Documentary Research
Evaluation
Before starting to film and edit the documentary I decided to research into different types of documentaries and their
different codes and conventions. I wanted to see what types of documentaries I could create about the culture of the
digital age, and which one would be the most suitable for my documentary. I initially wanted to create an expository
documentary as I believed that was the best way of documentary and the most engaging with my documentary.
I knew what was the most suitable for the documentary due to the fact I did a lot of research into the audience of BBC but
also the target audience that the BBC wanted me to research and attract as they are the audience, they wanted me
to aim m documentary at. I did lots of research into the target audience of the BBC but also it to the Client as well as I
wanted to see what type of corporation they were and what type of message they give out their audience. I looked at their
own documentaries they created and others from different streaming platforms to see if there was any difference but also
to see what type of documentary, I should create in order to gain the interest of the target audience and how I would be
able to achieve this goal.

Client and Audience Research
Documentary Research
This research has allowed me to understand what type of documentary I need to create in order to gain the interest of the audience
but also what types of codes and conventions I should and should not follow in order to keep my audience's attention.
Documentary Evaluation
Codes and
Conventions
For the codes and conventions of a documentary, I decided that I wanted to follow the structure in place of the
codes and conventions of a documentary films in order to create a full informational documentary but without some
codes and conventions in order to create a more engaging documentary for the audience. Codes and convention
are not something I had to follow but I wanted to have some structure to follow to create my first documentary.
Why have I followed codes and
conventions?
Why didn’t I follow codes and
convention?
I followed the typical codes and conventions of a
documentary as I wished to create an engaging
environment for the audience but also to create an
informational one with opinioned based information. I
wanted to structure the documentary as the
documentary as an expository documentary so I could
voice overs and have more of an emotional effect on the
audience and gain more of a reaction from them.
I didn’t follow the typical codes and conventions as I wanted to
create a documentary which had many different types of style
and conventions of documentaries. As different types of
documentaries have different conventions a combination of
different type of documentary styles change that. I wanted to
challenge the codes and convention to give my audience a
different type of documentary, so they are more engage and it
doesn’t have the typical conventions of a documentary.
20XX Documentary Evaluation 3
Evaluation Of Documentary Final Edit
For my own evaluation of the documentary, I have been asked to create ,I
am very happy with the end product. As I have worked very hard from the
beginning of the research on target audiences, the client, the codes and
convention to production paperwork, scripting and creative planning to finally
editing and publishing the finished documentary.
Throughout the process of the research and planning to the actually filming
and editing of the documentary I knew that they will be many negatives and
positives about my documentary as I knew I am not the most knowledgeable
person to use premier pro and very knew to it, but I am proud of the outcome
and the effort I have put into experimenting with different ways of editing.
The documentary has many flaws and imperfection such as certain
editing transitions or audio issues and I know for my resubmission I should
improve them or fix them to prove that I can create a better documentary and
show the improvement of the editing skills I have.
20XX 4
Documentary Evaluation
Positives & Negatives
Positives of Documentary
• One positive of the documentary is that my editing skills have
decently improved with creating my documentary as my time
using premier pro was not as well edited and needed a lot of
improvement.
• Another positive with my documentary is my own footage
I used in the documentary, I has very happy with how many of
the clips and interview turned out very well due to my
composition of the shoots.
• Another positive is the audio of the interview, as at the
beginning it was very loud and had a constant buzzing and
humming noise in background due to a fan but I was able to
edit it so there was barely any humming, and the interviewees
voice was very clear.
Negatives of Documentary
• A negative of the documentary is that there is too much
stock footage, as there was a time restraint, and many
things were pushed back to availability and I was not
able to get the footage I wanted.
• Another negative is that there are part of the
documentary I left quiet with only the background music
as I wanted to have a voice over but to not having
access to the studio did not allow me to complete those
parts.
• Another negative is that I believed I could have found a
better background music for the documentary but due to
the time restraints I was not able to look more deeply for
a better one.
