This document provides instructions for an activity to simulate a convergent plate boundary where an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate. Students will study a diagram showing this collision and answer questions to understand the processes that occur. They will learn that the denser oceanic plate subducts under the continental plate, heating up and melting to form magma. This magma could erupt to form a volcanic mountain range on the continental plate above. As the plates continue pushing against each other over long periods, powerful earthquakes may take place at the boundary.

I. Objectives
After performing the activity, you should be able to:
1. Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
II. Procedures
1. Study Figure 10 showing a cross-sectional diagram of plates that are converging, and
answer the questions that follow.
III. Guide Questions:
1. What type of plate is Plate A? What about Plate B? Why do you say so?
2. Describe what happens to Plate A as it collides with Plate B? Why?
3. What do you think may happen to the leading edge of Plate A as it continues to move
downward? Why?
4. What do you call this molten material?
5. What is formed on top of Plate B?
6. As the plates continue to grind against each other, what other geologic event could
take place?
