WHAT IS MODIFIER?
I’m reading.
I’m reading a book.
I’m reading a story book.
I’m minutely reading a story book.
I’m minutely reading a story book, “Tarzan”.
DEFINITION
Kamla Version: Anything that modifies something is called modifier.
Chatur Version: In grammar, a modifier is an optional element in phrase structure
or clause structure. A modifier is so called because it is said to modify (change
the meaning of) another element in the structure, on which it is dependent.
Typically the modifier can be removed without affecting the grammar of the
sentence.
Rancho Version: A modifier is a word or phrase that adds information about
another word or phrase.
TYPES OF MODIFIER

AMBIGUOUS (SQUINTING) MODIFIER:
A SQUINTING MODIFIER IS A MISPLACED MODIFIER THAT, BECAUSE OF ITS
LOCATION IN A SENTENCE, COULD MODIFY EITHER THE PHRASE THAT
IT OR THE ONE THAT FOLLOWS IT.
Misplaced Modifier
A misplaced modifier is a
word, phrase, or clause that
is improperly separated
from the word it modifies /
describes.
Dangling Modifier
A dangling modifier is a
word or phrase that
modifies a word not clearly
stated in the sentence.
DANGLING MODIFIER
Ex: After camping in the forest, the city feels cold
and mechanical.
Explanation: “After camping in the forest” is an
adverbial phrase that incorrectly modifies “the city
feels cold and mechanical.” The city cannot camp in
the forest. This is a dangling modifier because the
speaker (the pronoun that should be modified), isn’t
included.
Cor: After camping in the forest, I feel like the city
is cold and mechanical.
MISPLACED MODIFIER
Ex: The child ate a cold dish of cereal
for breakfast this morning.
Explanation: Why depending on your
teacher always, draw your own!
Cor: The child ate a dish of cold cereal
for breakfast this morning.
AMBIGUOUS MODIFIER
Ex. Explaining the argument clearly
improves your chance of success.
Explanation: Here, “clearly” might modify
either improving the chances of success or
explaining the argument.
Cor: Explaining the argument clearly will
improve your chance of success.
