1. Evaluation of my final production
To reflect upon the magazine pages I had created and how they were in keeping with or
challenging the conventions of the magazines I've studied, I answered the following 7
questions to see how my product would work within the real industry
2.
3.
4.
5. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Question1
My media product uses the
forms and conventions of real
media products as:
Masthead remains one of
the most prominent
features of the front cover,
it is placed in the top left
corner. Similar placements
are seen in NME, CLASH,
SPIN and Rolling Stone
A single photo is used on
the front cover and takes
up the entirety of the page.
None of the magazines I
looked at featured more
than one photo on the
cover and so my cover is in
keeping with this trend.
A barcode, date and price
are on the front cover in a
small font in the bottom
corner, all magazines I
studied feature these
details and they are always
in a similar placement
My media product challenges the
forms and conventions of real
media products by:
Having such a minimalist
front cover. Although not
unseen before (Amy
Winehouse's NME cover) it is
not very common among the
magazines I have studied
which tend to favour a
busier look. However as with
the NME cover I felt the
photo was of such good
quality and nature that to
obscure it with lots of text
would detract from it's
quality.
6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Question1
The page features both text
and images, this is seen in
every contents page of the
magazines I have studied as it
makes it more interesting to
look at
There are contact details for
the magazine located on the
page, I featured a Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram contact
alongside the networking sites
respective logos which I
placed in the top corner,
many of the magazines I
studied kept these details
small and in a corner.
My media product uses the
forms and conventions of real
media products as:
My media product challenges the
forms and conventions of real
media products as:
An editors note features at
the bottom, although not
common in the music
magazines I have studied
it is common among
fashion magazines like
Vogue and ELLE and as
my magazine encompasses
style alongside music I felt
it was fitting to add
While the contents are in
column form, my text
makes up a singular
column that fits to the
background image of the
arms by curving the text to
fit, instead of being in
straight multiple columns.
I wanted my magazine to
have an artistic quirky
touch to represent my
audience and having the
contents laid out as such
helps to achieve this.
7. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Question1
The page is
effectively split in
two with text
taking up the left
hand side and an
image on the
right, this is
commonplace in
all of the
magazines I have
studied,
particularly NME,
Billboard and
CLASH
There is a
heading and
tagline to the
interview- I styled
this similarly to
Rolling Stone’s
spread featuring
Adele
My media product
uses the forms and
conventions of real
media products as:
There is a quote from the interview that is placed in the middle of the text to break up the
columns, the text is wrapped around the quote to form a bubble. This is is seen in all
magazines I have studied at some point and helps to engage the reader with the text.
I have backed my text onto a partially transparent B that covers the whole page. This is
seen in many magazines but is a frequent feature of style magazine “Q” I felt this would
lend to the stylistic approach I wanted for my magazine
My media product
challenges the forms
and conventions of real
media products as:
The colour scheme
of the page is
simple black and
white with colour
added by the photo.
I chose to do this as
I felt it helped
contribute to the
artistic and
minimalist style I
wanted. This is
commonly seen in
style magazines like
Vogue and ELLE
8. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
My target audience:
Young adults between age15-30
Both genders (equal split)
Interested in the “indie” music genre
Interested in fashion
Interested in culture
Middle/upper class with disposable income
Eager to use online outlets such as websites and social media
Question2
9. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Artist is young and
within the age of my
target audience,
helping to represent
them, he is dressed in
ordinary clothing
unlike many artists on
magazine covers,
helping him to better
represent the readers.
The cover artist is male
and this helps to
combat the
underrepresentation of
men on magazine
covers. Men make up
2/5 of magazine covers
in circulation currently
(2017) and women 3/5.
This helps my
magazine appeal to
both genders as it is
working to combat the
imbalance in the
industry
Question2
The minimalist style of
the cover helps to
convey a luxurious
element to the
magazine. The lack of
clutter and the clean
image imply a level of
status and wealth, this
is helped by the
simplistic yet elegant
black and white colour
scheme. Such colour
schemes are often seen
in high end fashion
magazines like Vogue
and this helps to bring
together the fashion
and music elements of
my magazine and
represent the
middle/upper class
with the sense of style
that are part of my
target audience.
10. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
The images I have
chosen to use within my
contents help to appeal
to the cultural interests
of my target audience, I
chose to add a feature
on an Indian festival
and was able to source
a stunning colourful
photo which would draw
in readers to find out
about it and it would
represent Indian
readers. I also included
a photo I took in London
of the street art. I feel
this would also help to
contribute to the
cultural element of my
magazine as it is about
the city and the fashion
within it helping to
represent those who live
there
Question2
The social media icons
help to represent the
modern young adults who
make such frequent use of
the internet and social
media. Having these icons
AND the website link on
the front cover suggest
that my magazine is
available online to cater to
the needs of the younger
generation that are often
on the move and use the
internet as a means of
consuming information.
The layout of the
magazine is very artistic
and unconventional,
much like my target
audience. I feel it also has
a luxury look to it as it
isn’t cluttered and the font
is elegant, this helps to
represent the luxury
consumer of my target
audience
11. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
The elegant
and stylish
black and
white colour
scheme
helps to
create the
luxury look
that
represents
the luxury
consumers
of my target
audience
Question2
The photo
depicting the
young man
with an arm
across his
chest helps to
represent the
young people
in my target
audience. The
subtle sexual
tone of the
photo
represents the
nature of
today’s society
in which
expression of
love and
emotion is
commonplace.
12. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Media institution:
“A media conglomerate, group, or institution is a company that owns
numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises, such as television,
radio, publishing, motion pictures, theme parks, or the Internet.” – Wikipedia
(A media institution is a business that distributes media products)
The media institutions distributing the magazines I have studied are:
IPC Media (NME)
Jann S. Wenner (Rolling Stone)
Republic of Music ltd. (CLASH)
Buzz Media (SPIN)
Prometheus Global Media (Billboard)
Conde Nast Publications (Vogue)
Question3
I am going to investigate these media institutions to find out what else they
distribute and whether they would consider distributing my magazine
13. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
One of the leading media institutions within the UK
Publications include – NME magazine, Guitar & Bass magazine
A well known publisher – 26 million adults in the UK read a magazine published
by IPC
A well known and large company that are able to provide more advertisement
opportunities due to their status.
Question3
IPC Media
Why would IPC Media be interested in my magazine?
As I based my magazine on an issue of NME (the Amy Winehouse issue) The two
magazines have a similar target audience and I feel this would be something they
could capitalise on through their advertising capabilities. I think the added style
and fashion element of my magazine would help to fill a gap in their audience and
by publishing my magazine they would help their brand become more influential
with larger readership figures
NME’s audience is predominantly male (69% - see demographics research) and my
magazine is intended to appeal equally to both genders, this means my magazine
would help to bring up female readership.
14. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Jann Simon Wenner is the co-founder and publisher of Rolling Stone magazine
Owns Men’s Journal Magazine
An incredibly influential figure in the media and publishing industry
Question3
Jann S. Wenner
Rolling Stone has a similar audience as my target audience. The magazines are
similar in style and content making it easier to distribute as they already have the
following who would be interested in the slightly different aspects of my magazine
Their audience is largely varied, readers are predominantly male at 61.7% and the
median age is 35 (see Demographics research) meaning their audience are both
ends of the age spectrum, if anything leaning towards older generations. My
magazine is directed at younger people and both genders equally. Publishing my
magazine would enable Wenner to establish an even greater influence in the print
media industry, connecting with all different age groups and genders. It could also
be beneficial in terms of advertising as the magazines (My own, Rolling Stone and
Men’s Journal) could be used to advertise each other.
Why would Jann S. Wenner be interested in my magazine?
15. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Question3
Republic of Music ltd.
A small distribution company based in Brighton
Their work is largely focused on music distribution but is involved in the
distribution of CLASH magazine
Their alternative method of distribution (small scale) attracts a niche audience
similar to my target audience
The audience of CLASH are similar to my target audience and perhaps the brand
would be looking to further their presence in the print media publishing industry
and releasing a magazine similar to one they already have in circulation but
slightly differing in terms of interests (the fashion element) would help them to
slowly but surely expand their influence.
The types of music artists they work with are similar to the types of artist I would
want to feature in my magazine, having this overlap of genre across the two media
formats would enable them to exploit the connection for advertisement benefits
which would further the success and profit of both their artists music and the
magazine
Why would Republic of Music be interested in my magazine?
16. SPIN’s lack of a consistent genre means it is without a specific constant audience,
affecting their readership levels as not all readers will read all issues. The genre
specific nature of my magazine would help to attract a audience following
Their online presence could be beneficial to my magazine as it would easily work
into the lives of the technology dependant, ever on the move younger generation
that are my target audience. My magazine would add to their publications list
which currently only consists of SPIN and thus would generate more interest in the
online magazine platform.
If the distributor decided to go back into print publishing with my magazine they
would benefit largely and become a competitor in the industry again helping to
generate more interest around the company and their productions
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Best known for it’s distribution of SPIN magazine Buzz
media is now an online company after having ceased
all print publications in 2012. It now distributes online
magazines only
Their best known publication has no specific genre and
tends to skip between genres (eg. Rock, Pop, Rap, Country etc)
Question3
Buzz Media
Why would Buzz Media be interested in my magazine?
17. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
One of the leading distributors in the USA, it’s
publications include Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter,
Back Stage and Film Journal International
A holding company with many different media outlets to maximise advertisement
opportunities
They host the Billboard Music Awards and the CLIO awards
Distributes in the USA and occasionally Japan and Brazil
Question3
Prometheus Global Media
Why would Prometheus Global Media be interested in my magazine?
As a company producing a multitude of different genres of magazine they have yet
to publish a magazine with any relation to fashion at all. My magazine
encompasses fashion and music and would fill a gap in their market helping to
expand their already colossal influence
Being an American company that also distributes in Japan and Brazil there is the
opportunity to have my magazine in circulation in different countries to maximize
it’s potential audience
Hosting the awards ceremonies would be prime advertisement time for a new
magazine similar to Billboard.
18. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Largely aimed at the higher end of the market,
titles such as Vogue, GQ and Condé Nast Traveller are known as glossies are aimed at those
on a higher income
They are also behind slightly more mass market aimed magazines like Heat and Now
Conde Nast is an international distributor meaning there would be many opportunities to
distribute worldwide. They produce many different versions of Vogue for different countries
and perhaps this could be done with my magazine in the future should it be successful enough
Question3
Conde Nast Publications
Why would Conde Nast Publications be interested in my magazine?
I feel that the luxury quality of my magazine would qualify it as a “glossy” and the
fact that it encompasses music and fashion would help to fill a gap in their market
as no magazine of theirs has both genres.
Conde Nast’s status as a high end distributor would help to place my magazine
alongside the more top end magazines like Vogue and GQ just with a music element.
It’s readers know the publisher and to see it’s name on my magazine would entice
readers of their existing publications
Many international distribution opportunities with the possibility of several versions
of my magazine being published depending on it’s success.
19. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Question4
My target audience:
Young adults between age15-30
Both genders (equal split)
Interested in the “indie” music genre
Interested in fashion
Interested in culture
Middle/upper class with disposable income
Eager to use online outlets such as websites and social media
I feel that most readership of my magazine would come from this demographic
of people due to it’s genre and contents (the fashion element) and I have made
a conscious effort to have an equal split of accredited artists, bloggers and
writers on my contents page.
My magazine has a similar readership profile to NME with an average age of
24 similar to my own. However the gender split is much wider with 69% male
and 31% female hence why I have made efforts to appeal to both.
20. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
To reflect the non gender specific appeal of my magazine and attract such an
audience I used a simple black and white classy colour scheme and avoided using
any gender specific colours.
21. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
Editing my images was
crucial for appealing to
my target audience. I
used Photoshop to alter
the contrast and colour
levels and used the
sharpen tool. This
helped to make the
images more appealing,
attractive realistic,
attracting the reader
from the shelves.
The upped contrast
draws attention to the
colourful dots which
would entice the reader
out of curiosity into
purchasing the
magazine. It also
attracts attention to the
casual clothing he’s
wearing allowing them
to perceive him in a
similar way they
perceive themselves
22. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
I edited my double page spread and
contents photos in the same way, by
altering the contrast and colour levels.
23. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
Front Cover
Because of the
quality of the photo
I felt as though it
would attract the
audience best if I
kept a minimalistic
style with a black
and white colour
scheme so as not
to detract from the
photo. This draws
attention and
attracts potential
readers as the
image is so
striking. The
coloured dots also
draw attention as
they would make
the reader curious.
24. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
Contents
The social media icons in the top
left would attract an online
audience as it shows that my
magazine is available to them on
an online platform that my on the
move, young target audience who
are ever moving towards online
media consumption would find
interesting and convenient
The image I created on Photoshop
that I backed my contents on to
would attract the audience as it is
unusual and striking and the sort
of thing that my target audience
would find appealing. The arms
also appear to be reaching out to
the left, encouraging the reader to
turn the page and read on
I used attractive language to draw
in my reader “exclusive”
according to Barthes this creates
enigma and tension for the reader
who becomes excited to read the
content only available in my
magazine
The images I used on my
contents help to attract the
audience due to their colourful
vibrant nature. Particularly the
middle photo which would appeal
to the cultural interests of my
audience as the festival looks fun
and beautiful. The same goes for
the bottom image which would
attract international audiences as
it is about a city they may not
have been to and for people who
have it’s a familiar city and they
would be interested in seeing
what was written about it.
The style of writing would also
attract the audience as some
features are written in larger
fonts serving as a tagline to draw
readers in to particular articles.
Clear and simple layout for
readers to easily find what they
are looking for and there is
minimal text in order to maintain
the attention of the typically low
attention spans of the younger
audiences
25. How did you attract and address your audience?
Question5
Double Page Spread I used a “pull quote” that
entices the reader to read
the article through the
creation of hermeneutic
questions.
I had a large quote from
the artist in a titling font
with each word written in
bold and italics in terms
of the word that was
written. Underneath I had
the artists name written
in bold to attract
attention and make clear
who the article is about,
catching the attention of
any fans.
I used a bold and striking
image to attract attention.
The artist isn’t
conforming to the typical
image used on a double
page spread as he is not
in a direct mode of
address with the
audience. However I did
this intentionally as I felt
it created a sense of
mystery around the artist
I chose my language
carefully so as to connect
with my audience and
attract them. I used a short
phrase with bold strong
words as a tag line at the
top of the page making the
article more captivating and
keeping the readers
attention, something that is
important due to younger
people’s shorter attention
plan.
The content of my article
includes personal
information from the artist,
he shares his insecurities
about travelling on tour
and why he was inspired to
make music and this
establishes a closer
relationship between the
reader and artist and is an
example of negotiated or
preferred reading (reception
theory) based on the
reader.
As the artist appears young in the image he would
attract the younger audience, being the same age as
them. The article mentions his “international
success” and at such a young age the reader would
be compelled to find out more
The article also uses a lot of colloquial language and
short sentences, making it familiar to the audience
as it is similar to their own speech
26. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
The internet:
Blogger
YouTube
Facebook Messenger

Canon EOS 750D Camera
Lumix Lx 7 Camera
Adobe Photoshop Cs3
Microsoft Powerpoint
Technologies I have used in the process of researching, planning and
creating my magazine:
27. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
I used the internet for a substantial part of the research and planning of my magazine. It
helped me to research existing media products to establish the codes and conventions of
the type of magazine I was looking to create.
I frequently used YouTube to research tutorials on camera settings, camera shots and
lighting techniques alongside some informative websites.
YouTube was also incredibly useful when researching Photoshop techniques. There were
many helpful videos on editing and tools. However I also found these resources on web
pages.
I used Blogger to document the process of my production and found it to be very accessible
and simple to use as someone unfamiliar with blogging. It made editing posts simple and
nothing was permanent meaning if a mistake was made I could easily fix it.
I presented most of my work through posts on blogger as I felt this was the most
aesthetically pleasing and easily navigatable way to present my work
This evaluation however will be presented as a slideshare as I wanted to experiment at
least once with another format despite having found the most preferable method to me
I used Facebook messenger to arrange my photo shoot, it made organising dates and times
easier so I was able to have all my models and equipment in the same place at the same
time. I also used this platform to keep in contact with my focus group. The notifications
enabled me to quickly and efficiently respond to their requests for adaptations or changes

29. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
As a frequent user of PowerPoint I felt confident in my skills to use it for this
evaluation.
PowerPoint is easy to understand and navigate for viewers and it provides a clean
layout that is simple to read without having to be too wordy.
I can upload a PowerPoint to slideshare to share it on my blog. I found out how to first
turn it into a slideshare and then upload it to my blog by researching it and watching
some YouTube videos.
Slideshare makes viewing the PowerPoint on Blogger easy as you can just click to
change the slides back and forward
Microsoft PowerPoint and Slideshare
30. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
When lighting my images I used various pieces of photography equipment and digital
technology (Photoshop) and when not in a situation with these facilities available to
me I made use of the natural daylight and played with contrast and sharpness on
Photoshop
As the majority of my images were taken in the photography studios I had access to
many different lamps and lighting equipment. I decided to only the specialised
photography headlamp that had nine different bulbs I was able to interchange and
switch to create different effects with different bulbs lit. This lamp provided high key
lighting to my image as is done with real media products, making my own more
convincing.
When without access to these facilities, which wound up being only once when in
London, I took a photo of the street art in broad daylight at around 2pm and altered
the contrast, sharpness and colour levels to replicate the professional appearance of
the photo.
By using Photoshop to create lighting situations when the equipment was not available
I realised that although the lighting technologies (lamps and lights) are most preferable
and easy to create the desired effect with, this effect can also be achieved by other
means such as Photoshop
Lighting
31. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
I had little experience with this camera, but nowhere near enough to enable me to take
photos to the high quality and standard I needed to, because of this I researched
several aspects of it that would help me to do this (aperture, ISO and shutter speed) I
found several web pages and tutorials on this and made a blog post featuring the links
to the tutorials and pages.
For my final production I was largely reliant on this camera, save for one photo I took
with my iPhone camera, which was not as such good quality and had to be edited quite
a lot. Having good quality photos was essential to appealing to my target audience as
they needed to appear professional. The camera allowed me to quickly upload images
to a computer and work on them as and when I saw fit and the cameras ability to show
me previous photos on screen made adaptations easy and quick to make.
Canon 750D EOS Camera
32. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
Prior to my production I had used Photoshop maybe once or twice with little
achievement other than being able to make some basic skills. I understood however
that there would be more advanced skills essential to have in the making of my
magazine. As I thought of issues I may have had I researched tutorials and attempted
to learn some of these skills using an older photo prior to my production. I made a
blogger post on these processes
Photoshop
When I was in the process of creating my
production I was able to explore different
text fonts and colours and alter the
contrasts, colour levels and tones of the
photographs I was using to find the best
outcomes.
33. What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Question6
Ultimately different technologies played a quintessential role in my production, without
them it would have been virtually impossible as technology was a large proportion of
every element of my work.
I particularly used the internet when producing my research and planning as it was
the only way for me to access previous media works and their codes and conventions
alongside tutorials and important information.
Without the internet I would have been unable to learn the Photoshop skills I required
but as I was able to research the methods I learnt and applied these skills, making my
final outcome far better than it would have been without it and demonstrating skills
within the programme.
Using the Canon 705D EOS was also a crucial part of my production to take the
photos with and using Photoshop to edit them to have them appear as industry
standard as possible
In my planning process I took advantage of the social networking platform “messenger”
to coordinate my models, equipment and photo shoot alongside getting vital feedback
from my focus group

Question7
36. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?
Question7
Image progression
From my preliminary task I feel that I have progressed and improved in many areas, particularly my
camera skills, enabling me to take higher quality images. To do this I did a lot of research on my
cameras different settings and modes through YouTube tutorials and as a result I did not have to rely
on automatic settings for things like ISO and focus.
I also used tutorials and research to learn new skills in Photoshop which enabled me to edit the
photos to reflect industry standard and make them more visually appealing
To overcome many of the issues I faced with my preliminary, I put far more planning and
consideration into the final images, for example I took mise en scene into consideration in terms of
the clothing my model was wearing and the face paints. I also considered lighting effects and using a
photography studio for my final images rather than a poorly lit room. Clearly this was a large
improvement on my preliminary task as my final production was of a far higher quality and standard.
37. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?
Question7
Research
To make my final production as realistic as possible I did a lot more intensive research into it’s
production and this helped me to better understand the codes and conventions of real media
products and convey these to my own target audience to entice them to read my magazine. In
doing so I was able to associate relevant theories to my magazine, in particular the uses and
gratifications theory such as the direct mode of address my model uses in the contents and the
reception theory in which images attempt to convey men and women as equals which I did by
having a male model on my cover instead of a female to help level the inequality of
representation.
Overall this research enabled me to create a final production with the needs of my audience
considered and influential in my decisions. I was able to understand these needs and wants due
to the wide range of knowledge I now had about existing media audiences needs and wants.

38. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?
Question7
Masthead From my preliminary task I feel as though my masthead vastly
improved. The masthead in my preliminary was a Photoshop font
placed at the top in the left hand corner, this was not a stylistic
choice, it was simply to fill blank space. I added the school logo at
the beginning and the font does not really go with it. Due to it’s
size it became a focal point of the cover without it being reflective
of my audience and very simple and limited in it’s design and skill
demonstration.
However I feel that in my final production my masthead was far
more reflective of my audience, the font I used was one I found on
the internet and thought as it was unique and stylish it was
reflective of my audience .
The unique style of my masthead made it more interesting and
recognisable, creating brand awareness. I managed to achieve this
memorable style by studying other existing media products
mastheads.
39. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?
Question7
Fonts
Progressing from my preliminary I feel that I can now understand and incorporate
different fonts and styles more suitably for a more professional and visually
appealing look. I achieved this by studying existing media products and the ways
they incorporate fonts and text.
In my preliminary task I used one simple font, and find now that it looks dull and
doesn’t hold an audience’s attention due to it’s monotonous look. My final
production made use of several different fonts that complimented each other and
used bold and italic versions for emphasis. I also used different sized fonts in my
contents to draw the reader’s attention to the tag lines for important articles, eg.
“BEAU HANNY” and “THE FESTIVAL OF COLOUR”
Preliminary
Final Production
40. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?
Question7
Layouts
From my preliminary I feel that I’ve
vastly improved my skills in terms
of designing the layout for my final
production, the contents of my
preliminary task had a very
unfinished look to it as I left a large
space in the bottom left hand
corner. I used all the same fonts
and my text was written and
arranged in boxes that did not line
up with one another and this
created a very confused and all over
the place. I also used only one
image on the contents page and this
would not conform to the needs of
my target audience who have short
attention spans and pictures help
to keep their focus.
I was able to make the layout of my
final production far better, the arms
and text that curved around them
helped create an interesting element
but I did not take this too far and
had my column of photos align
neatly. I used different fonts and
different sixed fonts to keep it
interesting and used three photos
instead of just the one to help keep
the attention span of my readers.
41. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you
have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?

Transferring these skills – Double Page Spread Text
I carried across my knowledge of text codes and
conventions from my research by using pull quotes,
an introduction and drop cap letters. My masthead
was written in bold big fonts like many Billboard and
Rolling Stone spreads. The masthead draws attention
to the reader in keeping with the uses and
gratifications theory. The language I used helps the
reader to connect with the artist as I used short
sentences and exaggerated words familiar to them
and the article included personal content that would
interest a reader or fan. This is an improvement from
my preliminary as I had not considered the ways
language could be reflective of my audience
Layout
After researching the layouts of existing media
products I was able to create a relatively simple
looking spread that wasn’t too chaotic or difficult to
read, helping to conform to the needs of my audience.
I had an image as the focal point of the right hand
side and the interview text on the left, a convention
seen across every magazine I have studied. I also
followed the convention of having my text split into
two columns. Again this was an improvement from
my double page spread as I considered the needs of
my audience
Image
After learning to use my camera efficiently I took this
image of my model in medium close up and edited it with
the Photoshop skills I had learnt after finding some
difficulty in my preliminary. I made it more eye-catching
and attention grabbing to the audience, again in
conformity with the uses and grats theory. The mise en
scene is also attention grabbing due to his casual clothes
the reader can relate to and the mysterious hand
reaching out. The high quality image suits the luxury feel
of my magazine leaving much higher production values
than my preliminary as it is better aimed at my audience

have learnt from the progression of it to your full product?

Conclusion
In conclusion I feel that in the progression from my preliminary to my final production I have
learnt a lot about the conventions of real media products and how to re-create these using
skills I also learnt. The following are the areas I think I have progressed the most in:
Images – I improved in both the taking of images and editing them. Through watching and
reading online tutorials I was able to use my camera more effectively, taking photos using
different types of professional lighting and equipment and manipulating and altering them
in Photoshop. This shows a great improvement from my preliminary task as the images I
took were not to the standard or quality they could have been. They were taken in a dimly
lit room with no equipment and were edited with little knowledge or skill in the programme I
was using (Photoshop)
Understanding codes and conventions of real media products – My research was essential in
finding out the ways an industry standard magazine similar to my own is constructed.
Because I better understood the workings of these magazines my decisions were informed
by my knowledge helping me to create a more realistic final production for my audience
which would satisfy their needs
Understanding and implementing the needs of my target audience – Through
communicating with my focus group who were representative of my target audience and
researching the target audiences of similar magazines I was able to construct a production
with all their needs and concerns taken into account and influential on my decisions. I was
then able to implement these changes with the skills and techniques I had learnt.
