5. Global Sustainability Practices
Prysmian Group
• “G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines” defined in 2013 by the GRI – Global Reporting
Initiative was adopted for the first time in 2014 and is consistent with it
• Prysmian Purchasing Professional Academy, the training program dedicated to
purchasing matters, will include a new chapter dedicated to examining the importance
of sustainability considerations
• Fibre division will noticeably reduce the number of air journeys between North America
and Europe, with a view to reducing the carbon footprint of the Group
• BB-XS technology fibre; a new cable was also developed and certified using "Gel" and
"Gel Free" technology, with a low environmental impact thanks to its reduced diameter
and lighter weight
• Innovations were made that uses recycled materials efficiently so that Company is
drives towards its sustainability agenda (eg. P-Laser technology)
• Group participated, 2015, in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which seeks to
contribute to the pursuit of the objectives agreed in the Kyoto Protocol regarding the
global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

General Cable
• General Cable is committed to operating its business and facilities in a way that reduces their impact on the
environment
• Recycling and conservation plans in place to reduce, reuse and recycle the materials we use to manufacture and deliver
our wire and cable products
• Globally Recycled Copper: 17315 Met. Tons
• Globally Recycled Aluminum: 20083 Met. Tons
• Globally Recycled Other Items: 15582 Met. Tons (paper, cardboard, shrink-wrap, empty cans, scrap wire jacketing)
• ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard for an effective Environmental Management System and 21/52 plants
of General Cable have this certification
• Moving from Land to Waterways to decrease fuel consumption and reduce Carbon Footprint
• Recycling of cable reels and cardboard found within the company's Cuernavaca plant into create furniture and décor, an
idea generated from Sustainability Thinking Workshop that are conducted in the company to educate its employees
regarding sustainability
7. Global Sustainability Practices
Nexans
• Nexans’ environmental management system is in line with ISO 14001 and is based on the
assessment of industrial risks, a continuous improvement program and employee training
courses on environmental best practices
• Environmental audits are conducted by Nexans’ Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
department on each site at least once every three years
• Adapted to Nexans’ operations, the EHP label (Environnement Hautement Protégé or Highly
Protected Environment) is awarded to sites that meet the Group’s excellence environmental
criteria. Obtaining label implies:
• To recycle at least half of the cooling water
• To control the quality of all effluents
• Not to store hazardous liquids without appropriate protection
• To no longer possess PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) on site
• To adopt a waste sorting policy
• To have an environmental crisis management plan
• Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used to determine the environmental impact of a product, and
then can be redesigned to have a minimum impact on the environment over their entire lifecycle
• Energy efficiency in plants, Reducing material consumption, Logistics optimization and Internal
Recycling are also major segments where Nexans is putting considerable efforts for Sustainability

It intends to ensure sustainability in coming up with specific products for solar and wind related applications.
It is also thinking of developing some unique environment friendly products for the house wires segment.

Sterlite also gives specific importance to sustainable development processes which encompasses environmental
protection, resource repletion, health and empowerment through education, working in partnership with credible
non-profit organizations on a wide spectrum of related projects.
KEI Industries Ltd.
As a part of the CSR activities, KEI focuses primarily on education and healthcare services, which are necessary in
promoting sustainable human development and economic growth.
Also, KEI is making donation to ISKCON food relief foundation towards their mid-day meals project.

They have proper management systems in place that help them adhere to standards on health, safety and
environment.
They also ensure energy conservation at all plant locations.
They have rain water harvesting facilities at all locations in order to maintain the balance of natural resource like
water.
They also adopted the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) - the European standard for green
manufacturing and several energy saving initiatives were put in place to increase its green quotient.
All old equipment were replaced with energy efficient equipment.
Variable frequency drives based motors were installed to save energy.
Biofuels are being used as well.

The Company has carried out R&D majorly in development of specialty elastomeric, XLPE, foam compounds for
electron beam irradiation, recycling of PTFE scrap, thin wall automotive wires, PVC building wires, pressure tight
cables, hybrid rubber cables with integrated fibre optics, tactical fibre optics, and electron beam irradiated solar
and windmill cables, heavy and low tow cables for Indian Navy etc.
12. Sustainability Trends in Indian Cable Industry
V-Guard Industries Ltd.
The key focus of the R&D is to develop customer & environment friendly electrical and electronic products.
The R&D team also extends its knowhow on manufacturing processes and systems to improve efficiencies in the
manufacturing ecosystem.
AKSH Optifibre Ltd.
The company has undertaken to plant 10,000 trees in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan under the aegis of RIICO and the
Industrial association of Bhiwadi.
13. Comparison between Indian and Global Firms
• Indian firms although active in sustainability practices, only gained impetus
post Companies Act, 2013
• More emphasis given to rural India, particularly in developing electrical
solutions suited to them.
• Global brands , being cash rich, however have focused more on
environment and invested heavily in developing greener solutions.
• Recycling is a focus given more in Global firms than in Indian ones.
• Solutions in India are more localized to the country. However that is not
the case for Global firms.
• G4 Sustainability reporting guidelines are a norm in Global firms and not so
much in the Indian ones
