6. GRASIM – PULP AND FIBRE
• Birla Cellulose products are sourced from the wood
from the company’s plantations. They have
implemented a 360 degree sustainability plan to
achieve their goals.
• Every employee is a Green Champion, contributing
daily towards energy conservation and social value
creation.
• They also participate in the Green Exchange,
where the company gives back to the environment
more than it takes.
7. INITIATIVES
• The company has installed solar power, fuel
cells and other energy efficient measures at
more than 700 sites, for the engery
requirements of the sites. This has resulted in
an average carbon reduction of 12
tons/year/site.
• The company has rolled out Mobile Switching
Centre Solarisation across sites to reduce
emissions and conserve energy.

11. IDEA CELLULAR - A BETTER IDEA
• The global telecom industry is rapidly becoming a significant
consumer of energy.
• Research suggests that the industry consumes energy equivalent to
160 billion kWh per year. That’s enough energy to power 16 million
homes, for a year.
• Idea alone consumed 1264 GWH grid power and 153 million litres
of diesel in FY13. That’s a fraction of the 2.2 billion litres that the
entire Indian telecom industry is expected to consume this year.
Idea realised that this was not feasible and took the lead in finding
sustainable solutions.

14. ULTRATECH CEMENT - GROWING
RESPONSIBLY
• UltraTech voluntarily joined the Cement
Sustainability Initiative (CSI), a part of the
World Business Council for Sustainable
Development, in 2006.
• This association has helped UltraTech gain
access to the best practices in the cement
industry and benchmark its own sustainability
practices against those of global players.
15. INITIATIVES
• Pioneered the use of alternative fuels such (rice, husk, rubber tire
chips, etc.) in the cement manufacturing process in India
• Achieved sustained reduction in the water footprint, with all
integrated plants maintaining zero water discharge
• Catered to more than 30% of water requirement through rain water
harvesting, and another 30% by recycling water
• Engaged with DuPont for the last three years to improve safety
performance, both in operating plants and in the projects
• Set up a Municipal Solid Waste processing plant in Jaipur,
converting it to Refuse Derived Fuel
• Identified power generation potential through Waste Heat Recovery
(WHR) of 90 MW for our units and are in the process of
implementing WHR systems for all our units in a phased manner

17. NOVELIS
• Over the past two years, Novelis has developed and begun to
implement an unprecedented Sustainability Commitment – to its
customers, its employees and the world at large.
• The company appointed its first Chief Sustainability Officer in 2011,
followed by the announcement of its goal to increase its use of
recycled aluminum from 33 percent to 80 percent by 2020.
• By FY13, the company had already reached 43 percent recycled
content.
• The company also has a Sustainability Advisory Council, which is
made up of well-respected external experts in the sustainability
field who collectively offer Novelis a wealth of knowledge,
experience and perspectives.

company in everything it does: from designing and
operating plants to engaging with employees and
stakeholders.

carbon black manufacturing process, minimizing the
company’s carbon footprint and making valuable

investments in Environment Management
Systems to ensure sustainable operations.
• Its ongoing greenfield and brownfield
expansions have planned state-of-the-art
environment protection systems and facilitate,
to ensure responsible growth.

• Enhancing material efficiency and process/equipment productivity,
backed by pollution prevention practices, as well as adoption of
cleaner technologies for brownfield projects
• Conserving resources, minimizing and recycling wastes, with
systematic collection of scrap, which is then subjected to safe
storage/disposal and re-use
• Implementing the ‘zero-discharge’ concept, putting up state-of-the-
art facilities to increase processing, reuse and recycling of waste
water
• Reclaiming mined-out land systematically by laying topsoil and
using this land for afforestation or agriculture
• Controlling emissions through dry scrubbing and electrostatic
precipitators, and discharges through effluent treatment plants
• Greening of red mud waste ponds using a unique bio-treatment
