LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners
are expected to:
1. define the nine disciplines of Social
Sciences; and
2. identify the natures and functions of
each disciplines
SOCIAL SCIENCE
• It is concerned about society. It aims at understanding all aspects of
society as when as finding solutions to deal with social problems. It is a
broad area of knowledge and includes several different disciplines under
its domain.
• The social sciences have a critical contribution to make, in helping us
understand, imagine, and craft a more sustainable future for all.” –
UNESCO
Different Social Science
Disciplines
1. Anthropology
Derived from the
“Anthropos” meaning
Greek
human,
words
and
“logos” meaning word or study of.
Anthropologist attempt to find answers on
so many questions involving humans.

Study of human biology/
analyze human fossil
remains.
Study of earlier cultures

2. Economics
from the Greek word “oikos”
house and “nomos” meaning
Derived
meaning
custom or law. The term “oikonomia”
means management of a household.
Study of production, distribution and
consumption of goods and services.
3. Geography
Derived from the Greek word
“geographia”, from geo meaning earth
and “graphe” meaning to describe.
Literally means to describe the earth.
Study of the features of the earth and the
location of living things on the planet.

From the perspective of earth
sciences. It includes the
study of soil, landforms,
water, minerals, climate.
Focuses on the human
aspect of geography that is
marked by a strong
commitment to the concept
of culture.
4. History
Derived from the Greek word “historia”
meaning inquiry.
Historians will unfold, discover, and
interpret human thoughts and actions
that are ever changing.
Historians have also tried to be
scientific in their methods of writing
historical accounts or historiography.
5. Political Science “politika, polis”
Study of politics, government and the
need for the institution, its form and its
processes.
Political scientists deal with both
theory and practices of politics, including
the analysis on public policies.
6. Sociology
Derived from the
meaning companion
Greek
and
word
“logos”
“socious”
meaning
study of.
It is the science of society.
Sociologist attempt to unravel patterns in group
behavior and not on specific expressions of
individual being.
7. Psychology
Derived from the Latin word “psychologia”
combining “psyche” meaning mind, spirit or
soul, and “logos” for study of.
From the social sciences, it obtains
information about the social world such as
motivation, emotions, behavior and attitude.
It has 4 main goals: describe, explain, predict
and change behavior.
8. Demography
Derived from the word “demos” meaning
people and “graphein” meaning is
description.
Is the statistical study of human populations,
especially with reference to size and density,
distribution, and vital statistics (births,
marriages, deaths, etc.).
9. Linguistics
Derived from the word “lingua” meaning
tongue.
the scientific study of language and its
structure, including the study of morphology,
syntax, phonetics, phonology and semantics
