Dark horse analysis
1.
2. The characters are situated in a dark
room where the only light is natural,
coming from windows behind them.
This creates a dark ambience which is
common for representing the genre of
rock music. They are also wearing dark
clothing which supports this
representation. Because there
characters are lit from behind, a
shadow is cast upon their faces
causing them to look more
intimidating. The stance of the
characters also emphasises on the
intimidating feeling.
3. The back cover features the band using direct address
and stood in an intimidating stance. This, with the dark
strange setting, creates a narrative enigma as we don’t
know why they are in this setting.
Behind the band is a mattress-like object that suggests
that someone has stayed the night behind them. This
shows that there could be a dark story behind the
image for example; a kidnapping or hiding from
someone, taking into account the title of the album
dark horse as well.
4. Iconography
The dark colours- iconic of the rock/metal genre.
Font style of the album is bold and weathered a little this
portrays the proud but rough style of the genre.
The metal style of the belt buckle can represent the cold
strong feeling of the rock/metal genre.
5. Setting
The main setting of the digipak is on
the back cover. The band is seen in
some kind of abandoned church all
looking forward with direct address
because of this the viewer gets quite
an intimidated feeling. The use of a
church for the setting creates an
eerie feeling as it is commonly
associated with death and the horror
genre. The setting also frames the
characters through the windows and
arched ceiling making them appear
more dominant letting the audience
know they are the artist that are
releasing the album. The dark room
with the only light is natural, coming
from windows behind the band
creates a dark ambience which is
common for representing the genre
of rock music.
6. Technical and audio codes
Throughout all of the digipak low key lighting is used this
symbolises the darkness within the music portraying the
rock genre.
The back cover of the digipak is only lit from the back
with natural light, this gives the image a sense of realism.
As well as realism, the way in which the band has been
lit from behind conveys the band as more menacing as
we can not see their faces. They are also dressed in black
making them appear more like silhouettes than people.
The digipak follows the genre of rock by having a bold
but worn down font style for the title this is very
common with the rock genre as it is seen as a strong
rugged style of music.
