2. Purpose of Maccabees
◦ 1 and 2 Maccabees have different understandings of why the
Maccabean revolt succeeded.
◦ 1 Maccabees emphasizes the zealous killing of sinners as the
element that wins God’s favor
◦ 2 Maccabees emphasizes the tragic death of the righteous
Jewish martyrs as bringing about God’s mercy and
compassion
3. Theological Purpose of Maccabees
◦ It resonated with Roman-era Christians and medieval Christians were it stories of martyrology
and the resurrection of the deed in its stories of Eleazar and the woman with seven sons.

◦ The Books of Maccabean refers to a series of deuterocanonical books which are
contained in various canons of the bible.
◦ It is originally written in Hebrew and only surviving in a Greek translation.
◦ It contains an account of history of the Maccabees from 175 BC until 134 BC
◦ It is the struggles of the Jews in the second century BC against the political
domination of the Syrians
6. Intended Audience
The first two books are considered canonical by the catholic church and the first
three books are considered canonical by the Eastern Orthodox Church.The Georgian
Orthodox Church is the only church which also considers biblical apocrypha.
◦ The book covers the whole of the revolt,from 175 BC to 134 BC.
◦ It highlights how the salvation of the Jewish people in the crisis came through
