• Environment is a focus area within the group’s overall
CSR matrix. A host of Tata companies also adhere to
environmental procedures drawn up by the Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI), which operates under the aegis
of the United Nations.

3. Company Initiatives
 It works on projects that include repairing green cover,
reducing effluents and emissions, maintain local
ecologies and improving long term corporate
sustainability,by choice and conviction
 Understanding that no environment policy can operate
in isolation - that benefits both nature and those
dependent on it.

 different Tata companies - around their areas of
operation
 the philanthropic thrust of the Tata trusts
 Support for endeavours to conserve plant and animal
species, improve land and water use, and green sanctuaries
 watershed programs and land regeneration to forestry
projects and the protection of endangered species.

 One Tata project that brought together Tata Group companies
(TCS, Titan Industries and Tata Chemicals) was developing a
compact, in-home water-purification device. It was called
“Tata swach” which means "clean" in Hindi and would cost
less than 1000 rupees (US$21).
 The idea of “Tata swach” was thought of from the 2004
tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which left thousands of people
without clean drinking water. This device has filters that last
about a year long for a family of five. It is a low-cost product
available for people who have no access to safe drinking water
in their homes.The advantage of this device is that it does not
require the use of electricity

8. The climate change initiatives
• Actions taken on climate change must be concerted,
structured and sustainable. It must target the rising carbon
emissions and work towards the dual objective of reducing the
greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere and
reviving nature’s ability to heal itself.

9.  An overall change in organisational behaviour is being
sought through the Tata Code of Conduct 2008.
 This is being backed up by the climate change initiative
that will be run through Tata Quality Management
Services (TQMS), which will support the companies in
their attack on global warming.
• Tata Steel recycles more than 80 per cent of the waste
generated and the rest is despatched into safe landfills.

• At Tata Chemicals, water recycling processes and sewage treatment
facilities have cut down the dependence on fresh water. It also
invests time and resources in saving the whale shark.
• Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, Tata Power, Tata Sponge,
and Tata Metaliks have registered projects under the Clean
Development Mechanism:

1. Waste heat recovery power generation
2. Super critical technology for power generation
3. Fuel switch

5. Energy efficiency improvements
6. Setting up of renewable energy power generation farms
using wind, solar, etc.
• Tata Tea safeguards the rich and diverse flora and fauna around
its estates in Munnar, Kerala. The company has also taken on the
challenge of protecting the 97 square kilometre Eravikulam
National Park.
• Prevent the wasteful use of natural resources and improve the
environment, particularly with regard to the emission of
greenhouse gases.

• Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has committed to building green offices;
its buildings will be rated by LEED or the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design.
• In 1964, the company took over 800 acres of rocky and wasteland close to
the Pune campus and converted it into a mini forest.

• The steps adopted by Tata group on mitigation activities
 As a first step, the group has decided to assess and benchmark its
global carbon footprint and work towards its subsequent phased
reduction.
o For that 2 external consultants, Ernst & Young and McKinsey &
Company have been appointed.
o Ernst & Young will measure the current carbon footprint and
extrapolate the futuristic carbon footprint
o McKinsey & Company will help the companies establish cost
abatement curves and develop high level mitigation strategies.
 In the second phase, it will be extended to minor processes through
intensive awareness and training programmes for all stakeholders,
identification of climate change champions and a group policy on
green buildings.

• Jaguar Land Rover has embraced carbon dioxide offsetting as a
central component of its overall strategy to manage and reduce
carbon emissions.

• Tata steel has undertaken initiatives to reduce its environmental
impact on multiple funds by providing a central online resources for
employees provides useful information about the steps that can be
taken to save energy and cut emissions at home and at workplace.
• It provides on and off shore wind turbines and tidal energy
generators which helps to generate renewable carbon free energy.
• Across the Tata group, new initiatives were taken in terms of
developing abatement strategies and climate change policies by
increasing awareness and determining best practices.

Tata Steel has set global benchmarks in environment conservation
by incorporating best available technologies within its extensive
conservation initiatives.
• Energy conservation
 Tata Steel ensures energy conservation primarily through use of
energy efficient technologies and processes that enable higher
energy reduction and efficiency

Tata Steel is committed to conserving these
non-renewable raw materials and it also uses
innovative ore beneficiation and extraction
techniques to ensure efficient mining of raw
materials.
