three types: machine shops, project makerspaces, and community makerspaces. In the machine shop makerspaces, machinists oversee students developing complex systems. Students can seek project makerspaces to help them with class projects. In community makerspaces, students are not limited in the types of research they engage in while learning about safe maker practices.

Maker Mindset Facilitates Innovation at MIT

An educator, academic, and successful entrepreneur, Jean-Jacques Degroof has extensive experience in teaching about and building new ventures. A few years ago, Jean-Jacques Degroof launched with MIT's International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI) an edition of Global Startup Labs at the University of Louvain in Belgium. MIT has always been at the helm of innovation, producing some of the country’s best and brightest talent, and this year, the school was granted funding for research to study behavior on a nematode. The study’s researchers chose C. elegans because the system from which they emit and receive serotonin is comparable to that of mammals. Because of the complexities of the nervous system in mammals, researchers could not use mammals, but they instead chose this worm because the nematode's neurons can be precisely mapped out. Scientists can genetically control these cells including the five systems that regulate serotonin. Being able to regulate all of the neurons in the worm’s nervous system allows them to study the release of serotonin and how this affects behavior. The first two experiments will focus on how the brain uses serotonin to control behavior, and the third experiment planned will focus on how this behavior changes in complex environments.

Jean-Jacques Degroof is an accomplished entrepreneur and venture investor with experience teaching at leading European business schools. An alumnus of MIT Sloan School of Management, Jean-Jacques Degroof supports entrepreneurship and innovation at his alma mater. One of the innovative projects is being undertaken at MIT is by Carlo Ratti, a professor of architecture. Mr. Ratti is developing two-bed intensive care pods out of ordinary 20-foot long shipping containers to increase hospital bed capacity in cities around the world ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pods can be built for about $100,000, equipped with all relevant medical devices, a fraction of the cost of building an emergency prefabricated hospital. Mr. Ratti is working with a team of professionals from around the world to fast track the innovative solution. He has already received funding from UniCredit to build the prototype which will be deployed in Milan, Italy where the pandemic is straining health care systems. He will make the designs public so that teams around the world can use them to ramp up their healthcare capabilities. He is also in talks with automotive manufacturers to mass-produce the pods.

Jean-Jacques Degroof, PhD, is an accomplished financial industry executive and academic professional who engages in venture investment. Outside his work, Jean-Jacques Degroof supports the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a member of visiting committees and advisory boards. Moreover, he advances entrepreneurship and innovation at the school by sponsoring activities such as Hacking Arts, the 15K Creative Arts Competition, and an accelerator program. Since its founding in 1861, MIT has advanced knowledge in the fields of technology, science, and other areas of scholarship. The institution, which was originally founded to drive the United State’s industrial revolution, currently instructs over 11,500 students and and has a research budget of $773,901 million in 2019.. Recently, an MIT chemistry team led by associate professor Brad Pentelute began testing a drug candidate that held promise as a treatment for COVID-19. The drug, a peptide or short protein fragment, mimics proteins found on the surface of human cells. Initial research of the drug has shown it can disarm coronaviruses by binding to a viral protein that the virus uses to enter cells.
