2. PURPOSES
• An opening sequence is very important in establishing the
movie. It would aid the audience in understanding what
the film is about.
• Also, when a film has an opening sequence which is very
eye catching, the audience may be really excited to get into
the film and may enjoy it. The audience may also
remember the opening sequence even if they forget about
the rest of the film.
• However, if the opening sequence is boring and only
contains a few shots and dialogues, the audience may not
want to watch the movie as they would think that the
whole movie would be like that.
3. • The main purpose of an opening sequence is to set up the character,
location and mood of the film. The plot and genre are introduced. The
characters are also introduced and the main character established.
• There is also a hook in the opening sequence and the audience may
be able to relate to the film. Enigma is also included which would
create uncertainty and audience would want to watch as they won't
know what is going on. Moreover, an opening sequence ends at a
cliffhanger and audience wonder what’s going to happen next so they
keep watching the film.
• The credits are also shown in an opening sequence and if some
favorite director or favorite actor is involved in the film the audience
may be interested in watching the film.
• The production house is also shown and audience who are interested
in films by that production house may watch it.
• So, in order for a film to be successful they would need an interesting
and eye pleasing opening sequence.
